Pink Floyd duo outshine Kate Moss at Palestine charity gig

It is not often that Kate Moss finds herself upstaged. But the supermodel’s enthusiastic turn on the tambourine was overshadowed by a rare reunion of Pink Floyd legendsDavid Gilmour and Roger Waters.

They took to the stage at the Hoping For Palestine charity gala, where guests bid at an auction throughout the night to raise money for Palestinian refugee children.

Held at Jemima Khan‘s country house Kiddington Hall at the weekend, the Pink Floyd duo performed To Know Him Is To Love Him, Wish You Were Here and Comfortably Numb. Financier Arpad Busson then bid £50,000 for them to play Another Brick In The Wall.

The evening began when Nick Cave and Jamie Hince sang Stagger Lee, with Moss and Cave’s wife Susie Bick on tambourines.

The evening was orchestrated by the Hoping Foundation’s trustees Bella Freud, Karma Nabulsi, James Fox and Sudhir Hazareesingh and raised £400,000. Guests included Guy Ritchie and new girlfriend Jacqui Ainsley, Fearne Cotton, Dougray Scott, Harry Potterdirector Alfonso Cuarón and Sheherazade Goldsmith.

  • After Canceling Concert, Lopez Faces Possible Suit

After Canceling Concert, Lopez Faces Possible Suit

A hotel in Cyprus said it might sue Jennifer Lopez, below, after the singer withdrew from a scheduled concert for fear that it would be construed as making a political statement, Agence France-Presse reported. Ms. Lopez was to perform at the Cratos Premium hotel and casino complex in Turkish-occupied northern Cyprus on July 24, an event that Greek Cypriots have said would further polarize the country, which has been divided since the 1970s and whose northern region is recognized only by Turkey. Ms. Lopez’s representatives said last week that she would not perform the concert, citing “sensitivity to the political realities of the region.” But Murat Bozoglu, chief executive of the company that runs Cratos Premium, told Agence France-Presse that Ms. Lopez’s contract for the show had not been canceled. “If she does not show up for the concert, we will begin a procedure in the courts to claim $35 to $40 million in damages,” Mr. Bozoglu said.

  • Cypriot Hotel Threatens To Sue J.Lo For $40m

Cypriot Hotel Threatens To Sue J.Lo For $40m

A luxury hotel in northern Cyprus has threatened to sue pop star Jennifer Lopez for $40m (£27m) after she cancelled a gig there for “political” reasons.

But newspapers in the Turkish-occupied territory said the hotel owner has offered J.Lo an olive branch, saying there is still time to reverse her decision.

The singer had been due to perform on July 24 at the Cratos Premium hotel and casino complex – but the booking outraged Greek Cypriots in the south of the island nation.

They claimed that performing in the disputed north would be tantamount to making a political statement and the singer was deluged with thousands of letters of protest.

A Facebook site against the concert signed up almost 20,000 members within a week.

In backing out of the concert, a spokesperson for J.Lo told celebrity gossip website TMZ: “Jennifer Lopez would never knowingly support any state, country, institution or regime that was associated with any form of human rights abuse.

“After a full review of the relevant circumstances in Cyprus, it was the decision of management to withdraw from the appearance. This was a team decision that reflects our sensitivity to the political realities of the region.”

Yet Feza Firat, whose Istanbul-based F&F Agency represents the Cratos hotel, claims Lopez had been “led to believe there was a war going on”.

Mr Firat went on to say the singer’s fee had already been paid.

The US-based American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association claimed the concert would “lend credence to an illegal entity recognised only by Turkey”.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey occupied the north to try and stop Nicosia uniting with Greece.

The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is only recognised by Turkey and has been a significant political barrier to Turkey being allowed to join the EU.

  • THE SILENT BOYCOTT AGAINST ISRAEL

    THE SILENT BOYCOTT AGAINST ISRAEL

Here’s a report that most likely won’t be written about in the Western press…..

Ryan and Hoffman are not the only high-profile names to decline participation in this year’s festival.

Prince Albert of Monaco, son of legendary actress Grace Kelly, was also slated to attend.

Meg Ryan, Dustin Hoffman snub J’lem Festival after ‘Mavi Marmara.’

Hollywood actors Meg Ryan and Dustin Hoffman backed out of attending this year’s annual Jerusalem Film Festival, which is set to kick off this coming Thursday, following the international outcry over Israel’s attack on a Turkish-led flotilla that attempted to break the Gaza blockade on May 31, The Jerusalem Post learned Monday.

According to Cinematheque associate director Yigal Molad Hayo, while neither gave the political climate as a direct reason for canceling their participation in the festival, “it became quite clear that this was the reason,” he said.

“Meg Ryan was supposed to come here, it had all been closed with her people,” said Molad Hayo, adding “a day after the flotilla incident we got an email saying she was not going to attend, and although they claimed it was because she was too busy, it was clear to me that it probably had something to do with what had happened.”

In addition to Ryan, who has starred in such movies as Sleepless in Seattle, When Harry Met Sally and, more recently, Kate and Leopold, Molad Hayo said that the Cinematheque had also reached “advanced negotiations” with Jewish actor Dustin Hoffman.

“We were very close to reaching an agreement with him, then the flotilla happened and correspondence was ended,” said Molad Hayo.

Ryan and Hoffman are not the only high-profile names to decline participation in this year’s festival.

Prince Albert of Monaco, son of legendary actress Grace Kelly, was also slated to attend.

“I’d already made arrangements for a tribute to Grace Kelly to appear in the festival program,” said Molad Hayo, adding that he believed Prince Albert’s cancellation could have come from pressure in his own country not to make an official visit to Israel at this time.

“I think they believed it could have been very negative for him and even dangerous,” he said.

“Many people from the Gulf States have their bank accounts in Monte Carlo and they might not have approved of him coming to a festival in west Jerusalem.”

“Sadly, even though we are a well-known event, it is obvious that the State of Israel has more influence than we do,” continued Molad Hayo, adding “many people are swayed by the political situation.”

Despite the obvious boycotting by high-profile guests, this year’s festival will still bring in some 150 official guests from all over the world, including heads of other international festivals, actors, producers and directors. It will also debut roughly 50 homegrown movies, documentaries and short films.

“Our guests this year might not be as famous as Dustin Hoffman, but there will be some well-known producers and directors,” said Molad Hayo. “Many of those attending took it upon themselves to pay their own way. This, to me, is very impressive and a compliment to the festival.”

He added that the festival, as in past years, will continue to provide an avenue for coexistence between Israeli and Palestinian filmmakers, and a delegation from the Cinematheque in Ramallah will attend.

“We are well known for encouraging cooperation between Palestinian and Israelis in the area of film,” said Molad Hayo.

More than 70,000 people are expected at the two-week event, which will take place at the Cinematheque and at various other locations around the capital.

  • Thomas Friedman of the New York Times in İstanbul, June 15,2010

Thomas Friedman of the New York Times in İstanbul, June 15,2010

Thomas Friedman, the three time Pulitzer prize winner, author of many books, reseracher and a columnist at the New York Times, spoke to over 600 people at Fuji Ballroom, Bosphorous Swiss Hotel on June 15, Tuesday. The topic was his latest book ‘’Hot, Flat and Crowded.’’ The audience included students from Ozyegin University, members of Turkish universities, ordinary folks and media representatives. The occasion was the introduction of Ozyegin University’s ‘’Research@Ozyegin’’ program. Mr. Husnu Ozyegin, the founder of  the new Ozyegin University and the great Turkish writer Yasar Kemal and his wife were among the many dignitaries. Yasar Kemal stated that he came to listen to what Friedman had to say.

Prof. Erhan Erkut, the Rector of Oztegin University spoke first and presented information about the university which opened its doors last year. Many of its teaching staff have been recruited from foreign universities, 60 % of them from the top 100 universities, boasting on reverese brain drain. The university has several research centers, including Center for Energy, Envirenment, and Economy. Prof. Dr. Sirin Tekinay, the Asst. Rector, introduced Thomas Friedman, who s considered as the most widely read columnist in the world.

Friedman presented ideas from his book which covers many subjects but the trust was green energy and natural resources. Friedman made references to America’s share in energy, which he said is the highest in the world, with usage of over 25% although its population is only 300 million. He said that everyone in the world wants to live like Americans, prompting a remark that God did not create the world fort this many Americans.

Friedman discussed five issues, presented on the video screen:

    1. Energy and Natural Resources
    2. Petrodictatorship
    3. Climate Change
    4. Energy Poverty
    5. Biodiversity Loss

He told us that many people in the world now have a higher living standard which requires more and more of everything. The population of the world which was 1.8 billion in 1830 has increased to 6.3 billion now and is expected to reach 9.2 billion by 2050. He described the developments over the years with a graph, one showing the price of oil and the other significant world events. In 1997, when the price of oil wass a little over $16 a barrel, Hatemi of Iran called for Dialogue of Civilisation. In 2005, when the oil price increased, Iran called for he destruction of Israel. Friedman also commented that he is worried about America.

Friedman spoke for over one and a half hour, with dramatic gestures and many anecdotes. Several people asked questions which Friedman answered. If there would have been enoght time, I would have told him about Stephen Kinzer and asked him if he thought that America or Israel would bomb Iran someday, since this is the hottest subject now.

Mr. Stephen Kinzer, Eat Your Heart Out

Just about the same time that Friedman was reading passages from his book, Stephen Kinzer, the former head of the NY Times Bureau in İstanbul from 2000 to2004, was introducing his latest book  to Turkish – Americans in Washington DC. The book, Reset: Iran, Turkey, and America’s Future’’ has been released on June 8, 2010 by Times Book. There was a huge crowd in front of the Fuji ballroom where close to a thousand copies of Friedman’s books, both in English and Turkish, were on sale, Friedman happily signing them both before and after his presentation. I saw one young man walk away with four of his books. Stephen Kinzer comes to İstanbul often and makes presentations, with probably one in the works for presenting his latest book,

During a brief chat afer the presentation, I asked Friedman if he had been to Turkey before. He said, ‘’Yes many times’’ but the last time was in 2005.  He added that he loved Turkey. The presentation was strictly on his book without any reference to the Palestine issue, the Gazze Tragedy or the nuclear issue with Iran which he wrote about in his article, ‘’As Ugly as It Gets’’, referring to the May 17 picture of Iran’s president joining Brazilian counterpart Luiz Inacio Lula de Silva and the Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayip Erdogan.

Ozyegin University is to be commended for an interesting presentation.
