TripAdvisor named London as the world’s best destination

London has been named the world’s best destination by travel review site TripAdvisor, as it continues preparations to host the 2012 Olympic Games.

The city fended off competition from runners up New York and Rome to be named top in the annual Travellers’ Choice Destinations Awards, which rank global cities on the basis of votes from millions of travelers which use the site.

It was one of five European destinations to make the top ten list, which also featured San Francisco, Marrakech in Morocco, Istanbul in Turkey and Siem Reap in Cambodia.

For many, the award for London will not be entirely unexpected — the city is currently basking in the spotlight as it prepares to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, followed by the London 2012 Olympic Games.

It has already been named the best city in the world to visit this year by travel guide publisher Lonely Planet, in an influential global ranking published late 2011.

This week, the city’s world-famous Oxford Street shopping destination kicked off a campaign which will see the entire West End covered in 500 British flags ahead of the summer, each measuring 3.5 meters in height and placed in popular tourist hotspots.

Last month, officials predicted that tourist figures would reach 12.7 million this year (up five percent on 2011), an optimistic projection which appears to contradict suggestions some visitors could be put off by the publicity.

BAGIS SAYS IN LONDON: “EUROPE MUST BE A COSMOPOLITAN, MULTICULTURAL, MULTILINGUAL AND MULTI-FAITH UNION.”

E BagisAs a part of his visits in London, the capital city of England, the Minister for EU Affairs and Chief Negotiator Egemen Bagis made a speech titled “Creating a Common Future Together: Towards a Visionary Europe” in London School of Economics (LSE), one of the leading universities of the United Kingdom.

Bagis said: “Today, we must discuss the future of Europe. Europe must be a cosmopolitan, multicultural, multilingual and multi-faith union. Although it has been going through hard times both economically and politically, the EU is the biggest peace project in the history of humanity and that’s why, Turkey intends to be a member of this Union”.

In his speech, stressing that the EU had to keep up with the developments in the changing world, Bagis also mentioned Turkey’s economic growth. Stating that a great number of Muslims lived in Europe and the perception as “Europe is a club of Christians” was not valid anymore, he said: “The fact that Turkey is a Muslim country is an advantage for Europe”.

Pointing out that Turkey would play a key role for Europe to become a global actor, Bagis said: “Many countries consider Turkey as a source of inspiration”. Stating that the new motto of Turkey throughout its accession process is “Hold tight Europe, Turkey is coming to save you”, he added: “The membership of Turkey will not make the EU pie smaller, but bigger”. Mentioning that Europe needed new markets and Turkey would be a solution within this respect, Bagis said: “The cosmopolitan approach of Turkey towards the global problems will help to make Europe a cosmopolitan union and Europe will turn into a better place with the accession of Turkey”.

  • Kate Middleton Hits ‘War Horse’ Premiere In Black Lace Gown and Her Top dresses are still by Turkish Designer

Kate Middleton Hits ‘War Horse’ Premiere In Black Lace Gown and Her Top dresses are still by Turkish Designer

KateKate Middleton wore many dresses in 2011, but the most famous was her long-sleeved lace wedding gown viewed by millions worldwide.

The second most-famous might have been the navy lace sheath by Erdem, worn at the start of Catherine and William’s royal tour through Canada and California.

It seems that those two dresses scored such high marks that Kate’s taken the lacy style for a third go-round. On the eve of her 30th birthday, she and Prince William walked the red carpet at today’s “War Horse” premiere in London, with the duchess wearing a black gown designed by a Pippa Middleton favorite, Alice Temperley.

Similar to her wedding gown and Erdem dress, the Temperley frock had sheer sleeves and a lined bodice, as well as 3/4 length sleeves and a sexy v-neck. With flattering seams running horizontally and vertically across the dress, Kate’s gown highlighted her slender figure — and distinct lack of baby bump, for those keeping track.

Also in the spirit of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” the duchess wore her enviable tresses (recently named the most coveted celebrity hair style) long and loose. On the accessories front, she sported diamond drop earrings, a diamond bracelet and a simple black clutch.

There was also a fancy umbrella involved, carried by doting husband Prince William (who, for the record, wore his typical large-lapel tuxedo).

The Temperley dress is a far sexier style than Catherine’s worn in the past — if her lavender Alexander McQueen dress from the royal tour said “princess,” this dress screams “on-screen siren.”

    And we’re definitely liking it.

Police include Occupy movement on ‘terror’ list

City of London Police have sparked controversy by producing a brief in which the Occupy London movement is listed under domestic terrorism/extremism threats to City businesses.

The document was given to protesters at their “Bank of Ideas” base on Sun Street – a former site of financial corporation UBS. City police have stepped up an effort to quell the movement since they occupied the building on 18 November, with the document stating: “It is likely that activists aspire to identify other locations to occupy, especially those they identify with capitalism.

“Intelligence suggests that urban explorers are holding a discussion at the Sun Street squat. This may lead to an increase in urban exploration activity at abandoned or high profile sites in the capital.” The Occupy movement is listed alongside threats posed by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Columbia (FARC), Al Qaeda and Belarusian terrorists.

“Just the words themselves are enough to deceive the public opinion and this is what we see at the moment,” Occupy spokesman Spyro Van Leemnen told Yahoo! News. “We are clearly nothing to do with extremists or terrorists, we are a peaceful group and we do use direct action to raise our point but definitely not terrorism.

“The building has been abandoned for a good few years now and we think it is crazy for a bank to have it empty and not used when we know at the same time there are so many family homes that have been repossessed. Occupying that building and giving it back to the community is definitely not a terrorist act,” he added.

Commenting on the document, City of London Police said: “[We] work with the community to deter and detect terrorist activity and crime in the City in a way that has been identified nationally as good practice.

“We’ve seen crime linked to protests in recent weeks, notably around groups entering office buildings, and with that in mind we continue to brief key trusted partners on activity linked to protests.”
