UN Representative Calls For Establishing A ‘World Capital’–In Islamic Istanbul

    November 2, 2012

6118The world needs a global capital and it should be the capital of Islamic Turkey, Istanbul, according to a UN special representative. Richard Falk, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Palestinian human rights, wrote a Nov. 1, 2012, opinion piece for the controversial al Jazeera English site calling for a “global capital” because of integration “by markets, by globally constituted battlefields, by changing geopolitical patterns.”

While Turkey is a longstanding U.S. ally and a member of NATO, its nearly 80 million population is 99.8 percent Muslim, according to the CIA Factbook. Its Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has had several run-ins with Israel over access to Gaza. In March, he urged Israel to “stop the brutal attack against Palestinians and stop the massacre and bloodshed.”

The U.S. Embassy in Turkey sent out an “emergency message” for U.S. citizens in September warning of “a planned anti-American march/protest” in Istanbul. The march was tied to protests against the YouTube video claimed by critics to be anti-Islamic. “The Department of State strongly recommends avoiding the march/protest location as well as any other large crowds that may gather in Istanbul to protest against the controversial video that has created other demonstrations throughout the world,” explained the warning.

Falk recommended what al Jazeera called a “modest proposal” that should move the world past “the persisting tendency is to view the hierarchy of global cities from a West-centric perspective: London, New York, Paris, Los Angeles placed in the first rank.” Along with his UN duties, he is the Albert G. Milbank Professor Emeritus of International Law at Princeton University and Visiting Distinguished Professor in Global and International Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Falk said there were two sides on where to locate such a capital – hard and soft power dynamics. He defined hard power as a view “that history is principally made by those who prevail in warfare, and little else.”

His description of soft power included “culture, political vitality, religious identity and ethics shapes and forms what unfolds.” He listed “several factors” why to choose Istanbul. Those included the city as a tourist destination, it has “also become a secure and acceptable place to hold the most delicate diplomatic discussions,” it is convenient, and Turkey has “gained economic and political credibility at a time when so many important states have either been treading water so as to remain afloat.”

He credited Turkey for “achieving a stable interface between secular principles and religious freedom” and for “moving away from the ‘over-secularisation.’” Falk said choosing Istanbul as a world capital would be good because Turkey could provide the “satisfactions of a post-Western world civilisation.”

Turkey began to celebrate four-day Eid al-Adha holiday, or Feast of Sacrifice.

Besides Turkey; Macedonia and Albania began to celebrate Eid al-Adha today, while other Islamic countries will begin to celebrate on October 26, and Pakistan, India and Bangladesh on October 27 due to different calculating methods in Islamic calendar, or Hijri calendar.

Early in the morning, mosques were filled with people who performed their Eid al-Adha prayers, and celebrated their holiday.

President Abdullah Gul is celebrating the holiday in Ankara, while Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Istanbul.

Gul performed his prayer in Sungulu Mosque in capital, and celebrated the holiday with the people in the mosque.

Premier Erdogan, who performed his prayer in Mimar Sinan Mosque in Istanbul, expressed hope that the terrorism in Turkey and the violence in Syria would end soon and peace would prevail in the region.

Eid al-Adha or Feast of the Sacrifice is an important religious holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide to honor the willingness of Abraham to sacrifice his son Ishmael as an act of obedience to God, before God intervened to provide him with a sheep to sacrifice instead.

The basis for the Eid al-Adha comes from the 196th verse of sura 2 (Al-Baqara) of the Quran.

Eid al-Adha celebrations start after the Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia by Muslims worldwide, descent from Mount Arafat.

The meat from the sacrificed animal is divided into three parts. The family retains one third of the share; another third is given to relatives, friends and neighbors; and the other third is given to the poor and needy. The regular charitable practices of the Muslim community are demonstrated during Eid al-Adha by concerted efforts to see that no impoverished person is left without an opportunity to partake in the sacrificial meal during these days.

Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar consisting of 12 lunar months in a year of 354 or 355 days. Being a purely lunar calendar, it is not synchronized with the seasons. With an annual drift of 10 or 11 days, the seasonal relation repeats about every 33 Islamic years.

Istanbul 2020 bid gets boost from James Bond

    By Tom Degun

skyfall istanbulOctober 25 – Istanbul is set to receive a major boost in its bid to host the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games as the Turkish city provides a large part of the backdrop for the latest James Bond movie Skyfall.

Skyfall, which premiered in London this week, is the third Bond film to use Istanbul as a backdrop after From Russia With Love and The World Is Not Enough shot scenes in the city at locations including Maiden’s Tower.

Barbara Broccoli, the Bond film producer, has claimed that Istanbul was the favourite city of 007’s creator Ian Fleming, while the latest instalment of the franchise features some the its iconic landmarks, including the Blue Mosque, The Grand Bazaar and Eminönü Square.

“The film industry has always been enchanted with Istanbul, but a recent surge in blockbuster films being set here is evidence that Istanbul is an iconic global city – something which we hope to display to the Olympic family in the forthcoming months,” said Istanbul 2020 bid leader Hasan Arat.

“Istanbul is the perfect backdrop for James Bond films – which mix tradition and charm with state-of-the art innovation and technology.

“These Bond films perfectly reflect the duality of Istanbul – it would be the only city to host an Olympic Games situated in two continents; where East truly meets West; where historic culture and traditional customs meet a thriving, modern economic and commercial hub.

“Istanbul’s majestic visual backdrop, spanning millennia, cultures and continents, will create a defining experience for athletes and captivating images for a global audience.”

Daniel Craig (pictured top), who plays Bond in Skyfall, said Istanbul is “an incredible backdrop to any movie”, while rumours are growing that the English actor will be supporting the Istanbul 2020 bid in person at the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Session in Buenos Aires in September next year, when the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic host city will be decided.

When contacted by insidethegames about the possibility of Craig appearing at the IOC Session, the Istanbul 2020 bid team declined to comment, increasing speculation that it will happen.

Istanbul is currently bidding against Madrid in Spain and Tokyo in Japan for the right to stage the 2020 Games with the final decision set to be made by the IOC on September 7 2013.

Before the vote, all three cities will be visited in March next year by an IOC Evaluation Commission headed by Britain’s Sir Craig Reedie.

Istanbul’s inspection visit will come last on March 24-27.
