In protest against U.K.’s support for Israel’s policies, dozens of students at Birzeit University heckle British consul-general and attack his car, preventing him from speaking on campus.

Dozens of Palestinian students at a West Bank university heckled a British diplomat and attacked his car on Tuesday, preventing him from speaking on campus.

British Consul-General Sir Vincent Fean was mobbed by students at Birzeit University who chanted and held banners protesting what they said was Britain’s support for the establishment of Israel and its policies.

Campus security guards shielded Fean from several dozen protesters as the diplomat, maintaining a slight smile, made his way to his car before being driven off unharmed.

Some of the students banged and kicked the vehicle, which had been covered in demonstrators’ placards.

Fean had been scheduled to meet students at the university, one of the West Bank’s most prominent schools, and discuss Britain’s Middle East policies.

“Sir Vincent had hoped to underline Britain’s deep commitment to the creation of a Palestinian state, and the urgency of progress on the peace process in 2013,” said a spokesman for the British Consulate-General in East Jerusalem. “Sadly, such a dialogue was not possible on this occasion.”

In a statement, Birzeit also voiced regret that Fean had not been able to speak.

  • Istanbul 2020 bid “encapsulates” exciting times for Turkey says British Sports Minister

Istanbul 2020 bid “encapsulates” exciting times for Turkey says British Sports Minister

    By Duncan Mackay

February 20 – If Istanbul’s bid to host the 2020 Olympics and Paralympics is successful then it can count on Britain’s support, Sports Minister Hugh Robertson has promised after leading a UK trade mission to Turkey’s financial capital.

Robertson, who was Olympics Minister when London 2012 hosted a Games widely-acclaimed as the best in history, headed a delegation of more than 20 companies, including Populous and British Telecom, seeking to work with Turkey as it continues to enhance its repuation as a leading host of major sports events.

“This milestone trade mission comes at a time when contact between Turkey and the UK has never been stronger,” said Robertson.

“These are extraordinarily exciting times for sport in Turkey.

“The Istanbul 2020 bid encapsulates this excitement, bringing together the city’s fantastic history in a country that showcases the best of Asia and the best of Europe.

“Therefore to have so much recent expertise from UK companies involved with London 2012 here in Turkey in one visit has been extremely valuable for both sides.

“Our experience in constructing and delivering great global events is at Turkey’s disposal.”

Robertson met with Turkey’s Sports Minister, Suat Kılıç, and International Olympic Committee (IOC) member and President of the National Olympic Committee of Turkey (NOCT) Uğur Erdener, in Ankara before flying to Istanbul to meet with the leader of the Istanbul 2020 Bid Committee, Hasan Arat.

British Sports Minister Hugh Robertson (right) meets his Turkish counterpart Suat Kılıç (left) during a visit where he led a UK trade delegation of more than 20 companies

“I attended the London 2012 Games which were of the highest standard.

“Turkey is also very ambitious to host major global sports events such as the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2020,” said Kılıç.

“Therefore it is appropriate that we should welcome Minister Robertson and the delegation of expert UK companies to discuss how Turkey and the UK could collaborate in the future.

“The meetings have been very productive and I believe both sides have learnt a great deal.”

Istanbul has hosted more than 40 major events over the last seven years, including 12 major events last year alone, such as the World Indoor Athletics Championships, the World Short Course Swimming Championships and the WTA Tour Championships,

“It is a great honour for Turkey to welcome this high-level UK trade delegation so soon after London 2012 which set a new benchmark of excellence for the Olympic and Paralympic Games,” said Arat (pictured top with Robertson).

“It has been invaluable for us to meet with Hugh Robertson and the UK companies and learn first hand from their experience as we make our final preparations for the IOC Evaluation Commission visit to Istanbul in five weeks.”

British companies will be hoping to cash in on the expertise gained from London 2012 whoever wins the right to host the 2020 Olympics and Paralympics when the IOC votes at its Session in Buenos Aires on September 7.

But Istanbul, which is currently undergoing a major upgrade of its infrastructure as part of a plan to celebrate Turkey’s centenary in 2023, offers more opportunities than rivals Madrid and Tokyo.

“This has been an important visit for Turkish sport,” said Erdener.

“There are representatives here from so many companies that made London 2012 successful.

“As Turkish sport is rising significantly on the world stage, I am sure that we can learn a tremendous amount from each other and enjoy many years of mutual cooperation.”

Award winning author Hilary Mantel has launched a scathing attack on the Duchess of Cambridge, describing her as “designed by committee”, in a lecture at the British Museum.

The 60-year-old author, who won the Man Booker Prize in 2009 and 2012, compared Kate to Anne Boleyn, Marie Antoinette and Princess Diana during the lecture entitled Undressing Anne Boleyn.

In it, she said: “It’s rather that I saw Kate becoming a jointed doll on which certain rags are hung.

“In those days she was a shop-window mannequin, with no personality of her own, entirely defined by what she wore.

“These days she is a mother-to-be, and draped in another set of threadbare attributions … her only point and purpose being to give birth.”

She also described the Duchess as having a “perfect plastic smile” and said her first official portrait, unveiled last month, revealed “her eyes are dead and she wears the strained smile of a woman who really wants to tell the painter to b***** off”.

The lecture for the London Review of Books was given on February 4, but the full version of her speech will be published in the latest edition of the review on Thursday.

Mantel, author of Thomas Cromwell novels Wolf Hall and Bring Up The Bodies, said Kate was not like Anne Boleyn who was a “power player, a clever and determined woman”.

It comes as the Duchess will show off her baby bump for the first time when she visits a project for women recovering from substance dependence.

The 31-year-old will visit Hope House, a project run by Action On Addiction of which she is a patron.

The engagement in Clapham will be the Duchess’ first solo engagement of 2013.

St James’ Palace has also announced the details of her next public engagement on March 5 when she will visit the Lincolnshire town of Grimsby.

Appeal to Turkish Justice Minister to end trial of God-denying pianist

fazilFebruary 17, 2013 by Norman Lebrecht

Fazil Say is due back in court tomorrow to face charges of religious defamation – blasphemy, in other words – for avowing his right to be an atheist on Twitter. The following letter has been posted tonight by British musicians and writers:

    Minister of Justice
    06669 Kizil
    Ankara
    Turkey

    17 February 2013

    Dear Minister

We are joining with English PEN to protest the charges against our fellow composer, musician and writer Fazıl Say.

On 18 February 2013, celebrated pianist, composer and writer Fazıl Say will appear in court for the second time for comments posted on the social networking service Twitter.

Say has been charged with religious defamation under Article 216/3 of the Turkish Penal Code in response to a series of messages posted on Twitter, including one which simply states ‘I am an atheist and I am proud to be able to say this so comfortably’. He has also been charged under Article 218 of the Turkish Penal Code, which increases sentences by half for offences committed ‘via press or broadcast’. Say denies the charges.

The charges are in violation of Say’s right to freedom of expression, as guaranteed by the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) to which Turkey is a signatory. Even those who are usually critical of Say have voiced concerns over this case, which they believe could be damaging to Turkey’s international reputation.

Say first appeared in court in Istanbul on 18 October 2012, where his lawyers demanded his immediate acquittal. The acquittal call was rejected and the case adjourned until 18 February 2013. He faces up to 18 months in prison if found guilty.

Fazıl Say is gravely concerned about the negative impact a prison sentence would have on his career as the country’s leading classical composer and an internationally renowned pianist. Furthermore, he has suggested that he would consider moving abroad as a result of the ‘growing culture of intolerance’ in Turkey.

As fellow composers, musicians and writers who cherish both creative freedom and the right to free expression we strongly urge you to drop all charges against Fazıl Say immediately and unconditionally.

    Yours sincerely
