Turkey official condemns French paper’s bio of Prophet Muhammad

ANKARA (AFP) – A senior Turkish government official lashed out on Monday at plans by a French satirical newspaper to release a comic book biography of the Prophet Mohammed, calling it a “provocation” and advising Muslims to ignore it.

The reaction from Mr Ibrahim Kalin, a close aide to Turkey’s Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, came a day after satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo announced plans to release a comic biography of Islam’s founder on Wednesday that the paper said would be researched and educational.

“Charlie Hebdo’s editor says the cartoons won’t be offensive to Muslims. Turning the prophet of Islam into a cartoon character is itself wrong,” Mr Kalin said in a message on Twitter.

“No matter what Charlie Hebdo people say, this is a provocation. My advise to Muslims: ignore it. Don’t give them what they want.”

WAM Istanbul,Oct 06th, 2012 (WAM) – UAE Minister of Culture Abdul Rahman Al Owais emphasised on Friday, the importance of interfaith dialogue so that the world can understand how Muslims see Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him) and how lovingly they speak about him.

Speaking to Emirates News Agency (WAM) shortly after opening UAE’s Burda Award exhibition at the Dolma Pasha Museum in Istanbul, the minister of culture, youth and community development also said that the gallery of collections owned by the Award reflects an ideology and a civilised cultural style for interfaith dialogue.

Owais opened the exhibition as part of the Emirati Cultural Festival that started in Turkey on Thursday. Organised by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Community development in association with the UAE embassy, the festival will run until 15th October.

The minister hailed the deep-rooted cultural relations between UAE and Turkey and said that Istanbul was chosen for the Burda exhibition because of its special place in the ancient Islamic history.

The gallery of Burda collections based in the UAE capital was airlifted to Turkey as part of the exhibition.

Burda Award, one of the most celebrated prize in the Muslim world in love and remembrance of Prophet Mohammed, was first launched nine years ago with support from UAE Foreign Minister HH Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed, who was Minister of Culture at that time; recalled Owais.

The Award is named after Qassedat-el Burda (Poem of the Mantle)- an ode of praise for Prophet Mohammed composed by the Sufi poet Iman al-Busiri.

The Ministry endeavors to make Al Burda Award a leading and distinctive contest on the Islamic world level to celebrate the memory of the Prophet’s Birthday each year, and to honour the winners in diverse contests.

The awards are given in three main categories, including poetry in classical Arabic language, calligraphy and Islamic illumination art. Arabs, non-Arabs, Muslims and non-Muslims participate in the contest every year.

Hundreds of protesters in Istanbul burnt US and Israeli flags Sunday in a heated reaction against an American film and French cartoons that have sparked dearly riots across the Middle East and North Africa.

Around 500 people gathered around the Turkish city’s iconic Taksim Square, chanting “Allah-u Akbar” as they burnt Western flags in a display of fury for the inflammatory depictions of the Prophet Mohammed.

The crowd unfurled banners reading “Death to America” and “Death to France” as they shouted anti-Western slogans, urging the Muslim world to react against the anti-Islamic depictions in the West.

Riot police were stationed around the square and kept the area, populated with foreign missions, under tight security until the group, which dubbed themselves “Lovers of the Prophet”, left peacefully.

Police sealed off access to the French mission. France’s diplomatic posts have been the target of demonstrations across the Islamic region since the publication by French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo of cartoons portraying a naked Prophet Mohammed.

Last Sunday, a small group of 50 protesters gathered in front of the US embassy in the Turkish capital Ankara in a non-violent demonstration against the amateurish American-made film “Innocence of Muslims”, which ridicules Mohammed.

In cities across the Muslim world protesters have vented their fury at France and the United States for what they branded an attack against their religion by targeting their embassies, schools and companies.

Last week, four US officials, including the ambassador to Libya, were killed in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi

Turks chant anti-US slogans and hold placards reading, “America be damned, no to Islamophobia,” during a demonstration against an anti-Islam film made in the US, at Beyazit Square in Istanbul on September 14, 2012.

    Sat Sep 15, 2012 3:40AM GMT

Hundreds of Turks have poured into the streets in the city of Istanbul to condemn a blasphemous anti-Islam film recently made in the United States, Press TV reports.

The protesters marched through the streets in Istanbul after Friday prayers, burned US and Israeli flags and chanted anti-US and anti-Israel slogans.

The demonstrators were also carrying banners and placards reading, “Israel must be destroyed,” and “America be damned, no to Islamophobia.”

Demonstrations over the low-budget anti-Islam film have been held across the Muslim world, with protesters storming US embassies and torching US flags.

Demonstrators in Iran, Sudan, Egypt, Yemen, Tunisia, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Malaysia, Kashmir, Pakistan, Iraq, Gaza, Morocco, Syria, Kuwait, Nigeria, Kenya, and some other Muslim countries poured into the streets after Friday prayers to defend their faith and condemn the movie that denigrated Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

Condemning the movie, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Friday, “This is a strong provocation against our way of life.”

“Insulting the Prophet (PBUH) cannot be justified as freedom of expression. Religion and the Prophet (PBUH) are sacred values and are untouchable,” Erdogan said in a speech at a conference in the Ukrainian Black Sea resort of Yalta.

Syrian opposition group decries insult to Prophet Mohammad

    By IANS,

Istanbul: A major Syrian opposition group has expressed its distress over the insults caused by a US movie towards Prophet Mohammad but also stated that it is shocked over some Muslims’ reaction in the form of murder, arson and vandalism.

“We condemn the repeated insults to the noble prophet … and are outraged to see the insults tied to the anniversary of the September 11 attacks, which suggests there is a connection between the event and the tolerant message of Islam,” Xinhua quoted The Syrian National Council as saying in a statement.

“As we condemn the insults and consider them an assault on the feelings and beliefs of nearly one fourth of the population of the globe, we stress the right of everyone who has been offended to express peacefully their rejection and condemnation,” the Istanbul-based Syrian opposition group added.

The group also denounced the killing of the US ambassador and three other US diplomatic staffers in Libya.

On Tuesday night, protesters stormed the US consulate in Libyan city of Benghazi, and set fire to the building to protest against the video allegedly ridiculing Prophet Mohammad.

The film has also ignited protests in Yemen, Iran and Egypt.
