    India, Turkey to discuss FTA to boost bilateral trade

    Turkey today said it will discuss opening up of their markets with India under a free trade agreement (FTA).

    “We will be discussing issues relating to non-tariff and tariff barriers under FTA with Indian authorities,” Turkish Trade Minister Zafer Caglayan said here in his address to India-Turkey Business Forum.

    Both the countries are exploring the possibility of FTA to boost bilateral trade.

    The current two-way commerce is $3.14 billion and experts said an FTA between the two would significantly enhance the trade.

    Major imports from Turkey comprise minerals, fertilisers, nuclear reactors and machinery, while exports include pharma, manmade yarn and electronic goods.

    Besides, the visiting minister asked Indian corporates to make investment in Turkey because of its strategic geographical location and potential for economic growth.

    Referring to sectors where investment can be made in Turkey, Caglayan said his country has plans of huge investments in energy sector in the next 10 years.

    About $120 million would be invested in the energy sector, he said.

    201210 caglayanTurkish foreign trade minister said on Sunday that Turkish exports would exceed 112 billion U.S. dollars this year.

    State Minister for foreign trade Zafer Caglayan delivered a speech at a parliamentary session on 2011 budget of Foreign Trade Undersecretariat.

    Caglayan said that Turkey weathered global crisis successfully and the Turkish banking sector was not affected by crisis.

    “In 2008, exports were 132 billion U.S. dollars and it was a great achievement. The figure dropped to 102.2 billion U.S. dollars in 2009,” he said.

    Caglayan said that the country’s exports would exceed 112 billion U.S. dollar in 2010.

    Turkey would reach 500 billion U.S. dollars of exports in 2023, he added.

    Ghana, Turkey in oil barter deal

    oil2Turkey says it has reached an agreement with Ghana to buy oil from the country through a barter scheme arrangement.

    News in the Turkish media seen by ghanabusinessnews.com says Turkey’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Zafer Çağlayan has indicated that he has had talks with two oil producing countries in West Africa – Nigeria and Ghana, and the two countries have responded positively to such an arrangement. The Turkish Minister recently toured Ghana, Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea, all oil producing countries. And while in Ghana, he was reported to have met Ghana’s Vice President John Mahama.

    Under the arrangement, he said Turkey will purchase oil from Nigeria and Ghana and pay for it by investing in tourism, energy, health and other infrastructure.

    Ghana officially became an oil producing country following the launch of commercial activities by President Mills at the Jubilee oil field yesterday December 15, 2010.

    Turkey Seeks To Improve Trade Relations with Nigeria

    THE Turkish Minister for Foreign Trade, Zafer Caglayan has disclosed that the volume of trade between Nigeria and Turkey stands at about 1 billion dollars, just as he said that there were projections for an increase in the coming years.

    Speaking in Abuja while addressing a delegation of Turkish and Nigeria business men, Caglayan  who called for an increase in trade relations between Nigeria and Turkey, stressed that Nigeria was the fastest growing economy in the Western part of Africa,  adding that as a nation, Nigeria must harness its potentials to the fullest because  of the important role it gets to play in developing the region.

    The Turkish Minister who urged all the business men from his country to increase trade relations with Nigeria, stressed the need for them to permanent their businesses in the country, adding that Turkey was prepared to work with Nigeria in different sectors of the economy, including, mining, textiles, Oil and Gas, Chemistry and Food security.

    caglayan1Turkish State Minister for foreign trade Zafer Caglayan has invited Canadian businessmen to invest in Turkey.

    Addressing the Turkish-Canada Business Forum in Istanbul on Tuesday, Caglayan said Turkey provided the most comprehensive incentive system for research and development.

    “Turkey will invest $110 billion in energy sector over the next ten years. Canadian nuclear energy firms are welcome to engage in talks for the construction of Turkey’s second nuclear energy plant,” said Caglayan.

    Caglayan said Turkey exported over 20,000 different items to 221 of the 224 customs zones.

    “The region we reside in is very significant. If Canadian companies want to take their place in this region, it goes through Turkey,” said Caglayan. He said Turkey was a major supply center at the heart of Caucausus, the Middle East, Africa, Eastern Europe, at a four-hour flight away from 56 countries, urging Candian Trade Minister Peter van Loan and Canadian businessmen to realise Turkey’s significance.

    Caglayan listed energy, environment, innovative technologies and green energy as possible areas of cooperation between the two countries.

    “The implementation of free market rules, unrestricted transfer of profit and capital, unrestricted foreign exchange transactions… with its logistics, human resources, 73 million population with an average of 28 years of age, easy access to neighbouring countries, free trade agreements with 17 countries. When you add these up, Turkey offers great advantages,” said Caglayan.

    He said Turkey had free trade agreements with majority of the European countries, adding that companies making investments to Turkey would seize all the advantages of Turkey.

    Tunisia, Turkey Boosting Tourism Cooperation

    Tunisia (Tunis) – Tunisia’s Tourism Minister Slim Tlatli had a meeting with Mr. Zafar Caglayan, Turkish State Minister for Foreign Trade, which turned on reviewing bilateral co-operation, Global Arab Network reports according to state-run Tunisian News Agency (TAP).

    tunisia tourismThe two sides highlighted joint will to hoist economic relations to the level of their political relations and the cultural and historic affinities binding the two countries.

    Mr. Slim Tlatli briefed his guest on Tunisia’s tourist sector and its objectives for the next five-year period, in light of the new development strategy ordered by the Head of State, stressing Tunisia’s will to further strengthen co- operation with Turkey, notably regarding reinforcement of tourist flow, management of the sector and vocational training in this field.

    For his part, Mr. Caglayan indicated that the quality of bilateral relations militates in favour of a more important economic and tourist co-operation, specifying that it falls on the two countries’ economic operators to explore the best ways that would ensure a mutually fruitful co-operation.

    It is worth reminding that Tunisia annually receives 14,000 Turkish tourists, while 29,000 Tunisian holiday-makers visit Turkey each year .

    On the other hand, TAP reported that Co-operation between Tunisia and Turkey and means to strengthen it were the focus of the talk that Development and International Co-operation Minister Mohamed Nouri Jouini had, on Thursday with Turkish State Minister for Foreign Trade Zafar Caglayan. The talk provided the opportunity to point up the importance to hoist co-operation to higher levels, qualitatively and quantitatively.

    Mr. Mohamed Nouri Jouini stressed the similarity of the two countries’ economic policies characterised by their openness and efficiency. Such a convergence, he said, is a stimulus to intensify partnership between the two countries’ businessmen, underlining that Tunisia wishes to attract larger number of Turkish investors, particularly in the buoyant sectors.

    For his part, Mr. Zafar Caglayan commended the level of bilateral relations, underscoring the opportunities of the two countries, notably in the fields of trade, investment and creation of joint projects.

    The Turkish minister specified that the strong participation of the two countries’ businessmen in the second Partnership Council’s meeting illustrates the two sides’ will to entrench and diversify co-operation in the two countries’ interest.
