Yeni Raki Carries "The Spirit of Istanbul" to Europe

Increasingly more events are being held via the “The Spirit of Istanbul” communication platform launched last year in Berlin by leading Turkish and worldwide raki brand Yeni Raki. This week, Yeni Raki will offer the Europeans a new concept in entertainment: “The Spirit of Istanbul Week,” featuring a series of entertaining events in contracted restaurants in various European cities between 8 and 16 March 2013.

Yeni Raki will also hold home parties for selected individuals unable to attend the restaurant events. Moving confidently towards world brand status through the activities, Yeni Raki also contributes significantly to the promotion of Istanbul.

With “The Spirit of Istanbul Week” to be held from March 8-16, 2013 in such important European cities as London, Amsterdam and Berlin, Yeni Raki will bring the energy of Istanbul to Europe.

By arranging special weekly events in contracted venues, Yeni Raki aims to show Europeans the modern aspects of raki enjoyment. Throughout the week, Yeni Raki will decorate these venues with giant visuals featuring the Istanbul skyline, and offer entertaining activities such as rhythm and Istanbul dance workshops.

Those unable to visit the event venues will still have the chance to win a Yeni Raki house party by taking part in a competition organized on the company’s official Facebook page. The parties will allow Yeni Raki to carry Istanbul’s spirit to people’s homes, offering a host of entertainment and surprise activities including oriental dancing, percussion shows, DJs, Turkish cuisine and more.

In order to promote the event, Yeni Raki has been using outdoor, digital and guerilla campaigns to decorate the streets of cities like London, Amsterdam and Berlin with “The Spirit of Istanbul Week” visuals. Yeni Raki plans to continue these promotional events throughout Europe and the world.

Syria’s Assad hails Turkey anti-Erdogan opposition

display_imageDAMASCUS: President Bashar al-Assad on Thursday hailed Turkish opposition to Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s backing for the revolt that began in Syria nearly two years ago, in a statement seen by AFP.

The statement comes after Assad met a Turkish opposition delegation, which prompted Erdogan to issue a stinging criticism of the politicians, asking why they were meeting with “such a dictator.”

Assad told the Republican People’s Party delegation there was “a need to distinguish between the stance of the Turkish people, who support stability in Syria, and the positions of Erdogan’s government, which supports terrorism, extremism and destabilisation in the region,” it said.

“The Syrian people appreciates the position adopted by forces and parties in Turkey that reject the Erdogan government’s negative impact on our societies, which are multi-religious and multi-ethnic,” Assad said.

The Turkish delegation, headed by Hassan Akgul, stressed “the Turkish people’s refusal to interfere in Syrian affairs, and a commitment to good neighbourly relations,” the statement said.

The visitors also “warned of the risks of the Syrian crisis’s impact on Turkey and other countries in the region,” it added.

Speaking on television, Erdogan asked: “Why is this country’s main opposition party sending its three lawmakers to meet with this dictator, this tyrant? What do they want to achieve?”

Damascus, meanwhile, called on the international community in letters to the United Nations to condemn Ankara’s role in the Syrian conflict, which has left some 70,000 people dead.

“Syria hopes that the international community… will fulfil its responsibilities clearly and sincerely, and denounce the role of the Turkish government and other states that fund the Al-Qaeda-linked terrorist groups, while bearing them responsible for what is happening in Syria,” the letters said.

Assad’s government has systematically blamed the violence in Syria on a foreign-backed plot, and has frequently accused Turkey of channelling funds and weapons to the armed opposition.

Reacting to the letters, Erdogan asked if Assad would “complain about Turkey to the United Nations just because we are accommodating 250,000 Syrians on our soil? This person is committing a kind of genocide there… Will he complain about us because of this?”

Ankara broke off relations with Damascus soon after the outbreak of Syria’s uprising, which morphed into an armed insurgency after the regime unleashed a brutal crackdown against dissent that began in mid-March 2011.

Turkey hosts some 200,000 Syrians who fled the violence, and earlier this month it hosted a Syrian opposition election for Aleppo’s provincial council.

  • CIA Seizes Bin Laden Son-In-Law In Turkey

CIA Seizes Bin Laden Son-In-Law In Turkey

Osama bin Laden’s son-in-law Sulaiman Abu Ghaith was seized by CIA agents and taken to the United States, Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.) confirmed to the Associated Press today.

bin-laden-son-in-lawAbu Ghaith, the former spokesman of the Al-Qaeda network, was seized last month at a luxury hotel in Ankara after a tip-off from CIA and was held there by the police despite a US request for his extradition.

Turkish authorities deported Abu Ghaith to Jordan on March 1 to be sent back to Kuwait but he was seized by CIA agents in Jordan and taken to the United States, according to the Turkish newspaper Hurriyet.

King called it a “very significant victory” in the war on terror.

“Definitely, one by one, we are getting the top echelons of al-Qaeda,” King said. “I give the (Obama) administration credit for this: it’s steady and it’s unrelenting and it’s very successful.”

Abu Ghaith’s deportation coincided with a visit by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry to Ankara as part of a regional tour, it added.

The Turkish foreign ministry declined to comment on the report while the US embassy in Ankara told AFP: “We’re aware of the reports.”

Ankara considers Abu Ghaith a “stateless” person as he was stripped of his Kuwaiti nationality after appearing in videos defending the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States and threatening further violence.

The United States wanted him extradited over his alleged connection to the attacks.

He appeared in a propaganda video in the aftermath of 9/11, standing beside bin Laden, who was killed in May 2011 in Pakistan in a covert U.S. operation.

Abu Ghaith was detained in Turkey after he allegedly entered the country illegally from Iran.

He was freed by an Ankara court because he did not commit any crime on Turkish soil and local media claimed Turkey had hesitated to extradite him to the United States fearing it could become a target of Al-Qaeda.

The number of pay TV homes in the Mideast and North Africa will double to 16 million by 2018, with revenue set to jump 42 percent, according to a forecast.

LONDON – The number of pay TV households and pay TV revenue in the Middle East and North Africa will see strong growth through 2018, according to a new forecast from research firm Digital TV Research.

Study: Google No. 2 in Piracy Ad Placements

The third edition of its Digital TV Middle East and North Africa report cited growth in Turkey and measures to combat piracy as key drivers.

As of the end of 2012, fewer than 15 percent of TV homes in the region legitimately paid for TV signals, according to its data. But this will climb to 21.6 percent by 2018, the firm estimated.

STORY: France Examines Even Tougher Anti-Piracy Laws

“Legitimate pay TV revenues [for the 16 countries covered in the report] will grow by more than 42 percent between 2012 and 2018 to $4.76 billion,” study author Simon Murray said. Turkey accounts for more than half of the total.

The number of pay TV households in the region will double to 16 million between 2011 and 2018, he projected.

Internet-delivered TV services will also be a key growth driver. The number of homes paying for IPTV services will overtake cable subscribers in 2016, led by gains in Turkey and Egypt, the study predicted. But penetration of IPTV will be higher in such countries as the United Arab Emirates (46 percent), Qatar (37 percent) and Cyprus (32 percent).

Overall, IPTV revenue will more than quadruple between 2012 and 2018 to $644 million.

Murray said that the Digital TV Research forecasts are based on the 16 most advanced countries — with 67 million TV households — in the broader Middle East and North Africa region. However, there are 104 million TV homes across 31 countries in the whole region, and that figure will jump to 115 million by 2017, he estimated.

“Major countries outside those that we have undertaken full forecasts for — that have longer-term potential — include Iran (11 million TV households), Afghanistan (4.4 million TV households), Iraq (4.8 million TV households) and Uzbekistan (4.1 million TV households),” the report said.

  • ‘Two Wandering Women’ to host multicultural tour of Turkey

‘Two Wandering Women’ to host multicultural tour of Turkey

    Worthington LibrariesWednesday March 6, 2013 1:17 PM

owlThe city of Istanbul, Turkey, is the only city in the world built on two continents, according to the Worthington Libraries’ Culturegrams database. As a land bridge between Europe and Asia, Turkey has been the site of great migrations, battles and innovations throughout recorded history.

On Tuesday, March 12, Worthington Libraries will host Carol Gray and Nancy Staley — the Two Wandering Women — who will take participants on a multimedia tour of this monumental culture. The two traveled over 2,000 miles throughout the country, and during the program, Turkey Top 10, they’ll share some of the memorable sights of Turkey’s cities and natural wonders.

In the Topkapi Palace, home to the Sultans for centuries, the tour will travel behind the walls of the Harem, where you’ll learn about the hidden lifestyle within. Also on the itinerary is Istanbul’s magnificent Blue Mosque, where tens of thousands of blue tiles line the walls of the 17th century structure.

Those attending will also wander through Istanbul’s colorful Grand Bazaar, as well as the Spice Market and Fish Market, and see the natural wonder of Pamukkale, where huge limestone terraces — formed by natural mineral springs –line the hillsides.

The tour will include the sights of Ephesus, one of the oldest Greek settlements on the Aegean Sea, and a dance of the Whirling Dervishes.

Next, pay a visit to the moonlike landscapes of Cappadocia where, from the sixth through 10th centuries, persecuted Christians found refuge. You’ll see aerial photographs of the city and views of its underground cities and rock chapels.

Gray and Staley are former educators who met in 1988 and discovered a shared passion for travel and photography. Since then they have traveled the world, documenting their journeys through countries like Peru, Italy, China and Romania.

Turkey Top Ten, which will start at 7 p.m. at Old Worthington Library, 820 High St., is presented in partnership with the Worthington International Friendship Association.

Meredith Southard is an adult services librarian for Worthington Libraries.
