Gül’s meeting with Schmidt came amid a heated public debate on the government’s move requiring Internet users in Turkey to choose one of four content-filtering packages.

Under fire from international organizations for plans to filter Internet access, Turkey’s president praised the role the Internet played in the eruption of the Arab Spring that has shaken reigns of regional dictators.

“The Internet played an important role in the Arab Spring. It would not have been as easily developed in the absence of the Internet,” President Abdullah Gül told Eric Schmidt, the executive chairman of Google, according to information gathered from sources.

Gül’s meeting with Schmidt came amid a heated public debate on the government’s move requiring Internet users in Turkey to choose one of four content-filtering packages, which was considered a kind of censorship. Speaking to journalists Monday, Schmidt said he would tell Gül there would be no use in Internet filtering during his meeting with the president.

“I will talk about the importance of the Internet. I will say there would be no use in Internet filtering. I will explain to him that these kinds of restrictions are of no use. I will underline the fact that restrictions won’t work out, on the contrary it will solely harm Turkey’s image,” he told journalists who asked him what he may say to Gül. “There may be a good purpose behind these kinds of systems. Yet, if these systems do not remain transparent enough, they can be abused quite easily,” he said.

Recalling that the United States was also conservative but there was no such system like filtering, he said, “Turkey may apply an Internet waning system like in the U.S. and users may report non-ethical and inappropriate contents,” he said.

Recalling demand for censorship in China, Schmidt said censorship cannot be imposed effectively on the Internet and users find ways to break the bans eventually. “Although heavy penalties are imposed in China, people access Google. Censorship and restrictions are against the spirit of the Internet. No one can succeed in this sense.”

In response to Schmidt’s criticisms, Gül said he was sharing the Google chief’s views but stated that protection of children and families was equally important, which required every responsible institution to take necessary steps. Underlining that he was always pro-freedoms when it comes to Internet regulations, Gül said: “However, necessary measures should be taken to preserve the family and children as well as personal rights. In this sense, your role is also important. If you do not take measures to stop such abuses, then the state intervenes to do so.”

Recalling some videos violating his personal rights released by the Youtube in the past, Gül urged those who are controlling and guiding the Internet to take precautions to protect the rights of the people. The president also asked Schmidt to reinforce Google’s office in Turkey, a country where more than 25 million of its people has a page on Facebook.

The team members are Konstantin Borisov, North Allegheny Senior High School, Wexford, Pa.; Tayyab Shah, Vestal High School, Vestal, N.Y.; Elmer Tan, John P. Stevens High School, Edison, N.J.; and Joe Tung, Gretchen A. Whitney High School, Cerritos, Calif. If any team member is unable to go, Kevin Yan of Thomas S. Wootton High School, Rockville, Md., and Sriram Pendyala of Mira Loma High School, Sacramento, Calif., are the alternates.

The team was assembled on June 14 at the conclusion of an intensive two-week U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad study camp organized by the American Chemical Society and held at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. The 20 students who participated in the camp were selected from a pool of approximately 10,000 students from around the country.

Team mentor Kris Fletcher, a senior chemist at Chromatic Technologies, says the four students chosen for the U.S. team “not only demonstrated extraordinary understanding of the material tested as well as exemplary lab skills, but they also showed a level of maturity, respect, and responsibility we think are required to be good ambassadors of the U.S. at IChO.”

Turkey ready to produce first national fighter jet

The Defense Industry Executive Committee (SSİK) has taken the first step towards producing Turkey’s first national fighter jet by launching feasibility studies.

According to a Defense Ministry source that remained anonymous, the SSİK had met with Chief of General Staff Gen. Işık Koşaner and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in December 2010 when they took the decision to produce the Turkish fighter jet and to complete it by 2023, the centennial of the Turkish Republic, and had started feasibility studies for the fighter jet. The source stated that this study includes how much the fighter jet will cost, which mechanical and electronic systems will be used, and the opportunities and threats on the market.

The Turkish Air Forces (THK) currently has McDonnell Douglas F-4s and F-16 Fighting Falcons in its jet fighter inventory. However, these planes will be changed to F-35 from the American aviation company Lockheed Martin in the next couple of years. Since fighter jets require high-technology software to be operated, companies are not willing to share the codes of these planes, making the owner of these fighters jets dependant on the company. Turkey, however, wants to decrease its dependency on high-tech foreign defense industries by producing its own products such as its own fighter jet.

Meanwhile, Turkey’s first observation satellite RASAT was sent to Russia on Wednesday for its launch into space. It is expected that RASAT, designed and manufactured in Turkey by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK) and supported by the State Planning Organization (DPT), is expected to be launched in July from a space station in Russia. Satellite photos from the Turkish observation satellite will be used in city planning, forestry, agriculture and disaster management.

China will launch Turkey’s first intelligence satellite, Göktürk-2, for $20 million since Turkey lacks the required technology to launch the satellite. Göktürk-2, which will be capable of detecting the movements of objects smaller than even one square meter, will help capture terrorists infiltrating Turkish borders.

The optical camera for the satellite has been bought from South Korea, while all the other parts have been produced and manufactured in Turkey. Göktürk is expected to be launched in December or in early 2012.

The Göktürk satellite will also be used for monitoring civilian activities such as control of forestland, tracking illegal construction, rapid assessment of damage after natural disasters, determination of agricultural boundaries and geographical data gathering. The project also aims to furnish national industries with the capability to design and integrate satellite systems and run tests on them here in Turkey.

Turkish defense industry companies and research centers Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI), Aselsan, the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK) and Turksat will participate in all phases of the project. The project consists of the construction of an electro-optic satellite system that will be put into orbit, a fixed land station and a mobile land station.

However, it is said that Israel is trying to block the launch of Göktürk-2, fearing that Turkey will be able to monitor Israel’s territory.
