    Netanyahu’s Last Battle

Dr. Abdullah Manaz : The MiddleEast Analyst

The most important development in the last Palestine & Israel war was the results of opinion polls regarding the elections to be held in Gaza and the West Bank. It was clearly understood that the Fetih Movement would lose both the Presidency and its majority in the Assembly in these elections. This situation alarmed both Palestinian President Abbas and Netanyahu.

The first step came from Abbas and postponed the elections to an uncertain date. Then Netanyahu stepped up his plan to evict Palestinians around Jerusalem from their homes. He took action to evacuate the homes of about 500 Palestinians in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood. Radical Jewish Groups also started demonstrations and riots in this neighborhood. However, they encountered resistance from the Palestinians that they never expected. Netanyahu increased his pressure without understanding the religious importance of the month of Ramadan for Muslims. Netanyahu announced on Sunday (May 9th) that the Israeli army will hold a major military exercise in the Lebanese border, the West Bank and Gaza. This was actually the first announcement of the war. The attack of Israeli security forces on the Aksa Mosque ignited the fuse of the bomb. Hamas responded with the same harshness to Netanyahu’s attempt. It announced that if the Israeli Army does not withdraw from the Holy Land, they will respond strongly. Indeed, Hamas fired more than 1000 rockets at Israeli targets overnight.

The range of Hamas Rockets varied between 70 and 100 km. Such an attack came as a surprise to Israel. The rockets that reached TelAviv have killed 5 Israelis and injured dozens so far. A great panic started within the Israeli Police. On the evening of May 11, Palestinians demonstrated in all Israeli cities. Especially in the city of Lid, the Israeli Police lost control and a state of emergency was declared.

Netanyahu claimed that Hamas would pay a huge price. Warplanes hit hundreds of targets in Gaza on May 11-12. Around 50 Palestinians have died so far. 13 of them are children and 4 of them are women.

Although Netanyahu spoke harshly, he contacted Cairo and the United Arab Emirates and offered to mediate with Hamas. Hamas, on the other hand, refused mediation offers and declared that they “do not trust the Israeli government and are ready for a great war”. The Kassam Brigades, which are the Special Military Units of Hamas, said that: “Some of their commanders were martyred in Israeli attacks and they will hit an important target every day”.

It is the first time that Israel has faced such strong Palestinian resistance. Many Zionist writers within Israel and in the US admit that “Israel fell short for the first time”.

Although Netanyahu succeeds in staying in the Government by going to early elections last years, this time he will not be able to do so. This war seems to be Netanyahu’s Final War. The Israeli people are tired of the war, with the exception of some radical groups. Especially 17-year-old youth recruited into the army complain of long military service periods. The New Generation aspires to live in peace with the Palestinian people with whom they live on the street.

ANKARA, Turkey — President Abdullah Gul met with Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas on Monday (December 6th) to discuss the Middle East, peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians and relations between Turkey and the Palestinian territories. Gul said after the meeting that in order for peace to prevail in the Middle East, the Palestinian territories must become an independent country. Abbas heads to Greece on Tuesday.

In other news, a Danish court ruled on Monday that the bank accounts of the Kurdish TV station Roj TV — frozen in August over accusations that the channel was a mouthpiece for the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) — should be released. The appeals court upheld a ruling from October, which said all ten bank accounts containing around 43,900 euros should be unfrozen. According to the judge, freezing the accounts violated European laws protecting freedom of expression. (AFP, Hurriyet, CNN Turk – 06/12/10)

Turkish President Abdullah Gul and President Mahmoud Abbas of Palestine held a tete-a-tete meeting and later co-chaired talks between Turkish and Palestinian delegations at the Cankaya Presidential Palace in Ankara on Monday.

Appearing at a joint press conference with Abbas afterwards, Turkish President Gul said developments regarding the critical peace process in the Middle East were on the agenda of the Palestinian leader’s talks in Turkey.

Gul said that an independent Palestinian state, with East Jerusalem as its capital, should be founded in order to establish peace in the Middle East.

“We have previously expressed our strong support for the peace talks that started in the region in September. In order for the continuation of these peace talks, Israel should give up constructing new settlements and demolishing houses, besides, it should display a positive stance,” Gul said.

The Turkish president also noted that Jerusalem’s unique status was of great importance.

“Studies aiming at changing the identity and culture of Jerusalem, a city which has been home to different religions for thousands of years, should be stopped immediately,” Gul said.

Gul stated that Turkey would maintain its close cooperation and solidarity with Palestine, moreover, it would continue to extend social and economic support for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.

Upon a question on Turkish Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Feridun Sinirlioglu’s recent talks with Israeli officials in Geneva, President Gul said the talks had been held at a “technical level”.

“Turkey has clear expectations regarding the normalization of its relations with Israel,” the president said.

Gul also noted that Turkey welcomed Brazil and Argentina’s decision to recognize the state of Palestine.

“Presence of a Palestinian state is a reality. We expect everybody to recognize the independent state of Palestine just like we did in the past,” he added.

DISSOLUTION OF PALESTINIAN GOVERNMENT IS NOT IN QUESTION, PALESTINIAN PRESIDENT

Palestine’s president said on Monday that no demands had been voiced for the dissolution of the Palestinian government.

Speaking at a press conference following his talks with Turkish President Abdullah Gul in capital Ankara, President Mahmoud Abbas of Palestine said his country was aware that Turkey attached great importance to the Palestinian issue.

Abbas said all the issues concerning Palestine had been thoroughly discussed during his latest talks with Turkish officials.

Noting that his country had not yet received any clear notice for the resumption of peace talks with Israel, Abbas said there was also no indicator showing that the Jewish settlements in Palestine, particularly the ones in Jerusalem, had been stopped.

“Unless these settlements are stopped, we cannot carry on with the peace talks,” he said. The president also noted that Palestine would have various options to follow in case peace talks did not start again.

Upon a question on what these options would be, Abbas said one of the primary alternatives would be to call on other states to recognize Palestine’s independence, adding his country did not consider dissolving the Palestinian government an option.

Abbas also noted that the alternate methods would be implemented gradually if peace talks with Israel failed.
