Business in booming for Turkey’s commercial aviation industry. Led by Turkish Airlines, the industry has already ordered some 5.3 billion dollars worth of new aircraft.

ISTANBUL – Turkey’s steady emergence as a global economic power is pushing its commercial aviation industry to new heights.

The country already has one of the fastest growing airline industries in the world. And over the next decade, Turkish Airlines and other local operators – including Pegasus, Sky and Saga – could add up to 300 new aircraft to their fleets, according to Aldo Besile, Boeing’s assistant director of European sales. The Turkish companies have already placed new orders for 57 new planes that together cost approximately 5.3 billion dollars.

“We predict that this healthy growth will continue,” said Besile. “As Boeing, we are happy to support the success of these Turkish companies’ corporate models with the highest quality products. We believe that the local airline market is right to be upbeat because this sector is really growing quickly in Turkey.”

The airline industry appears to be an upswing worldwide following the 10 billion-dollar hit it took during the global recession of 2009. At the recent International Air Transport Association’s (IATA) meeting in Singapore, airlines downgraded their combined projected growth figures for 2011 from 8.6 billion dollars to 4 billion dollars.

“Some of the external reasons for this decreased number were the costs of fuel, wars and disasters, and volcanic eruptions; all of which affect the airline industry,” said Besile. “However, Turkey continues to look very stable.”

New Turkey-Italy route promises mutual tourist boom

Turkish Airlines will add an extra weekly service from Istanbul to the popular Italian riviera destination of Genoa, which should result in a mutual growth in arrivals for two of Europe’s top tourist economies.

turkish airlines istanbul italy genao nationalturk 0045The Turkish national carrier announced that it would fly four weekly services to Genoa, the Italian riviera city from which the popular Ligurian coast is most easily reached. The additional flights, from the airline’s main base in Istanbul, will commence on June 27th.

The increasing connection to the country often considered the ‘Europe’s gateway to the Middle East and Asia’ is a welcome one for Italy, which has recently renewed its tourism strategy to focus more on growing economies in both this area and Eastern Europe. The northern area of the country, traditionally considered the more ‘wealthy’ and exclusive as a regular haunt of celebrities like George Clooney and the late Elizabeth Taylor, is particularly beginning to open itself up to more mainstream tourism, with increased low-cost flights to areas like Lake Garda and new, more affordable holiday housing developments springing up.

Istanbul a destination for life ?

Turkey, particularly Istanbul, has also come into its own as a destination for both vacations and permanent relocation, with many European retirees taking advantage of the low property prices to secure themselves a great piece of coastal real estate for their retirement years. The national population registry estimates that over 100,000 migrants arrived in the Turkey’s biggest city and economic capital over 2009-10, meaning foreigners now make up 7.7% of Istanbul’s total population.

In its global expansion plans, Turkish Airlines has decided to open its own office in India instead of operating through a general sales agency (GSA). InterGlobe Aviation is the GSA for the airline in India.

“We are working out plan for expansion in India,” said Adnan Aykac, general manager of Turkish Airlines in India. Turkish Airlines is the national carrier of Turkey and operates in 139 international and 42 domestic cities of Europe, Asia, Africa and the US.

Aykac said the airline will take delivery of 22 aircraft by the end of the current calendar year and would not need leased aircraft. The airline has taken four Boeing 777s on lease from Jet Airways and the lease period will expire this year. “We will take delivery of 12 Boeing 777s and 10 Airbus 330s this year and may not need to continue operating with leased aircraft,” said Aykac.

Jet Airways, India’s largest carrier in terms of passenger carriage, said it has informed Turkish Airlines that the lease would not be extended. “Jet Airways will induct two Boeing 777 aircraft into its operations and has entered into an agreement with Thai Airways for the lease of the remaining two. The aircraft will be leased for two years with an option to extend for a year,” said an email reply from the airline.

The lease period of the first aircraft expires on July 14, the second on August 12, the third on September 1 and the fourth on October 30.

Turkish Airlines, which is a Star Alliance member and has code sharing with Air India, hopes to strengthen it further after the national carrier joins the alliance in July. “Once Air India joins the alliance, it will help us extend our operations. We expect to get passengers from Kathmandu without actually flying there,” said Aykac.

He said the airline aims to strengthen its network in Europe to provide unmatchable link across Europe. “Our plans are to expand our network in the US after Europe,” he said.
