Pope Francis should be declared persona non grata in Turkey

    By Ferruh Demirmen, Ph.D.
    June 30, 2016

Pope Francis, visiting Armenia during June 24-26 (2016), once again succumbed to his anti-Turkish, anti-Muslim prejudice and called the 1915 events in Ottoman Anatolia “genocide.” To the delight of his hosts, hours after landing in Yerevan he departed from a prepared speech and used the damnable term despite previous reassurances by the Vatican that he would not do so.

The Pontiff’s Christian emotions had taken over his common sense and decency.

The Pontiff repeated his anti-Turkish invective before leaving Armenia by commemorating, jointly with Kerekin II of the Armenian Apostolic Church, “The extermination of a million and a half Armenian Christians … as the first genocide of the twentieth century.”

Not surprisingly, the Pope’s language drew an angry rebuke from Ankara.

To placate Turkey, the Vatican spokesman Rev. Federico Lombardi absurdly said: “The pope has not used any words against the Turkish people.” How thoughtful!

The allegation by the Pope is baseless and has the hallmarks of solidarity with Christian Armenia. After all, Armenians keep reminding the world that they are the “First Christian Nation.” As the spiritual leader of the Christian world, the Pope surely cannot remain indifferent to that banner!

This is no place to delve into history to explain why the term ‘genocide” for the 1915 events is inappropriate. Suffice it to say that, the diplomatic jibe at Turkey aside, the Pope committed several wrongful acts, all serious, and all breaches of trust.

    Violating international norms

First, the Pope summarily violated international covenants and judicial rulings bearing on the crime of genocide. That includes the 1948 UN Convention on genocide, which states that the crime of genocide can only be established by a tribunal of law, and France’s Constitutional Council’s ruling on January 8, 2016, which underlined this fact. Hence no entity other than a court of law can pass judgment on genocide.

The European Court on Human Rights (ECtHR), in its 2013 and 2015 rulings on the Switzerland-Perinçek case, noted that Armenian genocide is disputed among the scholars, and hence not an established fact. To date, there has been no court verdict on Armenian “genocide.”

Further, the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) bars retroactive application of a law to an event that preceded it. The 1948 UN Convention went into force in 1953. The UN has also refused to call the 1915 events genocide.

So, one must ask: Given these international covenants and precedents, what gave the Pope the right or authority to call the 1915 events genocide? Just because some biased scholars or politically motivated parliaments have done it, the Pope cannot justify his use of the term “genocide.”

The Pope’s “Holy status” and his “Godly mission” do not exempt him from observing the rule of law. The Pope, just like the “earthly beings,” must respect the law.

Further, the Pope cannot claim that he was simply expressing an “opinion.” Opinions cannot be used to attach a heinous crime to a person or group with impunity. The 1948 UN Convention does not recognize “genocide” based on opinion.

The Pope’s recognition of Armenian “genocide” was not his “first.” He did the same thing on St. Peter’s Basilica in April 2015, lumping other Anatolian Christian minorities such as the Assyrians in the “mass killings.” This set the stage for the German parliament Bundestag to likewise include in its June 2, 2016 resolution other Christians under the “genocide” label.

A sure sign of Christian solidarity or Islamophobia.

    Hypocrisy and double standard

The Pope’s commemoration of Armenian “genocide,” intended supposedly as a reminder to prevent such crimes in the future, becomes all the more hypocritical considering that, while recognizing Armenian “genocide,” he chose not to acknowledge the massacre of more than a half million Muslim civilians at the hands of renegade Armenian gangs during the World War I Armenian revolt.

Surely a sign of selective morality.

But there is more. The pontiff, on his visit to Bosnia in June 2015, refused to use the term “genocide” when he denounced the Srebrenica killings. This is despite the fact that two UN courts, the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and the International Court of Justice (ICJ), have established that the Srebrenica killings were genocide.

Before the visit, the Bosnian academics had pleaded with the Pope to recognize the Srebrenica killings as genocide. The Pontiff ignored these pleadings. His Holiness could not bring himself to calling an event genocide if the perpetrators are Christian and the victims Muslim.

Surely a case of double standard.

The Srebrenica genocide is a recent (1995) history, and the location is a stone’s throw from the Holy See.

    Concluding remarks

The Pope’s recognition of Armenian “genocide,” plus his hypocrisy and double standard toward Muslim killings, are a reflection of a deep-seated prejudice against Islam. Such prejudice hopefully does not presage the dawn of a new, post-modern crusade against the Muslim world.

No doubt the Pope was also influenced by years of genocide propaganda run and funded by the Armenian diaspora. This has led to a well-entrenched Western proclivity to accept Armenian claims as truth without forethought and scrutiny. The ad nauseam, prejudice, half-truths, deception, cherry-picking, exaggeration, intimidation, Reductio ad Hitlerum, and labelling (“denialist”) have been the techniques successfully employed in Armenian propaganda.

Whatever the underlying cause, if his Holiness is serious about humanity and inter-faith dialog, as he claims he is, he should demonstrate that his concerns and compassion transcend racial, religious and ethnic boundaries.

Surely, the Pope’s call a year ago for the religious establishments in Europe to accept some of the Muslim refugees fleeing the fighting in Syria and Iraq is commendable. But it is also true that, when it comes to Armenian “genocide,” his Holiness’ prejudice clouds his judgment.

For opinion on the Armenian question, the Pope should defer to historians, not just on the Armenian side, but also on the Turkish side.

If the Pope continues with his baseless accusations on Armenian “genocide,” he should be declared persona non grata in Turkey. His acting as the spokesman for the Armenian causes does not help Turkish-Armenian relations. It is more like a poison.

  • Turkish Denialist Helps Publicize Truth about the Armenian Genocide

Turkish Denialist Helps Publicize Truth about the Armenian Genocide

Ergun Kirlikovali, a resident of Orange County, California, and former president of the Assembly of Turkish American Associations, has carried out a life-long Don Quixotic battle against recognition of the Armenian Genocide. Unfortunately for him, the more he denies the Genocide, the more he helps publicize it.

Here is the latest episode of Kirli’s ‘heroic’ actions which once again backfired on him and his obsessive denialism.

On April 24, as 60,000 protestors gathered in front of the Turkish Consulate in Los Angeles, Kirli showed up with a handful of his denialist compatriots trying to cover up the tarnished image of their homeland! The Turks’ presence at the protest attracted the attention of the local news media, generating more publicity for the 101st anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.

To take credit for his anti-Armenian protest, Kirli had a cohort videotape his interview with KABC-TV, during which he once again denied the Armenian Genocide. Shockingly, in the midst of the interview, the KABC cameraman made derogatory remarks about Armenians, calling them “thug-like idiots.”

In its news coverage of the April 24 protest, KABC used a sound bite from Kirli’s 8-minute rant. However, no one would have known about the cameraman’s prejudicial comments, if it were not for Kirli posting the raw footage of his interview on Facebook, which got the anti-Armenian cameraman in hot water.

In response to complaints from the public, KABC promptly issued a statement apologizing for its freelance cameraman’s remarks and announcing the termination of his services with the TV station. However, KABC insisted that its story was “fair and accurate.” Many viewers disagreed, citing the inclusion of Kirli’s denialist views in the broadcast. In a phone conversation with KABC’s General Manager last week, I discussed the pitfalls of providing airtime to a denialist and the positive steps the TV station could initiate to educate viewers about the Armenian Genocide. Upset by the station’s conciliatory statement, Kirli posted on Facebook his “disappointment” with KABC’s apology and dismissal of the cameraman after complaints from “Armenian pressure groups.”

The Armenian National Committee of America — Western Region (ANCA) and Armenian Youth Federation — Western US (AYF) issued a joint statement contesting KABC’s decision to provide a platform to a notorious genocide denier and asked for a meeting with the TV station’s management. They justifiably contended that KABC would never interview a neo-Nazi while covering a Holocaust commemorative event.

Subsequently, KABC’s management agreed to meet with representatives of ANCA, AYF, and the Armenian Bar Association, and removed from the TV station’s website Kirli’s offensive words along with the questionable news story! After the meeting, Cheryl Kunin Fair, President and General Manager of KABC-TV, issued the following highly principled statement on May 2:

“ABC7 regrets what happened and apologizes for the pain this incident caused the Armenian community, especially on Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day. The actions of the cameraman in question, who no longer works for the station, and the resulting story that aired that day, were not an accurate reflection of ABC7′ s commitment to the Armenian community. While the cameraman’s comments did not air, we regret the inclusion in our story of a short bite from the interview denying the existence of the Genocide on historical grounds, which is counter to the position of a majority of historians today who do call it a Genocide, and see the deaths of 1.5 million Armenians as a premeditated and systematic campaign to exterminate an entire people. Efforts are underway in partnership with the ANCA, AYF, Armenian Bar Association and others to provide opportunities for public dialogue, internal education, and meaningful stories about and for the Armenian community and their efforts for Genocide recognition and education. We are committed to moving forward with these initiatives and we thank the ANCA and its partner organizations for their leadership in this dialogue and willingness to listen.”

KABC-TV should be commended for issuing such a reassuring statement, apologizing for the offense caused to the Armenian community, promising not to use the services of the bigoted cameraman, expressing regret for interviewing a genocide denialist, reaffirming the truth of the Armenian Genocide, and pledging to work with community organizations to educate the public on this critical issue. Without Kirli’s persistent denialist endeavors, none of these constructive steps would have been possible!

    Mr. Bass
Ambassador of United States of America to Turkey
    Your Excellency,
We the undersigned are disturbed to read in our newspapers that a new American Embassy building is to be erected on the grounds of our Atatürk Orman Çiftliği.
The newspapers state that an area of about 40.000 square meters of our Atatürk Orman Çiftliği was allocated to TOKİ, which in return was sold to the USA for their new Embassy project.
We understand that in the 21st Century a world leader like The United States of America needs and deserves an Embassy that will provide space necessary for their requirements.
However, Atatürk, the founder of our Republic donated this land to the Turkish People. It is the heritage of the Turkish People Politicians are here today gone tomorrow, but the feelings of the Turkish People will be irrepairably damaged by the idea that a land given to them by Atatürk has been sold out by the present administration.

We, therefore, ask you and your Esteemed Government to consider using this land for some cultural or public function that recognises The United States’s admiration for Atatürk and request that you construct your new Embassy building in another area which will meet your requirements.
    Yours sincerely

OTTAWA – The Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide:

“Today, we commemorate the centennial anniversary of the Armenian Genocide; an event which saw the destruction of the national and personal freedom of over a million people during and after the First World War.

“By recognizing the atrocities of the Armenian Genocide, we are reminded of the pain and suffering endured by those affected, as we endeavor to achieve peace and reconciliation for the people of Armenia, and a stable and prosperous future for all of its citizens.

“While the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide is a time for solemn remembrance, it also provides us with the opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to never again be indifferent to hatred and genocide, nor remain silent to those who discriminate against others based on characteristics such as race, gender, or sexual orientation.

“On behalf of the Liberal Party of Canada and the entire Liberal Caucus, I stand with Canadians across the country as we honour the memories of the victims of the Armenian Genocide.”
