Prison Threat for Sports Journalist Uluç

Istanbul – BİA News Center 12 November 2010, Friday

The Istanbul Public Chief Prosecution prepared an indictment on journalist and writer Hıncal Uluç under charges of defamation according to Article 125 of the Turkish Criminal Court (TCK). Uluç is accused of alleged insult of Adnan Sezgin via the media. Adnan is sports director at the renowned Galatasaray football club.

Should the indictment be accepted by the Istanbul Magistrate Criminal Court, the journalist would face imprisonment of between three months and two years because of his article published in the “Photomatch” newspaper.

The charges are based on the article entitled “It has become a tradition” published in Uluç’s newspaper on 27 July 2010 and on his statements made in a television program.

The indictment was prepared by Istanbul Public Prosecutor İsmail Onaran. It puts forward that the contents of both the writing and the program were “far away from criticism” and constituted an “insult of the complainant”.

The article dealt with the fact that the Galataray football team was not able to win over its counterpart Fenerbahçe. It read, “Adnan Sezgin who was appointed as head of the team comes and goes with his BMW that was allocated to him by the club, he does not go by bus. Would the great Adnan Sezgin stoop to enter a bus…! He comes and goes with his 735 BMW. Who knows – we do not know whom he takes on a ride! […]”.

Additionally, Uluç said in a television program, “Everybody knows that Adnan Sezgin is not a Galatasaray fan. The entire Galatasaray community knows that Sezgin distributed the money against signatures, the so-called incentive premium, that came from the Istanbulspor football club to defeat Galataray”.

According to the indictment, Uluç said that he was not the only one who wrote about the money paid by Istanbulspor, that another newspaper reported about the incident in as well, that there has been almost no journalist left who did not write about the issue and that Adnan Sezgin had not declared the allegation to be false. Loew warns of ‘aggressive’ Turkey approach

BERLIN — Germany coach Joachim Loew warned Friday against the “aggressive” approach of the Turkish football federation in its efforts to recruit German-born and trained Turks to its national team.

lowAn estimated 3.5 million people of Turkish origin have made Germany their home, and as a result some have gone on to play for the national team.

Most recently, Real Madrid midfielder Mesut Ozil — who is of Turkish origin but was born and bred in Germany — opted to play for the German national side.

Now Loew admits the Turks are fighting back, but he said the German federation will be honest with players on their chances of making the national side.

“We know that the Turkish federation has an aggressive policy aimed at young players (of Turkish origin) who have been trained in Germany,” Loew said in German daily Bild Friday.

“We’re not going to put significant pressure on these players, but we will have an open and sincere dialogue with them and we won’t fill their heads with promises.”

The Turkish federation has its own offices in Germany, with a dedicated scout, former Bundesliga player Erdal Keser, who was recently instrumental in persuading Mehmet Ekici, a Germany under-21 player who is currently on loan at Nuremberg from Bayern Munich, to pledge his future to Turkey.

The same efforts are being made to persuade Omer Toprak, who helped Germany’s under-19 side to the European title, to jump ship and play for Turkey.

Loew would not say whether either player had a chance of playing for Germany’s senior side, but said: “I’m going to sit down and talk with this player (Toprak) and show him the kind of prospects he has with us.”

The general feeling in Germany is that Turkey is still riled by Ozil’s decision to play for Germany. The brothers Hamit and Halil Altintop, as well as Nuri Sahin — all of whom were born in the same Ruhr region as Ozil — opted to play for the country of their parents.

It has become a burning issue at the German football federation (DFB) — in the younger national teams there are more and more players of non-German origin. In Germany’s under-18 squad 10 of the 22 players are from immigrant families, and four of the 10 are of Turkish origin.

FIFA rules currently allow players a degree of liberty when representing countries below senior level. Once at senior level, the choice is however definitive.

Former World Cup winners Germany finished third at the 2010 event in South Africa last summer. Turkey have qualified for the World Cup only three times, reaching the semi-finals in 2002 and, after defeat to Brazil, beating South Korea in the match for third place.

Walter hits pedals to push point

Walter van Praag became world famous when he cycled from Paris to Istanbul in 2007, not just because he completed the gruelling cycle but because he did it despite having cystic fibrosis (CF).

His two-month journey was transformed into a book and a documentary and he was awarded the Order of Australia for his achievement which aimed to increase awareness of the debilitating disease.

Walter is back on his bike again and last week, pulled into the Tween Waters Caravan Park in Merimbula to enjoy a rest day during his latest challenge, cycling from Sydney to Melbourne.

Anticipation that Allen Iverson was headed to Istanbul grew for weeks. In true Iverson fashion, he was supposed to be there Saturday, to be greeted by throngs of people, to sign autographs, to be introduced to his new teammates with Besiktas. But he missed his flight, supposedly because he arrived at the airport without his passport. (Where, oh where, have we heard something like that before?) He is holding a 2-year contract worth $4 million, but the celebration was delayed until yesterday, when he was surrounded (mobbed?) by dozens of photographers and media members at Ataturk Airport, with giddy fans singing what seemed to be fight songs.

Allen Iverson start with Turkish basketball league delayed by 2 days

iverson istanbulISTANBUL — The Turkish basketball club Besiktas says former NBA star Allen Iverson’s arrival in Istanbul has been delayed by two days.

He was scheduled to arrive Saturday and meet fans before a game at Besiktas’s Cola Turka Arena.

Besiktas said in a statement posted on its website Friday that Iverson’s arrival had been pushed back because the 11-time NBA all-star and former scoring champion was not able to complete his preparations for the move on time.

Besiktas said Iverson would now arrive in Istanbul on Monday.

Iverson agreed to a US$4-million, two-year contract with Besiktas after no NBA team offered him a contract for the season.
