I’m reaching out to a few of you directly to ask for help. I’ve been working with a new 501(c)(3) Veteran service organization since November. The team and I originally came together to organize the “Veterans Stand for Standing Rock” action in December to protect the rights and freedoms of the Standing Rock Sioux tribe in their fight against the Dakota Access Pipeline. Since then we have built a non profit organization “Veteran Service Corps” to continue work with the local Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe in a mission of empowerment and collaboration and also to begin the preparations to stand against the #KeystoneXL pipeline when it comes through this region in 2018. Many of the things we learned in December’s Stand have helped us develop the right framework and infrastructure to avoid the human rights violations that we saw in Standing Rock and bring national attention to a community in significant need.
We are a focused on empowering under served communities and peacefully defending the constitutional rights of the people of this country, this is our first operation and right now our primary focus is here on the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe reservation in South Dakota. Its a community that despite being 46% Veteran lives well under the poverty line with an average income on the reservation of less than $700 per year and an average life expectancy of 48 years old (yes that’s right I said 48!). There are several projects we’re taking on (detailed in the attached documents) in partnership with tribal leadership to bring morale, education, economic opportunities and housing to these service oriented people.
I am not the type of person to ask for financial support but we are in a difficult position with funds running out quickly and our online fundraising efforts moving slow. I realize you’re not a millionaire – god know’s I’m not either but I see the good that can be done here with just a small amount of funds and I see how important it is to fight for our rights now as they are all being diminished. I’ve personally donated everything I have in both time and money, so much so that I won’t be able to pay my rent next month but I’ll find a way. So I’m asking for your support, even if its just in sharing what we are doing here to your networks. I promise this won’t become a habit, I have faith that once more people know what the need is here and the impact that we’re having that fundraising will pick up. In the meantime could you take a moment to read through the attached briefs and donate if you are motivated to do so and able?
Thank you and I’m sorry to be reaching out with a need, but its an important one and I had to ask before giving up.
Best, Sedef |
Request for Help – Veteran Service Corps
Can I ask for your support in sharing this to your communities because I need some help.
There are several projects we’re taking on in partnership with tribal leadership to bring morale, education, economic opportunities and housing to these service oriented people. Veteran Service Corps goal is to unite people and fulfill our oath as Veterans to protect and defend the people of this country from all enemies, both foreign and domestic. We do this by focusing our volunteer and online networks on service driven “missions” for underserved communities. leveraging the shared military service of our volunteers we provide our partner communities a unique opportunity to progress on initiatives that have been previously impossible to achieve due to lack of network, resources or manpower. Our volunteers find a sense of purpose, healing and personal growth and both of our communities are empowered with new options and socio economic opportunities. We are reaching out to you about our current mission, OPERATION EAGLE (OP Eagle). Working directly with the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe (CRST) in Eagle Butte, SD, OP Eagle was designed to find impactful, community service projects that support the growing partnership and organic affinity between our communities. Through our partnership we have developed projects focused on community enhancement, cultural/skills learning, wellness and economic development. The leadership team at Veteran Service Corps is working hard in the field, working with our volunteers and planning for the rest of the year. All of the work being done, at every level of the organization is being done by VSC Volunteers. There is no paid staff. Our board and leadership team of volunteers are developing a sustainable and ongoing funding model. That will include donations from individual members, grants from corporate and charitable foundations, as well as, revenue from merchandise and events. But the funding effort takes time and the real need and opportunity for impact is now. In order to maintain the momentum we’ve built within this community and to execute OP Eagle to its full potential we have ongoing operating expenses in Eagle Butte. We need supplies to move forward on projects, feed Volunteers, put gas in vehicles, pay utility bills on the houses we are occupying (use donated by the CRST), stay current with insurance and other regulatory requirements. We need $100,000 now keep our Volunteers working through the spring and summer until the ongoing funding plan takes effect.
Your support will keep OP Eagle alive and moving forward. We will, of course, be happy to discuss recognizing your contribution in a way that is meaningful to you. Veterans Service Corps, is a 501c3 not for profit organization of Veteran volunteers and ally’s registered in the state of California. The founding members, board of directors and executive leadership are the original leadership team of the December Veteran Stand for Standing Rock including: Mission Operations, Security/Intel, Logistics, Communications/PR/Media and Fundraising Teams Best, Sedef Buyukataman,
