  • Boxing: Gassiev defeats Dorticos in semi-final showdown

Murat Gassiev defeats Yunier Dorticos by vicious 12th round KO which could be a candidate for KO of the year. The fight was a part of the world boxing super series tournament, the second leg of the semi-final round (the first of which was won by Usyk). Murat Gassiev will take on Oleksandr Usyk in the final, which will take place in May in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

The final of this tournament is promised to be a spectacular event with many fans from all over the world looking to book their tickets as soon as they become available. This featured bout is anticipated to live up to expectations as both fighters have proven their worth by defeating their previous adversaries in impressive fashion. Usyk is known as a boxer puncher who will be looking to use agility and quick footwork to outbox his opponent. Gassiev on the other hand is a KO artist who has knocked out 70% of the opponents he has faced. He will be looking to press the action, come forward and apply measured aggression.

Whatever the outcome, this night should be one to remember and one not to be missed.

  • Boxing: Billy Joe Saunders cruises to a unanimous decision over David Lemieux by displaying impeccable boxing skills

Billy joe Saunders defends his WBO World middleweight title in fashion by dominating David Lemieux over the course of 12 rounds. The fight started off as competitive as fighters took some time to ‘feel’ each other out. However, as early as the second round it started to appear that the jab of Saunders was giving Lemieux trouble.

As the fight wore on, Lemieux was finding it increasingly difficult to catch the ever illusive head of Saunders. Lemieux marching forward hitting thin air was generally the theme throughout the fight and the bout concluded with a decisive victory in favor of Saunders.

Lemieux goes on to reconsider his future in the sport of boxing whilst Saunders looks to unify the division with some possible matchups for the future. Who’s next for Saunders? GGG? Canelo or Jacobs?

  • Boxing: Vasyl Lomachenko retains his world super-featherweight title

Vasyl Lomachenko retains his WBO Super-featherweight world title after battling for six hard rounds. His adversary, Guillermo Rigondeaux refused to get up from his stool after the sixth round prompting the referee, Steve Willis to stop the fight.

The highly anticipated bout, which took place at the Madison Square Gardens in Las Vegas, marked a key milestone in featherweight boxing. Arguably the two best fighters of the lower divisions went to head to head to the better fighter was. Rigondeaux, who went up in weight to take on Lomachenko claimed he had injured his left hand and could not continue on the fight. Much speculation has been given to the authenticity of the claim and many fans argue that Rigondeaux could not cope with the frantic movement and agility of his rival and decided to quit. The true reason for a fight is to stay at the end of the fight, but there is no doubt that it will remain the center of discussion for many years to come.

Lomachenko goes on to be recognized as the best p4p fighter in the world and one of the best fighters of our generation. Rigondeaux on the other hand may need to consider hanging up the gloves. At 37 years of age, it really begs the question, how much more does it have to offer in this brutal sport?

The countdown to the Olympics took a huge leap forward when the European Amateur Boxing Championships began in Turkey yesterday.

Though this is not a qualifying event, the results contribute towards the seedings used for the first time at next year’s Games.

The Europeans are the hardest of all the international championships because of the strength in depth. There are no Cubans or Americans but that is more than made up for with the involvement of the former Soviet republics, who churned out a host of brilliant boxers.

Though competitors represent their nations in these championships, they are ultimately fighting for Olympic places.

Team GB – which has 15 fighters in Turkey in arguably the best prepared group in the history of amateur boxing – is guaranteed representation in five categories as hosts but will be looking to fill all 10 divisions. Competition is fierce but with little more than a year to go we already know the likely stars.

Luke Campbell became the first English boxer to claim European gold in 47 years when he won at 54kg in Liverpool three years ago.

Since recovering from a hand injury last year he is unbeaten in seven multinational bouts.

And after moving up to 56kg [featherweight] the six-footer feels far more comfortable and will fancy his chances of gold again.

Thomas Stalker, a former European silver medallist and Commonwealth champion at lightweight, is moving up to light welterweight (64kg), which brings him into competition for the Olympic spot with Beijing veteran Bradley Saunders.

It is a risk worth taking.

Stalker does not want to make the same mistake as Frankie Gavin, who qualified for Beijing at lightweight then found he was unable to make the weight.

There is tough competition, too, at 52kg, between Andrew Selby of Wales and England’s Khaled Yafai.
