    Redford in Istanbul to launch TV channel

    American actor Robert Redford traveled to Istanbul recently to attend the Turkish launch of Sundance Channel, which was founded by him in order to bring independent films and original series to TV audiences.

It’s an honor to visit Turkey, a country known for its vibrant arts and culture, to celebrate Sundance Channel’s debut. We look forward to bringing the compelling stories of filmmakers around the world to audiences here locally on Sundance Channel for many years to come,” Redford said yesterday at a press conference. President of the AMC/Sundance Channel Global Bruce Tuchman and Digiturk Head of Content and Acquisitions Esra Özaral Altop were also in attendance at the press conference.

    Strong demand

    “We continue to experience strong demand for Sundance Channel’s distinctive programming and are confident Turkish audiences will respond enthusiastically to our award-winning, globally renowned entertainment,” said Tuchman.

    Speaking at the press conference, Altop said that the channel was recognized worldwide as one of the most loved and respected channels through its dedication to independent films and original series. “It is an immense honor for us to welcome Mr. Redford, the foremost iconic film-makers of our generation and founder of Sundance Channel, to Turkey,” she said.

    The pay TV carriage deal marks the first time a local version of the Sundance Channel will be available in Turkey.

    LONDON – AMC/Sundance Channel Global has sealed what it is calling a landmark carriage deal to take a local version of its Sudance Channel into Turkey.

    The network is launching on Digiturk in Turkey marking the first time the Sundance Channel will be available in the country.

    AMC/Sundance also said it will push out the channel via Cyfrowy Polsat and Toya in Poland.

    AMC/Sundance Channel Global president Bruce Tuchman said: “Our partnership with these major platforms is a significant achievement in expanding Sundance Channel’s presence and audience throughout the globe. We continue to experience strong demand for Sundance Channel’s distinctive HD film and TV programming.”

    Sundance Channel will launch on Digiturk, Turkey’s largest direct to home platform, as a locally versioned 24/7 offering, accompanied by a video-on-demand (VOD) service.

    In Poland Cyfrowy Polsat, the country’s largest DTH platform, will get a locally versioned 24/7 channel while cable operator Toya takes a locally versioned 24/7 channel and a VOD offering.

    The latest additions to the territory roster for AMC/Sundance follows a slew of pay TV deals across territories including France, the Netherlands, Spain, Belgium, Portugal, Poland, Romania, Hungary, Korea, Thailand and Taiwan.

    Sundance Channel was founded by Robert Redford and aims to showcase independent films.

    Sundance, !f Istanbul team up for Obama-initiated film project

    The Sundance Institute, which manages the Sundance Film Festival, one of the most prestigious independent film festivals in the world, and the !f Istanbul AFM International Independent Film Festival are set to collaborate on a new project.

    Film Forward, a program initiated under an incentive of the United States President Barack Obama to develop worldwide inter-cultural dialogue, has chosen Istanbul as one of its 10 partner cities and !f Istanbul as the collaborating film festival for the project.

    Founded by Robert Redford in 1981, the Sundance Institute has chosen 10 films from various countries for the program. These films will be screened in the 10 chosen cities and discussions with the directors and the Sundance Institute crew will run after the screenings.

    The program is set to begin in New York in December, 2010 and will conclude in Washington, September 2011, with a screening of all the films in the project.

    The Istanbul leg of the program will take place during the 10th !f Istanbul Film Festival, running from Feb. 17 to 27, with the support and collaboration of the U.S. Embassy in Ankara.
