The Democratic Party’s national convention in Charlotte, N.C., may have doubled down on insulting the U.S. military community.
The Democratic National Committee has already apologized for using a photo of four Soviet-era Russian warships in a giant stage backdrop intended to illustrate the party’s support for military personnel and veterans.
That huge image, visible in the Time Warner Cable Arena during speeches by Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry and retired Admiral John B. Nathman, also depicted a synchronized formation of jet aircraft that convention-goers assumed were American fighter planes.
But the F-5 fighter planes in the photo are part of the air force of Turkey, a nation whose government is now jailing journalists and establishing Islam as a state religion.
Brad Woodhouse, a spokesman for the Democratic National Committee, did not respond when the The Daily Caller asked why the convention planners displayed Turkish-flown aircraft alongside Russian warships while seeking support from the American military community.
On Sept. 12, Democrats apologized for using the picture of Soviet-era, Russian-operated ships after the slip up was first reported by the Navy Times. The Navy Times also received a tip that the planes depicted may have been from the Turkish Air Force. (NAVAL EXPERT: Ships shown during Democratic convention tribute to veterans were Russian)
The vessels, with their distinct radars and blue-cross-motif Russian naval flags, occupied the center of the massive backdrop. The aircraft were depicted flying in a seven-plane formation on the upper right.
At least three of the ships in the image were designed and built by the Soviet totalitarian state that killed 20 million of its own citizens. Amid steady pressure from the U.S. military, the Soviet Union collapsed in 1989, marking its defeat in the four-decade Cold War. One of the warships may now be part of the Ukrainian Navy.
The Russian ships and Turkish aircraft were shown during the final night of the Charlotte convention on Sept. 6, shortly before President Barack Obama accepted his party’s nomination to serve a second term.
The image first appeared in the closing minutes of an address by Sen. Kerry.
Obama is “a commander-in-chief who gives our troops the tools and training they need in war,” Kerry said, reinforced by visuals of foreign ships and aircraft operated by foreign-trained military personnel. (SEE ALSO: TheDC’s complete coverage of the 2012 DNC)
Martin Rosenkranz, a military aircraft expert and editor-in-chief of a military aviation journal in Austria, revealed the fighter jets’ origin to The Daily Caller.
“The aircraft in this image displayed are not U.S. [operated] aircraft,” he told TheDC.
“The jets are most likely from the Turkish air force [because] the formation and the type (F-5) flown is very typical of the seven-ship formation flown by the Turkish Air Force Display Team known as the ‘Turkish Stars,’” said Rosenkranz.
“There is no other display team worldwide” that uses a similar seven-aircraft formation.
Rosenkranz’s argument is bolstered by two other factors.
The aircraft shown at the Democrats’ convention are old F-5 aircraft. They were were designed in the United States and sold to many countries, including Turkey — whose display team uses that same model.
Also, the planes depicted in the Democrats’ Sept. 6 photo montage display an unusual red and white striped pattern painted on the underside of their fuselages — most visible on the lowest and best-lit of the F-5s in the image.
During a June 2012 airshow in Norway, seven of the “Turkish Stars” F-5s flew in formation above a cheering crowd. They all featured that same striped paint job, which can be seen 45 seconds into an amateur video available online.
The latest Charlotte faux pas comes as Obama has called for help from Turkey’s prime minister, Recep Erdogan, to stem widespread Islamist riots against U.S. facilities and diplomatic personnel.
Obama and Islamist leaders agree the riots were spurred in part by an anti-Islamic video produced in California, although many regional experts say upsurge was caused by Islamist groups competing for support from anti-American voters.
After blaming the video, the White House asked YouTube on Sept. 14 to consider removing the footage from its Web servers. That same night, just after midnight Pacific time, California police drove the film’s producer to an interview with federal law enforcement authorities to discuss a possible parole violation.
Turks chant anti-US slogans and hold placards reading, “America be damned, no to Islamophobia,” during a demonstration against an anti-Islam film made in the US, at Beyazit Square in Istanbul on September 14, 2012.
Sat Sep 15, 2012 3:40AM GMT
Hundreds of Turks have poured into the streets in the city of Istanbul to condemn a blasphemous anti-Islam film recently made in the United States, Press TV reports.
The protesters marched through the streets in Istanbul after Friday prayers, burned US and Israeli flags and chanted anti-US and anti-Israel slogans.
The demonstrators were also carrying banners and placards reading, “Israel must be destroyed,” and “America be damned, no to Islamophobia.”
Demonstrations over the low-budget anti-Islam film have been held across the Muslim world, with protesters storming US embassies and torching US flags.
Demonstrators in Iran, Sudan, Egypt, Yemen, Tunisia, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Malaysia, Kashmir, Pakistan, Iraq, Gaza, Morocco, Syria, Kuwait, Nigeria, Kenya, and some other Muslim countries poured into the streets after Friday prayers to defend their faith and condemn the movie that denigrated Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
Condemning the movie, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Friday, “This is a strong provocation against our way of life.”
“Insulting the Prophet (PBUH) cannot be justified as freedom of expression. Religion and the Prophet (PBUH) are sacred values and are untouchable,” Erdogan said in a speech at a conference in the Ukrainian Black Sea resort of Yalta.

via PressTV – Turks hold demo in Istanbul to condemn anti-Islam movie.
When I left New York on the first day of February, it was unseasonably warm. With the thermometer pushing 60 degrees, I sneaked in one more day of wearing shorts before winter would hit once again, as I boarded an airplane. One ocean, two continents and 10 hours later, I saw a city covered in the worst snowstorm it had suffered in decades.
Not quite what I expected when I landed in Istanbul, Turkey; a city I would be calling home for the next five months. Aside from personal accounts of friends and the guidebook I read on the flight over, I knew next to nothing of the city.
I knew even less of the language. I had learned how to say hello, but if I were completely lost and had no idea how to get to where I was living, being able to only say hello to a stranger on the street really wouldn’t help a whole lot. For the first time in my life, I could not talk; or more correctly, I could not communicate.
After finally recovering from jet lag caused by the seven-hour time difference, I went out; no objective in mind. At first it was to familiarize myself with my surroundings, but I found myself doing this many months down the road as well. Sometimes I went to new locales I had yet to explore, sometimes to my usual haunts. On most nights I would make the five-minute walk to the Galata Bridge, the bridge that connects the new side of the city with the older, historical side of the city (think Constantinople). During the half-mile walk, I passed by vendors selling cheese and tomato sandwiches, roasted chestnuts, simit, which are similar to a bagel and balık ekmek, grilled fish sandwiches served with lettuce, onion and tomato.
There is a place in my heart reserved for potentially-unhygienic-but-always-delicious street food, so I became a repeat customer to many of these vendors. If there had been no language barrier, I would know them all on a first-name basis.
After speaking with my fellow foreign students—in English—I learned that many of them were fearful of these vendors. Every Sunday I went to the local produce market in the “bad part” of town to buy my produce for the week. I could pick up kilos of fruits and vegetables for mere pennies, and I wasn’t about to let that opportunity pass me by.
I began telling myself every day, not to let this opportunity pass me by. I went to those questionable food vendors, not only because the food was delicious and cheap, which it certainly was, but because I wanted to belong. One particular favorite of mine was a man on the Galata Bridge who grilled spiced meatballs called köfte. Alongside the meat on the charcoal lay a cigarette, which the man took a puff of in between flips of the patties. Next to the grill sat a glass of Rakı, a grape-based liquor that many consider the drink of Turkey.
Life in Turkey was different. Cats and dogs would wander around the school, go in and out of the classrooms and nobody would bat an eye. Eventually, I didn’t either. It became normal.
By the time I was about to leave Istanbul, many of the friends I met there had already departed. So by myself, I went out; just as I did so many times before. I had already packed my clothes and went to the bazaar to buy goodies that I was hoping, with fingers crossed, would not get taken away at customs. I bought a köfte sandwich and a can of Efes and sat down on one of the many benches overlooking the Bosphorus Strait for one last time. I hadn’t spoken a word of English that day; only Turkish.
The night before, a few of my friends were to return home to Holland, so we met one last time to drink tea, smoke nargile, or hookah pipe and play okey, a game similar to rummy.
Surprisingly it was mostly Turkish students I would see eating the McDonalds and Burger King, not the American or European students. Turkey, or in this case, Turkish food, which quickly became one of my favorite cuisines, would be gone soon. There was no time to waste on things we could have at home.
My voice was hoarse from smoking too much the night before; I sat down and took a swig of that mediocre—but comforting—beer and a bite of my sandwich. The lights of the Blue Mosque and the Aya Sofya reflected on the water, the tram buzzed by and the fact that I was sitting on one continent looking at another had still not worn off. The view was not unique per se, for I had seen it many times before, but this final time around, it felt different. It finally felt like home. I was a foreigner, but this was no longer a foreign land.

USS Laboon transits the Delaware River.Rick Rozoff (Stop NATO) – Following the deaths of American ambassador to Libya J. Christopher Stevens and three members of his staff in a coordinated attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi on September 11, Washington is deploying two Aegis class destroyers off the coast of Libya as well as having already dispatched Marines to Benghazi and elsewhere in the nation.
The guided missile warship USS Laboon is already positioned in the Mediterranean Sea near Libya and USS McFaul is heading to the same destination from the Strait of Gibraltar. Both are equipped with Tomahawk cruise missiles, used in a massive barrage against Libya in the opening hours of so-called Operation Odyssey Dawn on March 19, 2011.
In the words of a Pentagon official cited by CNN, “These ships will give the administration flexibility” in the event Washington orders new attacks inside Libya.
According to the same American news source, “The US Navy typically keeps up to four Aegis-equipped missile warships in the eastern Mediterranean to aid in defending Israel and missile defense for southern Europe.”
The latter is a reference to the Obama administration’s European Phased Adaptive Approach interceptor missile system which the North Atlantic Treaty Organization announced to have achieved initial operational capability at its summit in Chicago in May. U.S. guided missile destroyers and cruisers carrying Standard Missile-3 interceptors have been active in the Mediterranean since USS Monterey was deployed there in March of 2011, the month the U.S. and NATO began over six-months of missile and air attacks against Libya.
According to a Reuters report, eight American Marines were flown into Benghazi by helicopter the day after the attack on the U.S. mission, with two of them being killed and two wounded in a fierce mortar attack on the building.
The Associated Press claimed that the U.S. has deployed 50 members of the elite U.S. Marine Corps Fleet Antiterrorism Security Team to Libya.
U.S. Africa Command’s first war and NATO’s first war in Africa officially ended on October 31 of last year, after the U.S. and Britain launched well over 100 Tomahawk missiles into Libya and NATO followed with over 26,000 air missions, among them almost 9,000 strike sorties, in Operation Unified Protector and the nation’s leader, Muammar Gaddafi, was brutally murdered outside his hometown of Sirte.
But as with NATO’s military operations from the Balkans to Afghanistan and the Horn of Africa, one armed conflict inevitably gives way to another and the Western military bloc continues to execute plans to expand into a global military strike force.

On the eleventh anniversary of the 9/11 murders of thousands by Muslim terrorists, the terrorists were at it again as two mobs in two Islamic countries attacked two American diplomatic facilities, killing at least one American and wounding another.
The Obama Administration’s reaction was to send a swift and clear message to the Muslim radicals rampaging through the streets of the newly “democratic” countries we helped create: We understand why you’re upset, and we’re sorry.
The excuse for the murderous attacks was a film by Sam Bacile, an Israeli-American real-estate developer who posted clips on YouTube. The film allegedly portrays Islam’s founder, Mohammed, as a child molester, womanizer and killer.
OK, reality check: According to historical sources, Mohammed married Aisha when she was 6 years old, and he started having sex with her when she was 9. Mohammed had several other wives as well. And he is recorded as having ordered hundreds of beheadings. I haven’t seen the film yet, but it sounds like Muslims are, yet again, upset at someone telling the truth about Mohammed.
Here is the statement issued by the Obama Administration in reaction to the Muslim attacks:
“The Embassy of the United States in Cairo condemns the continuing efforts by misguided individuals to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims – as we condemn efforts to offend believers of all religions. Today, the 11th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States, Americans are honoring our patriots and those who serve our nation as the fitting response to the enemies of democracy. Respect for religious beliefs is a cornerstone of American democracy. We firmly reject the actions by those who abuse the universal right of free speech to hurt the religious beliefs of others.”
GOP contender Mitt Romney sounded a whole lot more presidential:
“I’m outraged by the attacks on American diplomatic missions in Libya and Egypt and by the death of an American consulate worker in Benghazi. It’s disgraceful that the Obama Administration’s first response was not to condemn attacks on our diplomatic missions, but to sympathize with those who waged the attacks.”
The same day that we were being attacked, it was revealed that the administration is negotiating a deal to give the Muslim Brotherhood $1 billion for buying Russian submarines.
Officials are “wondering” if the attacks were coordinated. It seems pretty obvious they were, probably by that same Muslim Brotherhood our illustrious president thinks he has as a reliable ally in the Mideast.
If Obama wants to apologize, let him apologize for pretending to be a competent president.

Romney’s latest foreign policy flub began late Tuesday night, when he broke his own “no politics on September 11th” embargo to release a statement slamming President Barack Obama for alleged sympathy toward those who attacked the embassies in Cairo and Benghazi.
“It’s disgraceful that the Obama administration’s first response was not to condemn attacks on our diplomatic missions, but to sympathize with those who waged the attacks,” Romney said.
The problem, of course, is that President Obama did no such thing. The response to which Romney was referring — in which the U.S. Embassy in Cairo condemned “the continuing efforts by misguided individuals to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims — as we condemn efforts to offend believers of all religions” — was released several hours before the embassies were attacked. In other words, it was not a response at all.
Furthermore, on Tuesday night the White House distanced itself from the Cairo embassy’s statement — telling ABC News that “no one in Washington approved that statement before it was released and it doesn’t reflect the views of the U.S. government” — and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton issued a statement of her own, saying “let me be clear: There is never any justification for violent acts of this kind.”
On Wednesday morning, faced with the fact that his attack was absurdly misleading, Romney nevertheless chose to double down. 0 5 • Reply • Share › Avatar Wayne Peterkin • 29 minutes ago • parent
The embassy statement was very poor regardless of the timing when issued. Since each embassy represents our State Dept., they also represent the administration. It was a statement deriding free speech and American values; and therefore inexcusable. By the way, more recent reporting indicates that the attacks may have had nothing to do with that movie but had been planned for sometime to occur on 9/11. 1 • Reply • Share › Avatar T • 2 hours ago

We decided to enlighten her since she was really so stupid. Her brilliant retort was “Well! You need to keep your opinions to yourself!” Really? Very interesting comment on the radio this morning by a caller. Who is really to blame? The caller pointed out that the attackers were shouting ” We are a thousand bin Ladens Obama” This strongly suggests that the constant spiking of the football by the President, the DNC, Biden with his “bin Laden is dead GM is alive” bumper sticker, is the real reason for the violence and murders not the movie or Terry Jones. The rapid response by the left to blame Governor Romney, the movie and Terry Jones is once again irrefutable evidence that the mainstream media is totally in the tank for Obama and is typical of the Administration’s total refusal to take responsibility for anything that happens that does not support his presidency or the left agenda. 19 • Reply • Share › Avatar colleenf • 2 hours ago • parent

SOMEONE SHOOT ME!!……….Pleez………
Here we go again! Our Ambassador to Libya and 3 other embassy workers have been murdered, our embassy stormed, our flag destroyed and the Islamic flag raised on what is America soil!!
In Egypt, a similar scene, but thank God, without the loss of life.
Once again, the ”Religion of Peace” is proving it is neither. That these events took place on 911 is not lost to those of us who understand Islam. NOTHING is done without there being some connection to a past event in Islamic history. In fact, the 911 attacks on America were payback for something that happened in 1683,
In that year, 138,000 Muslims Ottoman Turks surrounded Vienna, Austria, which was defended by only 11,000 Hapsburg soldiers. For two months they starved Vienna’s troops.. Then the Polish King, Jan Sobieski, left his own country undefended and led a coalition of 81,000 Polish-Austiran-German forces to Vienna’s rescue…on SEPTEMBER 11, 1683 and within 30 minutes time, the battle was won.
The Battle of Vienna, a war between Muslims and Christians ended the 300 year continuous effort of Islam to conquer Europe. And so it was an apt date to loose the vengeance of allah on ”Christian” America in the greatest act of war in our history.
Yesterday’s attacks are also ACTS OF WAR and the government responds with an appeasing apology!!
Once more with feeling: THESE ARE ACTS OF WAR!!
Ironically, in May, the White House released a statement saying that the war on terror is over. That might come as a surprise to our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan and to all of our embassy officials in the MIddle East.
We need to IMMEDIATELY stop all transfers of money from our gov to Egypt. We need to IMMEDIATELY close both embassies and bring all Americans home. We need to IMMEDIATELY deport the Egyptian and Libyan Ambassadors and their staffs from the U.S. We need to IMMEDIATELY send ships to the area as a show of strength and in readiness to respond with force.
And MOST OF ALL….we MUST REMOVE OBAMA. HE’S KILLING US.
The thing that is most difficult to absorb is the people who will still vote and support this man who is ILLEGAL, and has had a FAILURE OF THIS ADMINISTRATION, and is determined to destroy this nation, and want 4 more years to finish it. If he doesn’t win watch what he will do between Nov. and Jan. He will try to take us down and I am afraid CONGRESS (Reid and Pelosi, ad infinitum) will help him do it! 24 • Reply • Share › Avatar gooseroot • 2 hours ago • parent

WHY the FOCK should WE give a Rat’s Rear End about “hurting the feelings” of Muslims – when THEY don’t give a Rat’s Rear End about MURDERING our embassador (and others)?!
WHERE are the (so-called) “Muslim Leaders” CONDEMNING the actions of “their” people?
Don’t tell ME we have to “understand” that MOST Muslims are “peace loving” people – when THEY are UNABLE (or unwilling) to IMMEDIATELY condemn the actions of their fellow Muslims (albeit the “Radical” wing thereof)!!!
What’s a SHAME, is you KNOW there would be IMMEDIATE CONDEMNATION (from Obama, the Democrats and the “Main Stream” Media) if some group of Christians (or Jews) were to “occupy” the Muslim “community center” near Ground Zero! 3 • Reply • Share › Avatar Screeminmeeme • an hour ago • parent
Mark Ward….Those of us with a brain who are not politically correct don’t give a rat’s behind about hurting their feelings.
PC is avoidance of the truth and it is killing America. We need to call Islam what it is: our enemy and the enemy of all non-muslims.
NO doubt about it….if Christians and Jews began acting like the Muslims, Obama would declare martial law and lock us all up.

Wayne Peterkin• 29 minutes ago • parent
The embassy statement was very poor regardless of the timing when issued. Since each embassy represents our State Dept., they also represent the administration. It was a statement deriding free speech and American values; and therefore inexcusable. By the way, more recent reporting indicates that the attacks may have had nothing to do with that movie but had been planned for sometime to occur on 9/11.

And any American would vote for this effin, lying, racist, illegal alien, non U.S. Citizen, Muslim P.O.S.?
Tiger716• 2 hours ago • parent
Oh yeah. There are a whole bunch of stupid sheeple out there who are going to vote for the jerk again. Ran into one today on the road. We had a bit of a verbal one-on-one. Apparently she didn’t like that I gave her the thumbs down to her Obama ’12 sticker and at a red light came up to us and asked what our problem was. We decided to enlighten her since she was really so stupid. Her brilliant retort was “Well! You need to keep your opinions to yourself!” Really? Some one correct me….is the 1st Amendment only for idiot liberals? I didn’t think so. She wasn’t too happy with our remarks but I think she got the message.
cowgirl20• 2 hours ago • parent
Excellent, keep up the good work. I have a couple of friends that are not registered to vote but keep complaining about odumbo….so far I have gotten one of them to register and I am working on the other one. I think I’m winning but It’s too early to tell. I am going to show him this article tomorrow and then take him for a drive to the court house to register.

I have 4 bumper stickers on the back of my car…one on the left that says “Don’t blame me, I didn’t vote for him!” and two on the right “How’s that whole hopey changy thing workin out for ya?” with a Big “Obummer” sticker below that. Of course a “MITT for President” sticker above in the middle. I am happy to say I have had more positive reaction than negative (1 hispanic) I have also been asked if I worry about some koolaide drinking liberal on the left vandalizing my car? No, I don’t. I believe this man is a danger to the United States I have grown up in and USED TO know. Also, It is worth the risk to protect my children and grandchildren’s future!

I was talking to 3 upper middle class white women who are all gaga over Obama and they just couldn’t believe that I felt the way I did. I said that I couldn’t understand how they felt because of the Muslim treatment of women and what Sharia law meant to women. Not a one of them had heard of Sharia law and didn’t believe what I was telling them. They kept saying he was a Christian and wouldn’t allow that stuff to happen.—–Go figure
cowgirl20• an hour ago • parent
I don’t understand how anyone can be gaga over odumbo, they must be braindead idiots. It only takes less than an ounce of brains to see what this muslim fraud is doing to America and Americans.
lolajmay• an hour ago • parent
It’s next to impossible to get through to liberals. They love to keep talking over any common sense words we give them. “Don’t give me any facts” is a perfect motto for them. Don’t know how many facts it would take for most of them to get the message that Obama wants to take this country down. For me, it only took listening to him the first time, and not believing anything he said!!

Obozo doesn’t believe in the goodness of this country. He hates traditional American values as all of the nutcases on the left do. Romney needs to show some spine and talk about how food and gas prices have gone up under Odumbo. How the American family has lost net worth under this administration. The Canadian Dollar is now worth more than the U.S. Dollar. We are also about to have our credit rating lowered again.

Screeminmeeme• an hour ago • parent
Mark Ward….Those of us with a brain who are not politically correct don’t give a rat’s behind about hurting their feelings.
PC is avoidance of the truth and it is killing America. We need to call Islam what it is: our enemy and the enemy of all non-muslims.
NO doubt about it….if Christians and Jews began acting like the Muslims, Obama would declare martial law and lock us all up.
Jack• an hour ago • parent
Let’s also get every muslim out of this country too, they are mandated to have 11 children it only a matter of time before they take over America, & with 11 children they collect welfare. Take a look at Detroit to see what can happen to the entire country

AND WHEN OBAMA HEARD ABOUT THE KILLING…SOMEONE WROTE SOMETHING FOR HIM TO SAY…nothing from the heart..JUST WHAT SOMEONE WROTE FOR HIM…MY GOD..IS OBAMA HUMAN??? HAVE ANY FEELING FOR THE DEAD??? HE HAS TO READ IT?????? WHAAAAAAA????
In 1990, Professor Justin McCarthy revealed the existence of a report, which he had discovered in the US National Archives, of a survey of eastern Anatolia in the summer of 1919 by two Americans, Emory Niles and Arthur Sutherland. Their account is one of the first descriptions of this region by outside observers after World War I. However, the document lacks a critical component, Niles and Sutherland’s field notes, which the authors emphasized should be read in conjunction with their report. McCarthy assumed that the missing information was lost, perhaps destroyed, but he surmised that if it ever came to light, it would surely enhance our understanding of the period. Niles and Sutherland’s field notes have not been destroyed, nor are they lost. Two identical copies exist in the archives of the former American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM) in Istanbul. This paper describes Niles and Sutherland’s mission to eastern Turkey and places it in historical context. It also speculates why the results of their investigation were probably ignored and eventually forgotten. A digital copy of their original field notes is appended. (A print version of this essay, without the notes, was published in The Journal of Turkish Studies, 34/2 (2010), 129–147.)
