Colombia attempts to hinder steel imports from Turkey

    Kolombiya’dan Türk Çeliğine Karalama

Turkish Steel Exporters’ Association has stated that certain circles in Colombia have started a campaign of defamation against imports from Turkey, claiming that Turkish products are not up to standard, with the aim of hindering steel imports from Turkey.

According to the CIB, as of January 1st 2013, Colombia started to take samples of imported Turkish steel products at customs for analysis. CIB chairman Mr Namik Ekinci said that the sampling implemented in the wake of groundless claims has resulted in imported products being delayed at customs for a long period of time and that the action represents a non tariff barrier aimed at hindering imports.

The CIB stated that in past years some other circles which were uncomfortable with steel imports from Turkey resorted to the same system, while he warned Colombian importers not to base their imports from Turkey on an analysis which does not reflect the truth. As a result of the CIB’s efforts and dialogue between the CIB and the Colombian steel industry association Fedemetal, the analysis report in question regarding Turkish steel imports has turned out to be groundless and the institution responsible for the claims has published a disclaimer.

Mr Ekinci said that Turkish steel exporters previously faced similar obstacles in other steelmaking countries, underlining that Turkish steel products are exported to 186 countries, adding that Turkish steel is preferred in these countries given their high quality at competitive prices and that the high quality of Turkish steel is always proved in the face of such claims.

The CIB chairman underscored that these attempts to disrupt steel imports from Turkey will contradict the essence and purpose of the free trade agreement planned to be signed between Turkey and Colombia. He went on to said that the CIB would like to invite Colombian business people and media members to visit steelmaking facilities in Turkey and to observe production processes for high quality products. Mr Ekinci indicated that the CIB welcomes any collaboration with Colombian business people and is ready to supply the Colombian steel industry with materials as well as know how and experience regarding the industry.

  • Russia and Turkey face 5 year EU tariffs on steel tube fittings

Russia and Turkey face 5 year EU tariffs on steel tube fittings

The European Union imposed five-year tariffs on steel tube fittings from Russia and Turkey to curb competition for EU producers including Italy’s Virgilio Cena & Figli SpA.

The duties as high as 23.8% punish Russian and Turkish exporters of the fittings, which are used to join tubes or pipes mainly in the petrochemical, energy, construction and shipbuilding industries, for selling in the 27 nation EU below cost. That practice is known as dumping.

European manufacturers that also include Erne Fittings GmbH of Austria suffered “material injury” as a result of dumped imports from Russia and Turkey, the EU said in a decision made yesterday in Brussels and due to enter into force after publication in the bloc’s Official Journal on January 29.

The five year duties follow provisional anti dumping levies introduced six months ago and confirm those rates of 23.8% on Russian exporters and as high as 16.7% on Turkish exporters. Sardogan Endustri ve Ticaret faces a 2.9% duty, RSA Tesisat Malzemeleri San ve Ticaret AS a 9.6% levy and Unifit Boru Baglanti Elem. End. Mam. San. ve Tic. AS a 12.1% tax, while all other Turkish exporters are subject to a 16.7% rate.

Russian and Turkish exporters increased their combined share of the EU market for steel tube fittings to 5% in the 12 months through September 2011 from 2% in 2008.

Isdemir aims to meet customer needs with new facilities

At the 5th Turkish Steel Market Conference in Istanbul Isdemir technical support deputy DG Mr Fikret Basbug gave a presentation about Isdemir and its modernization work.

Mr Basbug referred to Isdemir as the largest investment project of Turkish steelmaker Erdemir. In 1975, Isdemir produced 1.1 million tonnes per annum, consisting mostly of long products. Thanks to investments, this output volume increased to 2.2 million tonnes per annum.

Mr Basbug pointed out that in 2002 during the transfer of Isdemir to Erdemir the most important issue was to establish a hot rolling plant with an output capacity of 1.5 million tonnes per annum but this was subsequently revised to a hot strip rolling plant with an annual output capacity of 3.5 million tonnes. By the end of 2011, Isdemir’s liquid steel production is expected to be 5.3 million tonnes. The hot strip rolled plant project, costing USD 3 billion is now 90% complete with 10,000 people working on the construction. Isdemir worked on the project with engineering enterprise Erenco, a subsidiary of Erdemir. Technology from Mitsubishi, Hitachi and Siemens has been used in the project.

The Isdemir official also mentioned completed projects, indicating that the capacity of Isdemir’s port has been increased from 12 million tonnes to 20 million tonnes per annum. The company’s logistics center continues to operate in the Marmara region, while storage facilities have been expanded for raw material stocks. In addition, the company’s coal injection furnace has started operations.

  • Turkey has become net exporter of structural steel

Turkey has become net exporter of structural steel

Mr Selcuk Ozdil VP of the Turkish Structural Steel Association said while speaking at a Turkish Steel Market Conference held in Istanbul that usage of structural steel in Turkey commenced 10 years ago. Before the 1999 earthquake demand for structural steel and production of these products did not exist in the country.

selcuk ozdilHe said that in this context, the association began its work, focusing on publicizing the usage of structural steel and the resulting advantages. He added that the association’s efforts had succeeded, resulting in significant growth in the consumption and production of the products in question. He also pointed out that a complete range of sections are currently being produced in Turkey.

Mr Ozdil went on to state that Turkey is now a net exporter of structural steel and thanks to the development of this sector, structural steel is now a major export product for Turkey, just like rebar. According to the figures presented by Mr Ozdil, Turkey’s structural section production capacity has reached 2.15 million tonnes while the country’s domestic consumption stands at 575,000 tonnes and Turkey’s apparent consumption is estimated to reach 1 million tonnes.

Mr Selcuk Ozdil pointed out that the potential of the structural steel industry is improving, as sustainable construction activity and investments for renewable energy increase, as production of stronger and lighter products is realized with innovations in design and as more economic production is achieved with the increase in capacities.
