Israeli Firms in Middle of NSA Spy Scandal

pacTwo Israeli companies, including one exposed by EIR in 2001-02 as under investigation in the U.S. for being part of a massive Israeli espionage network (see EIR, Feb. 1, 2002), have been identified as playing a central role in handling the NSA’s acquisition of call information from major telecommunications companies.

    * VERINT Systems, formerly known as Comverse Systems, a U.S.-based subsidiary of the Israeli Comverse Technologies, was reported by author and NSA expert James Bamford to have been designated by the NSA to process all the call information (metadata) obtained from Verizon. By the time it got the NSA contract, Comverse was already well-known as a leading firm in wiretapping, or what it called the “lawful interception market” for law-enforcement agencies. In 2002, about the time NSA launched its Stellar Wind operation, tapping into the major telecoms, former NSA Director Lt. Gen. Kenneth Minihan joined the Board of Directors of Comverse-Verint.

    * NARUS, another Israeli company, similarly processes all the information obtained from AT&T for the NSA. Narus was founded in Israel in 1997, and in 2010 was acquired by Boeing. Narus’s NarusInsight supercomputer system, which was installed in AT&T’s San Francisco Internet facility and identified by AT&T whistleblower Mark Klein, gave rise to a famous 2006 class action lawsuit filed by the Electronic Frontier Foundation against AT&T, Hepting v. AT&T.

Additionally, AMDOCS, another Israeli telecommunications firm profiled by EIR in 2001-02, specializes in analyzing (i.e. data-mining) customer billing records for major U.S. telecoms; this data is similar to the “metadata” collected by the NSA on all phone calls in the U.S. Some investigators believe Amdocs is also involved in the NSA Stellar Wind program; indeed, it would be surprising if they were not.

Ha’aretz reported on June 8 that both Verint and Narus have ties to both the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad, and the Israel Defense Forces intelligence-gathering unit 8200. Ha’aretz also raises the question of whether Mossad is a party to the intelligence-sharing arrangement between the U.S.’s NSA and Britain’s GCHQ, Britain’s Cheltenham-based signals-intelligence agency.

Turkish intelligence officials provided important explanations on a variety of issues including the presence of foreign intelligence units

    mit-fidan

The National Intelligence Organization (MIT) gave striking answers to the questions of parliamentarian members of the Parliament’s Wiretapping Commission. The MIT responses are summarized as follows:

    VULNERABLE TO HACKING

If the necessary measures are not taken in today’s world, all kinds of hardware and software means of communication are be monitored by means of technology. In addition transactions conducted over computer networks can be accessed and hacked from remote locations or infiltrated from within through cooperative methods. While such infiltration can occur through vulnerabilities at the institutional level, it can also result from personal mistakes and negligence.

SEND TO THOSE WHO MUST BE INFORMED

Formerly named the GES Command, the newly named SIB Electronic Intelligence and Communication executed the task of submitting the obtained information the relevant MIT and Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) units according to the “those who need to know principle.”

    OUR SATELLITES CAN BE MONITORED

It is possible through technical mean for another country to monitor the communications transmitted through the country’s satellite and so on., and the communications that go or come from abroad independent of the transmission medium.

While it is important from a strategic perspective that systems using satellite communication are located on national and ground stations in Turkey, due to communications being conducted via air, there is always a risk of being tapped by countries that have the necessary technology.

    WE DO NOT USE TROJAN

We do not use the Trojan email virus software in our activities. Generally we use open source software in the development of software.

    CIA, MOSSAD HAVE TURKISH OFFICES

(Can foreign intelligence services open offices in Turkey?) When necessary MIT cooperates with the intelligence services of foreign countries. In this sense, just as our organization has offices in other countries, the offices of other countries can be found in ours.

    BE CAREFUL WITH PROMOTIONAL DEVICES

It should be taken into consideration that all kinds of electronic devices can be used by hostile elements for hidden listening and monitoring. On a personal basis, the necessary measures should especially be taken with promotional devices.

    THREATS TO NATIONAL PROJECT PERSONNEL

(How do you assess plot initiatives toward the MILGEM, Milli Geni, and HAVELSAN projects?) We have started implementing the Counter Intelligence concept in order to detect and prevent potential threats to the national projects developed in strategic sectors, and the critical personnel working on said projects.

Turkey Thinks This Bird Is an Israeli Spy Because Its Nostril Is Big Enough to Hold Microchips

    original

Turkish authorities announced Tuesday that they have recovered the body of a daring Israeli spy—replete with feathers. And a belly full of bees.

According to reports from Israeli news site YNet, a farmer discovered the dead bird, a Merops Apiaster aka the European Bee-Eater, in a field outside of Gaziantep and turned it over to authorities after he noticed an Israeli serial band on the bird’s leg.

Never mind that band turned out to be a common means of ornithological tracking—the Society for Protection of Nature in Israel has even confirmed the bands serial number as being legitimate. But Turkey has a an even more damning piece of evidence—the size of the Bee-eater’s nostrils! Dun dun dunnnnnnnn.

Turns out, and don’t ask how they verified this, that the European Bee-Eater’s spacious nasal cavity is ample enough to accommodate a perceived suite of microelectronics—spy cameras, tiny mics, tracking bugs, and whatnot—turning these otherwise benign fowl into flying espionage centers. At least that’s what Ankara’s security services, who are now in possession of the 61 gram “spy,” believe. Or, you know, it could just be one of a large population of European Bee-eaters that inhabits the Northern tip of Israel and migrate across Turkey in their annual trek to, you guessed it, Southern Europe.
