    About the Keynote Speaker

    Gizem Şalcıgil White has been a goodwill ambassador for Turkish coffee culture since 2009 and is the founder of the award-winning non-profit Turkish Coffee Truck initiative. She has been working voluntarily to promote Turkish coffee culture in the U.S. and abroad for the past 10 years. With the support from a dedicated volunteer team from American Turkish Association of DC (ATA-DC), the Turkish Coffee Truck initiative has been bridging cultures through coffee conversations since 2012. Through this cultural diplomacy initiative, more than 20,000 people in the U.S. and Europe was exposed to Turkish coffee for the first time. Gizem’s one-of-a-kind cultural diplomacy project made the headlines of major international publications including The Washington Post, Washingtonian, PRI/BBC and her fans started calling her the “Turkish Coffee Lady”. In 2015, she was honored as the one of the “Top Young Outstanding persons of Turkey” by JCI. Turk of America magazine also awarded her as one of “40 Under 40 – The Most Influential Turkish American” in March 2016. In 2017, she started the first and only authentic Turkish coffee chain in the U.S. with the support of her partners and her dedicated team.

    About the Documentary

    In December 2013, Turkish coffee was admitted to UNESCO’s World Heritage list as a “cultural inheritance that has to be protected.” Initiated by the Turkish Coffee Lady Foundation, the world’s first coffee diplomacy platform, the documentary is composed of special shootings featuring “dibek coffee” in Mardin, “mirra coffee” in Şanlıurfa, “menengiç coffee” in Gaziantep, “saffron coffee” in Karabük, “coffee brewed on ash” in Nevşehir, “coffee brewed on sand” in Ankara, “mastic coffee” in Izmir and “traditional coffee” in Istanbul.

    About the Guest Artists

    Hasan Kale is a world-renowned micro artist master who can turn tiny objects into minuscule paintings. Known as “Turkey’s Microangelo”, Kale’s exquisitely detailed paintings include pumpkin seeds, coffee beans, rice grains, chickpeas and tiny discarded items such as matchsticks to bottle caps. One of İstanbul’s most famous and talented artists, Hasan Kale’s showcasing some tiny masterpieces and unique designs will be shown from pre-recorded videos during the webinar.

    Atilla Can graduated from Atatürk University. He learned marbling art (Ebru) from Ali Çalışır at the Zal Mahmut Pasha Complex. He also learned marbling from Vedat Vaytaş. After five years, Can obtained his professional license in marbling. He organized and served as a president to establish the worldwide “Ebru Day.” He has participated in numerous group exhibitions and festivals in Turkey and abroad. He has received many awards for his work. Can continues his work in Istanbul.

    Remembering the 78th Anniversary of the Exile of Crimean Tatars

    On May 18, 1944, the Stalin regime carried out a mass deportation of Tatar Turks from their homelands which were occupied by the Soviet Union. Within months, 230,000 Crimean Tatars were deported, mostly to Uzbekistan. Many trekked to Japan from where they immigrated to the United States. Many sought refuge in Turkey where they flourished in freedom, equality, and safety.

    During the deportation, approximately 110,000 Tatars died from starvation, disease, and forced labor. The deportation was based on ethnic and religious hatred against the Tatars.

    78 years later, TASC remembers the Tatar Turks, who were torn from their homelands and brutalized at the hands of Stalin. We pray for their souls and express solidarity with the global Tatar diaspora.

    The 19th of May 1919 is an important holiday for Turks worldwide.
    One hundred three years ago, the Founder of the Turkish Republic, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, landed in the port city of Samsun on the Black Sea coast of Türkiye to launch the Turkish Independence Movement against Britain, Russia, France, Italy, and Greece which had invaded and brutally occupied the Turkish homeland during WWI.

    Atatürk rallied the people of Anatolia to fight in solidarity for independence. On July 24, 2023, the people declared victory, having ousted all invading forces, voided the racist Treaty of Sevres, and enacted the Treaty of Lausanne that defines the sovereignty and territory of Türkiye today.

    Thus began the transformation of Türkiye from a multi-religious theocracy to secularity, from a monarchy to democracy, and from a centralized to a free market economy.

    As a reminder that the future of the Republic of Türkiye is entrusted to the youth, the 19th of May was named, “Turkish Youth and Sports Day.” Atatürk lead the people to embrace the diversity of Anatolia in mutual respect and solidarity for independence and sovereignty. TASC is following in the same spirit and embraces ideals of inclusivity and is fully confident that our youth will carry on the noble legacy of progress at home and in the world.

    Turkish-Americans want civilized dialogue, not hostile polarization

    The highest court in Europe, the European Court of Human Rights, ruled on December 17, 2013 (Perincek v Switzerland) that the Armenian claim of genocide could not be compared to the Holocaust as it lacked concrete historical facts, clear legal basis, and the existence of “acts had been found by an international court to be clearly established…” (ECHR) doubted that there could be a general consensus “given that historical research was, by definition, open to discussion and a matter of debate, without necessarily giving rise to final conclusions.”

    Armenians, disappointed by this ruling and intent on giving the Turks a final blow, on the 100th anniversary of 1915 no less, appealed. This time the Grand Chamber of the ECHR took on the case and, after months of deliberations, ruled on October 15, 2015, that the alleged Armenian genocide is an opinion, not a court-proven fact.
    Moreover, since it is an unproven claim, an opinion, it can be criticized and rejected, and all that would be well within one’s right to free speech.

    The reason why ECHR decided that genocide was just an opinion, was because the honorable judges realized that the Armenian narrative lacked historical substantiation, as it ignored all Armenian revolts, Armenian terrorism, Armenian treason, Armenian territorial demands, and the Turkish deaths at the hands of Armenian insurgents since 1862 (53 years before 1915.) The Armenian narrative left half the story out and misrepresented the remaining half.

    A formidable array of prominent historians, scholars, researchers, and experts in the history of the Ottoman Empire also dispute the Armenian allegations of genocide. Here is what 69 of them said in a public statement that was published in the New York Times and Washington Post on May 19, 1985: “… As for the charge of ‘genocide’, no signatory of this statement wishes to minimize the scope of Armenian suffering. We are likewise cognizant that it cannot be viewed as separate from the suffering experienced by the Muslim inhabitants of the region. The weight of evidence so far uncovered points in the direction of serious inter-communal warfare perpetrated by Muslim and Christian irregular forces, complicated by disease, famine, suffering, and massacres in Anatolia and adjoining areas during the First World War. The resulting death toll among both Muslim and Christian communities of the region was immense. …”

    The final ruling by ECHR should have stopped all Armenian claims of genocide, but it did not. Instead, devoid of historical substantiation and rejected by international law, the well-funded Armenian lobby tried to circumvent history and law by using the media and politicians with ill-informed editorials and ill-intentioned resolutions that suffocated free speech.

    Playwright David Mamet’s recent comments on Bill Maher’s April 9, 2022, HBO program about free speech were significant: “When people with an opposing view are cancelled, we’re going to end up with a totalitarian state.” He lamented the impact of cancel culture on the future of America with these words: “… (T)he point is we have to have free speech…Without free speech, we have nothing because if one group takes the high road—it doesn’t matter which group it is—if they’re in power long enough, we’re going to have a police state. So…when people who state an opposing view are not disagreed with but are marginalized and canceled, we’re going to end up with a totalitarian state because that’s the way human nature works.”
