America cannot forget about its most important ally

This week, American leaders watched as Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan met in Istanbul for the third time since June, this time in bilateral talks on the sidelines of the 2016 World Energy Congress in Istanbul.

During Putin’s visit, both leaders agreed to revive the Turkish Stream, a natural-gas pipeline project intended to replace a pipeline through Bulgaria that was previously planned, but subsequently blocked by the European Union at the outset of the Ukraine crisis. The agreement would allow Russian gas to reach Western markets without using Russia’s existing export pipelines throughout the Eastern European region. While various European governments, as well as the United States, oppose the Turkish Stream pipeline, President Erdogan supports it, particularly as a means of propping Turkey up as gas hub for Europe and the region.

Turkey and Russia, brought together by their mutual interests, their geographic proximity, and, recently, their disputes with the United States, are now working more closely together than they have in years. As Turkey increases cooperation with one of America’s biggest geopolitical threats, it is more important than ever for the United States to pay new attention to Turkey.Turkey is crucial to global operations against ISIS, controls the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s (NATO) second-largest army, and remains a central player in any proposed solution to the Syrian conflict. It is an ally of both the United States and key Arab nations in supporting moderate rebels’ attempts to establish a political transition in Syria without President Bashar al-Assad.

However, the U.S. and Turkey are at a standstill when it comes to the Kurdish issue. President Erdogan labels the YPG in Syria as terrorists and a national security threat, while Washington sees them as the main ground force and an integral part in the fight against ISIS. To make matters trickier, unlike Russia and the United States, Turkey believes in establishing a no-fly zone along its border with Syria, to be eventually used as a protected area to settle millions of refugees.

Turkey is indeed an ally of the West, but friends and allies may not agree on every issue. Given the stakes, it is necessary to ensure that our ally is treated the way it deserves to be treated. As Russia and Turkey, despite their differences, continue to cooperate, America must also assist its ally and support its efforts to maintain a stable government without any additional coups. In the face of the biggest challenges on the global stage, we must eliminate the cracks that exist in the U.S.-Turkey relationships as soon as possible in order to reach our common goals. Turkey is America’s most important ally in the fight against ISIS and terrorism in the 21st century.

Following the July 15 coup attempt, 93,000 civil servants were suspended from their duties in many of Turkey’s public institutions; investigations are ongoing for 40,000 of them. The key question now is who will fill those vacancies, especially in the military and intelligence bureaucracies.

One hard reality is that the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), despite its 14 years in power, has not developed a senior bureaucratic team that deals with security and intelligence affairs. Hence, a power struggle was inevitable at the senior echelons of the National Intelligence Service (MIT), the Gendarmerie Command, the Ministry of Defense and the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK), where two distinct schools of thought or cliques are competing to fill the vacancies.

There is widespread dissatisfaction and mistrust among the American public toward the two main presidential candidates: Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. Armenian-Americans likewise are negatively disposed toward these candidates. More specifically, on Armenian issues Mrs. Clinton has shown that she cannot be trusted, while Donald Trump’s position is unknown.

Strangely, neither Clinton nor Trump has made any effort to win over Armenian-American voters, despite the close presidential race. The two candidates have not attended any Armenian events, held no meetings with members of the community, nor sought to raise any funds from them. It is preferable that presidential candidates make no promises that they do not intend to keep, thereby deterring Armenian-Americans from wasting their money and votes, and after the election, saving them from much aggravation and disappointment.

Of course, everyone is free to vote for the candidate of his or her choice. One is also free to vote for third party candidates or not to vote at all.

While Presidential candidates are constantly covered by the media, there are many local and state elections that hardly make the news. For example, there are 435 Members of Congress and a third of the 100 U.S. Senators who are up for election or reelection on November 8.

As opposed to White House candidates who may or may not support Armenian issues after the election, most House and Senate members have already served in Congress for several years and therefore, their positions on Armenian issues are well-known. Thus, voting for them is not a guessing game! They have a proven track record — positive, negative or in between.

Below is the list of only those House and Senate members who have received either an excellent (A) or extremely bad (F) grade from the Armenian National Committee of America after a thorough review of their positions on a broad range of Armenian-American issues in the last two years. Those who have earned the grade A deserve the Armenian community’s support. Those who have an F after their names have had a very negative position on Armenian causes, and therefore, should not be supported. The letters D and R denote Democrat or Republican. Masked men robbed U.S. reality TV star Kim Kardashian West at gunpoint in a luxury residence Paris early on Monday, stealing jewellery worth millions of dollars, police and her publicist said.

According to Reuters five attackers struck around 3 a.m. (0100 GMT) inside the block used by celebrities and wealthy individuals behind the city’s Madeleine church, a police source told Reuters.

The attackers were wearing ski masks and jackets with police signs. Kardashian had been locked in the bathroom and tied up, the source said.

The men stole a jewellery box with five to six million euros worth of jewels and a ring worth about four million euros, the source said.

Police were guarding the site on Monday morning.

Kardashian West’s husband, rapper Kanye West, abruptly ended a performance in New York less than an hour into his set, as news of the robbery spread.

“I’m sorry I have a family emergency, I have to stop the show,” West said in video footage posted on Twitter by fans at the Meadows Festival in the city’s borough of Queens.

Kardashian West’s spokeswoman, Ina Treciokas, had earlier said two masked gunmen dressed as policemen held up the star in her room. “She is badly shaken but physically unharmed,” Treciokas said.

Kardashian West was in Paris for Fashion Week and had attended shows at Balmain and at Balenciaga.

The TV star is one of the most popular celebrities on Instagram, with 85 million followers. A regular fixture at Paris Fashion Week, she is a close friend of designer Olivier Rousteing at Balmain.

She has stayed in the residence at least once before, in 2014, before her marriage to rapper Kanye West.

Kardashian, who rose to fame along with her sisters, mother Kris and other family members on the reality television program “Keeping Up With the Kardashians,” parlayed the exposure from the show into an empire spanning the worlds of fashion and entertainment.

Her marriage to West, with whom she has two small children, increased the couple’s dominance of tabloid, gossip and day-to-day headlines in the United States and abroad.

But they have also drawn criticism for their seemingly limitless appetite for fame, and social media users wasted no time in posting messages on Twitter making light of the robbery.

Most comments, however, were supportive. “Kim Kardashian is a mother, a wife, daughter and sister. Despite the fact that you don’t like her, being held up at gunpoint is not funny,” said one post by Alieuisha.

Kardashian first rose to fame as a friend and stylist to Paris Hilton. She later appeared in her own reality programme, Keeping up with the Kardashians, about her family.*

UK Brexit: PM Theresa May to trigger Article 50 by end of March

theresa-may_01Theresa May will formally begin the Brexit process by the end of March 2017, she has told the BBC.

The PM’s announcement on triggering Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty – which begins the formal negotiation process – means the UK looks set to leave the EU by the summer of 2019.

Mrs. May also promised a bill to remove the European Communities Act 1972 from the statute book.

She said this would make the UK an “independent, sovereign nation”.

The repeal of the 1972 Act will not take effect until the UK leaves the EU under Article 50.

It will be contained in a “Great Repeal Bill”, promised in the next Queen’s Speech, which will also enshrine all existing EU law into British law.

This will allow the government to seek to keep, amend or cancel any legislation once Brexit has been completed. The repeal bill will also end the jurisdiction of the European Court of Justice in the UK.

    • Article 50: A simple explanation

Brexit campaigners have been calling for Article 50 – which begins a two-year negotiation process – to be triggered as soon as possible.

Mrs. May, who had previously only said she would not trigger it this year, will be making a speech on Brexit later to the Conservative conference, which is getting under way in Birmingham.

Speaking on the Andrew Marr Show, she ended speculation about the government’s timetable, saying this would be done by “the first quarter of 2017”.

    ‘Not hanging around’

Mrs. May said the process of leaving would be “quite complex” but said she hoped there would now be “preparatory work” with the remaining EU members so that “once the trigger comes we will have a smoother process of negotiation”.

She added: “It’s not just important for the UK, but important for Europe as a whole that we’re able to do this in the best possible way so we have the least disruption for businesses, and when we leave the EU we have a smooth transition from the EU.”

The PM also said June’s vote to leave the EU was a “clear message from the British people that they want us to control the movement of people coming into the UK”.

BREAKING NEWS UK: Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe, 58, is to retire after five years as Met Police Commissioner

    • sir-bernard-hogan-howeHe became commissioner after spells in South Yorkshire and Merseyside
    • His time at Scotland Yard has been hit by a number of controversies
    • He will leave the post until February when a successor is found

According to Daily Mail, the Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe, is to retire after five years in the job.

The 58-year-old will stay in his post until February 2017 to allow the Home Secretary and the Mayor of London to appoint a successor.

Sir Bernard’s five-year contract was due to expire this month and he is understood to have previously clashed with Prime Minister Theresa May, who was Home Secretary for nearly all of his time at Scotland Yard, over a number of high-profile issues.

In a statement released this morning, Sir Bernard said: ‘I wish my successor well as they take on this amazing responsibility.

‘It has been a great privilege to be the Met’s Commissioner. I have loved my time in the role and I have loved being a police officer.

‘It’s the most rewarding of jobs to protect good people and lock up the bad guys.’

Sir Bernard is credited with having played a pivotal role in tackling terrorism, but his tenure has also been dogged by a number of controversies.

There was fury over his refusal to apologise to ‘hounded’ 92-year-old war hero Lord Bramall over the unravelling VIP abuse investigation, Operation Midland.

The £2million investigation was based on evidence from one witness ‘Nick’, whose own family have said is a ‘fantasist’.

The announcement of his retirement comes just days before his force are expected to be criticised in a report into the operation by retired judge Sir Richard Henriques.

Meanwhile, Scotland Yard’s controversial inquiry into alleged payments to public officials by journalists, the £20million Operation Elveden, led to just two journalists being convicted, one of whom is appealing.

Recently-appointed Home Secretary Amber Rudd thanked Sir Bernard today, saying: ‘Sir Bernard has had a long and distinguished career as a determined crimefighter and an inspirational senior officer. He has shown remarkable and consistent dedication to public service.

‘Among his many achievements in London was the delivery of a safe and successful 2012 Olympics.

‘I am grateful to Sir Bernard for his dedication and support, and look forward to working closely with him until his retirement next year.’
