Dozens of trucks carrying goods from Iraq, Jordan and Turkey have been travelling on Israel’s roads on a daily basis recently, following secret talks between Israeli and Turkish officials and senior officials from neighboring Arab countries.

Yedioth Ahronoth has learned that following the intensification of battles in Syria and the near collapse of the country’s regime, and after merchandise transported by convoys from Turkey to Iraq and Jordan, and vice versa, was robbed – the Jordan River Crossing (near Beit She’an) and the Haifa and Ashdod Ports have become an alternative for the transport of goods.

Every day, trucks arrive from Jordan and Iraq at the Jordan River Crossing, where the goods they are carrying are loaded onto Israeli trucks, which usually take them to the Haifa Port. From the port they are transported by sea to Turkey and other countries, where trucks from Iraq and Jordan used to travel via Syria.

    First-of-its-kind cooperation

A similar way is made by goods imported from Turkey and neighboring countries to Jordan and Iraq, which arrive at the port on ships. The vessels unload their cargo there, and the merchandise is taken by trucks to the Jordan River Crossing on its way to Jordan and Iraq.

According to estimates, the goods transported through Israel are worth tens of millions of dollars a month.

“Israel’s roads have turned into a transport pipe for exports and imports of goods and commodities from and to Jordan and Iraq,” confirmed a source at the Tax Authority, which is in charge of transporting the goods and inspecting them on the land border.

“These goods and products are not usually flown, but transferred in containers through trucks by land – and now by sea as well,” the source added.

Yedioth Ahronoth has learned that the transport operation is part of a first-its-kind cooperation between the customs authorities and transportation officials in Jordan Iraq and Turkey, and Tax Authority and other government officials in Israel.

The goods and deliveries undergo a strict security check in order to prevent the option of taking advantage of the Israeli gesture, which does not involve a very high profit for Israel, in order to carry out terror attacks or transfer weapons.

  • Exports to Turkey rise to equal exports to Germany

Exports to Turkey rise to equal exports to Germany

Meitav: Exports to Turkey rose 42% to $1.85 billion in 2011, while exports to Germany totaled $1.94 billion.

Israeli exports to Turkey in 2011 equaled exports to Germany, according to an analysis by Meitav Investment House Ltd. of Central Bureau of Statistics data, which show that exports to Turkey totaled $1.85 billion in 2011, 42% more than in 2010.

“The deterioration in diplomatic relations with Turkey has not affected exports,” says Meitav. “In the past year, exports to Turkey rose so much that they equal exports to Germany.” Israeli exports to Germany totaled $1.94 billion in 2011.

Israeli exports to Turkey totaled $132.1 million in December 2011, 51% more than in the corresponding month.

Israeli imports Turkey rose 20.6% from 2010 to $2.1 billion in 2011, resulting in a trade deficit of $321 million.

Meitav also noted a change in the mix of exports to the EU, which is Israel’s largest market, supplanting the US. “Whereas the US was Israel’s largest export market in 2010, the EU (the 27 EU member states; not the 17 countries that make up the Eurozone) rose to first place, accounting for a third of Israeli export of goods. The change occurred because exports to the US fell by 2% a year in the past two years, while exports to the EU rose by 20% a year, despite the shekel’s appreciation against the euro since 2009.”

The UK, the Netherlands, and Germany are Israel’s top exports destinations in the EU. Exports to the UK rose 53% to $10 billion. Exports to China tripled in 2010-11 to 6% of total exports in 2011 from 2% in 2009, reaching $237 million last year.

Israeli exports to Egypt and Jordan rose 26% in 2011.

Turkey became Israel’s third-largest export market in Q1 2011, with the country’s exports to Turkey totaling $500 million, excluding diamonds, the Israel Export and International Cooperation Institute reports.

According to the Export Institute, most of that rise is attributable to a 57% rise in Israel’s exports of chemicals and refined oil products to Turkey in Q1, which together comprised $260 million.

In April, Turkey’s Today’s Zaman reported that trade volume between Turkey and Israel was at its highest level in history.

As diplomatic relations took a turn for the worse following the flotilla attack, bilaterial trade flourished. Co-Chair of the Turkish-Israeli Business Council Ekrem Guvendiren told the Zaman on Sunday that supply and demand dictated that business continue as usual.

Guvendiren said that the Turkey’s policy has always been to work with Palestinian leaders as well as with Israel, and noted that diplomatic normalization would further benefit Turkish-Israeli trade.

Israel and Turkey signed a bilateral free trade agreement in 1997 that caused trade to nearly double within two years. Since then, trade volume has increased consistently, growing from $1.3 billion in 2001 to $3.5 billion in 2010, the first year that saw trade volume exceed $2 billion.

Israel’s exports to China in the first quarter were up 12% year-on-year and totaled $443 million, making China the country’s fifth-largest export market. The US retained its place as the No. 1 export market for Israel, followed by the Netherlands.

Notwithstanding political tensions between Israel and Turkey, Turkey rose to Israel’s third largest export market in the first quarter from ninth place in the corresponding quarter of 2010, the Israel Export and International Cooperation Institute reports today. Exports of goods (excluding diamonds) to Turkey totaled $500 million in the first quarter, 73% more than in the corresponding quarter.

The US is still Israel’s largest export market, with exports to that country totaling $3 billion

Exports to Turkey rose more than exports to other countries. According to Export Institute figures, most of the growth is thanks to to a 57% increase in exports of chemicals and refined oil products to $260 million in the first quarter.

China is Israel’s fifth largest export market, and the largest export market in Asia. Exports to China totaled $443 million in the first quarter, 12% more than in the corresponding quarter. Exports to India fell 6% to $336 million, putting it in eighth place, mainly due to unusually heavy exports to it in the corresponding quarter. Exports of avionics were affected by a single deal in 2010, and fell from $100 million to zero.

Israel’s top ten export markets are, in order, the US, the Netherlands, Turkey, Germany, China, Italy, the UK, India, France, and Canada.
