Unrest in other Arabic-speaking countries and changes to Turkish legislation on owning property, helped to lead to a 71 per cent increase in Arab visitors to the country in the first six months of the year compared with a year earlier.

That, in turn, propelled spending to rise 35 per cent from last year at the Istanbul festival, which ran for three weeks in June. The use of foreign credit cards at the festival rose 64 per cent.

“I think hospitality, the same culture, the same religion, delicious foods, nice weather all attracts Arab tourists to Turkey and of course Turkish TV series are one of the main factors of this trend,” said Sedat Gonulluoglu, the cultural and information attaché for Turkey in the UAE.

In May, Kivanc Tatlitug and Songul Oden, actors from the Turkish TV series Noor, launched the Istanbul festival in Dubai in a bid to attract Arab nationals from around the Gulf to the Turkish capital, which has more than 100 malls and smaller shopping centres.

Having previously been unable to buy property in Turkey, Gulf investors can now snap up holiday homes after a law preventing from doing so was abolished this year. According to official statistics from the culture and tourism ministry, 140,000 Arab tourists visited Turkey from the Gulf region in June.

Gulf tourists have been put off visiting other countries such as Egypt, Libya, Syria and Lebanon as unrest or political change and upheaval have caused uncertainty.

The UAE, Saudi Arabia and Qatar have all warned their citizens to avoid travel to Lebanon in recent weeks.

In June, the number of tourists to Turkey from the UAE jumped 54 per cent from a year earlier, while from Bahrain they rose 90 per cent, from Kuwait 64 per cent and from Qatar a 92 per cent.

Like Dubai, Istanbul looks to have benefited from unrest in other parts of the Middle East.

Many hoteliers in Dubai have reported occupancy levels of more than 90 per cent during Eid Al Fitr and record numbers of tourists have visited the UAE this year.

“The cultural and religious closeness between Middle East and Turkey is apparent, plus Turkey’s unique geographical positioning makes it very desirable destination indeed,” said Mr Gonulluoglu.

In total, Istanbul hosted nearly 1 million foreign visitors during the shopping festival, up 20 per cent on June last year.

Like the Dubai Shopping Festival, stores in Istanbul offered discounts, some as much as 50 per cent, on purchases. This year, the city was packed with street parties, live entertainment and concerts.

Shoppers spent 8 billion Turkish lira (Dh16.14bn) in 40 days last year at the festival and the organisers hope to have achieved sales of 7bn lira this year in just 21 days. The 2012 festival ran from June 9 to 29.

Istanbul is gearing up for its second shopping festival next month, with special packages and programmes targeting people from Qatar and other GCC countries.

With Istanbul fast becoming a favourite destination of both Qatari citizens and residents, Turkish Airlines expects a big increase in passenger traffic from Doha during the festival.

The second Istanbul Shopping Fest (ISF) will be held from June 9 to 29.

Turkish Airline’s country manager in Doha, Mehmet Kürsad Caymaz, said yesterday that there had been a steady increase in the number of holiday travellers from Qatar to Turkey in the last few years.

“The outlook is very bright,” he said. “Turkey is fast becoming one of the favourite holiday destinations of Qataris.”

Caymaz pointed to the close relations between Qatar and Turkey, saying that this had helped strengthen interaction between the people of the two countries.

Turkish Airlines operates daily flights between Doha and Istanbul. “If the current trend of rise in passengers continues, we would think of increasing the Doha-Istanbul frequencies to 10 a week,” Caymaz said.

“Special prices starting from QR1,540 plus tax are being offered to Doha passengers for round trip during the shopping festival.”

Istanbul Shopping Fest promises to offer savings of 50% or more at thousands of outlets in the city’s most famous markets, including Taksim, Nisantasi, Sisli, Bakirköy, Fatih, Bahariye, Bagdat and the Spice Bazaar.

“This festival of shopping, culture and entertainment will please its visitors with up to 50% discounts on all brands and products from technology to fashion wear,” a senior ISF official said during a briefing to a group of GCC journalists visiting Istanbul.

“During ISF, avenues and streets will be decorated with special designs and lightings to make the event a colourful experience,” said Fusun Sonmez, the festival general manager.

“The 21-day festival will feature concerts by top singers, street parties and many other entertainment programmes,” said Sonmez.

Lebanese singer Nancy Ajram will be the star attraction of performances being staged in Taksim, a commercial and cultural hub in Istanbul, during the shopping festival.

“During the festival there’ll be lots of events at various points of Istanbul, in shopping malls and stores,” said Sonmez. “Istanbul will become a major entertainment centre for 21 days.”

The first Istanbul Shopping Fest was held between March 18 and April 26 in 2011. The event was moved to June this year so that visitors could enjoy better weather.

During ISF, avenues and streets will be decorated with special designs and lightings to make the event a colourful experience

The festival, being held under the auspices of the Turkish ministry of culture and tourism, the Istanbul governor’s office and many other agencies, will include shopping until 11pm, with special discounts being offered after 10pm.

Its other attractions include free gifts, raffles and prizes including a new car every day during the festival.

Turkish Airlines is considering increasing the baggage allowance during ISF.

Istanbul is known for its handmade rugs, clothing, antiques, spices, sweets, footwear and accessories.

Foreign guests may get back part of the tax they pay for goods from stands located in shopping malls and various points of the city, officials said.

Hakan Kodal, the festival co-chair, said the turnover touched 8bn Turkish liras (around QR16.50bn) during the 2011 ISF that ran for 40 days. “The 21-day target for 2012 is 7bn Turkish liras (around QR14.50bn).”

In the 2011 ISF period, the spending turnover realised through foreign cards in 40 days touched 252mn Turkish liras.

“Our target for 2012 is to reach this figure just in 21 days,” said Kodal.

The festival which hosted 5mn visitors from Turkey and abroad last year is expected to cross that figure during its 21 days next month.

Turkey attracted 31.46mn tourists in 2011, an increase of almost 10% compared to the previous year. Tourist receipts amounted to more than $23bn. Earnings from tourism are expected to reach some $30bn this year.

    Songs and shows

The 21-day İstanbul Shopping Fest (İSF) starts on June 8 with an opening “party” in Taksim Gezi Park Concert Area. DJ Funky C will launch the party which will then liven up with the performance of Group Model and Hadise’s songs. The French group of Zalinde will present a percussion show. The night will continue with a performance by the music group Model. Pop singer Hadise will also present a concert on the opening night. Among the other groups performing during the festival period are Tiny People, The Toy Brigade, Boblins and Curious Noses. Shopping boulevards like Taksim, Nisantasi, Sisli, Bakirkoy, Fatih, Bahariye and Bagdat Avenue will be the main centres of activities

Nancy Ajram nancy ajram 7958154 419 640Manama: Turkish stars will fly to Dubai to help promote the Istanbul Shopping Festival to be held in the cosmopolitan city from June 9 to 29.

Kivanç Tatlitug whose fame as romantic Mohannad in a Turkish drama captured the hearts of women across the Arab world and created a wave of regional interest in his homeland will be in Dubai on May 8 and will take part in a press conference, Turkish sources told Gulf News.

Tatlitug hopes that the romantic gestures in soap operas that gave a great boost to tourism in Istanbul and beyond among Arabs will have the same success in attracting more people to the festival in the city that spans two continents.

Turkish officials said that the 21-day festival is a step forward to maintain Istanbul one of the top destinations in the world.

“Istanbul is a destination with different attractive faces that encompass business, tourism and entertainment,” Hakan Kodal, the festival co-chair, said. “We want our city to be a come-back destination where people can have great opportunities and enjoy its features, concerts and shopping.”

The festival was pushed back from March to June to ensure better weather conditions, he said.

“In 2011, we had a successful festival, and we will build on our success stories and experience to have a better and more enjoyable festival this year. We decided to have it in June because the weather conditions are more clement and people can enjoy the multitude of shows and open air concerts we will have.”

Lebanese superstar Nancy Ajram is scheduled to perform in Taksim, the main commercial and cultural area in modern Istanbul.

Kodal said that the turnover in 2011 was TL8 billion in 40 days.

“Our expectations are TL7 billion in 21 days in 2012,” he said.

According to Fusun Sonmez, the festival general manager, Istanbul is expecting 850,000 visitors in June.

We had 773,092 visitors in June 2011, and we expect more to come and enjoy the city and the festival this year,” she said.

Official figures indicate that around seven million people annually visit the metropolitan, one of the largest in Europe, inhabited by 12.5 million residents.

Shopping malls and shops will remain open late into the evening and will give huge discounts. Turkish Air has also pledged special fares.

“There are also deals with hotels for packages and we are confident that the festival will be highly successful,” she said.

The private sector and the civil society organisations are fully behind the shopping extravaganza and tourism drive, she said.
