Gulf Photo Plus to hold photo tour of Istanbul

PhotoGulf Photo Plus (GPP), a leading photography event organiser, will offer an opportunity to produce stunning travel portraits and photographs of the natural and urban landscape of Istanbul in an upcoming photo tour.

The new five-day Gulf Photo Plus “Faces & Places” photo tour of Istanbul will be hosted from November 8 to 12 by visiting international photography gurus Bobbi Lane and David Nightingale.

“We received tremendous feedback on the first photo tour to Muscat. The interest in other destinations in the region was overwhelming, so we decided to push ahead and take Faces and Places to Istanbul,” said Mohamed Somji, director, Gulf Photo Plus.

“The photo tours offer a wonderful opportunity for keen photographers to combine a holiday with a learning experience designed to refine their existing skills with expert guidance, develop new techniques based on critiques and feedback from Bobbi and David.”

The photo tour is a fully planned and scheduled travel photography trip including portraits, street scenes, landscape and night photography with instruction from world-class instructors to improve shooting, composition and observation techniques.

The instructors Bobbi Lane and David Nightingale are regulars in Dubai, having been involved with Gulf Photo Plus for several years.

Lane is a commercial photographer specializing in creative portraits in studio and on location. She is a dedicated photo-educator and brings more than 30 years of technical experience and innovative artistic interpretation to her fun-filled workshops.

Nightingale is a published author and creative director of Chromasia, a fine arts and commercial photography company, who works with the intelligent application of photo enhancing techniques.

“We want the participants to be able to tell a story through their photography and learn tips and tricks to get that postcard-perfect ‘best’ shot and that’s where the instructors come in. They’ll encourage individuals to get out of their comfort zone and try something new, to look at composition in a different way, and explore creativity,” said Mohamed.

Each participant in the Gulf Photo Plus Faces & Places Istanbul photo tour is guaranteed to come away with a varied portfolio of shots, comprising street photography, incredible landscapes and expressive portraits, a statement said.

Students will be encouraged to complete their learning experience with the valuable exercise of producing a photo essay of their trip to Istanbul, which will later be exhibited by Gulf Photo Plus. – TradeArabia News Service

Photography lovers might want to make a trip to Istanbul this summer to be the first in the world to see the last roll of Kodachrome photos on exhibit at the Istanbul Modern museum. As we reported in December, the film was discontinued in 2009 by Kodak due to the rise of digital photography, and the very last roll of film was processed in Kansas at the end of 2010. The last 36-exposure roll was given to National Geographic photographer Steve McCurry in July 2010, who used it to photograph subjects including Robert de Niro, Bollywood stars, Turkish photojournalist Ara Güler and the Rabari tribe of India. McCurry is best known for his iconic portrait “Afghan Girl” which appeared on the cover of National Geographic in 1985, shot on Kodachrome.

The Last Kodachrome Film will run August 2 to September 4 at the Istanbul Modern, located on Turkey’s Bosphorus Strait. The museum also features a collection of modern and contemporary Turkish artists, and will show another photography exhibition from Turkish artist Lale Tara in August along with the work of Steve McCurry.

‘A State of Affairs’ to open this week in Istanbul

An exhibition of 91 photographs taken by Portuguese photographers over a one-week period in 2009 will open Thursday at the Cezayir Restaurant Gallery just behind Galatasaray High School.

The exhibition opens on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. and exhibits 91 photos including photos from Istanbul.
The exhibition opens on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. and exhibits 91 photos including photos from Istanbul.

Entitled “A State of Affairs,” the exhibition is premised on the idea that the world’s news is becoming more and more restricted to what the big news-gathering agencies of the world decide is news even though there are many stories that deserve telling. In 2009, 13 photographers from KameraPhoto set off separately from Lisbon, Portugal, to 13 cities around the globe that were the most frequently mentioned. They each spent a week working with a local newspaper to photograph current events.

The curator, Pauliana Valente Piementel, was one of the 13 photographers. She came to Istanbul to work out of the Hurriyet Daily News & Economic Review. While writing for the paper she spent time photographing the city. The result of the photographers’ work is “A State of Affairs.” The exhibition has already visited New York, London and Brazil.

The exhibition is sponsored by the 2010 European Capital of Culture Agency, Pera Fest and the Daily News. Located in the Cezayir Restaurant Gallery, it is in a convenient place in Beyoğlu at the head of French Sk.

The opening will be at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday and the exhibition will be at the Cezayir Restaurant Gallery for approximately one month.

Address: Cezayir Restaurant Gallery, Hayriye Cad. No. 12, Galatasaray, Beyoğlu
