Subject: MESA letter, 2017 WATS conference
November 2, 2017
Respectable European and United Nations Dignitaries,
On September 15, 2017, Professor Beth Baron, President of MESA (US-based “Middle East Studies Association”) and Dr. Amy W. Newhall, Executive Director of MESA, wrote a letter addressed to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım of Turkey, copied to you, expressing “deep concern” regarding steps certain circles in Turkey are taking to prevent scholars based in Turkey from participating in the WATS-2017 conference (Workshop on Armenian Turkish Scholarship) in Berlin on September 15-18, 2017 having the theme of “Armenian Genocide.”
Attached is the copy of the October 27, 2017 letter I sent to Prof. Baron and Dr. Newhall, brought to your attention for your information. The letter draws attention to the hypocrisy of the MESA adminstrators to talk as the guardians of the freedom of expression and academic freedom on one hand, and to exclude opponents of the “Armenian genocide” narrative from the MESA-organized conferences on the other hand.
Respectfully,
Ferruh Demirmen, Ph.D. Houston, Texas, USA ferruh@demirmen.com
