Google-Backed Report Says Turkey’s Online Business Will Surge

Turkey’s Internet economy will probably grow at 19 percent a year until 2017 as Turkish companies embrace Web-based business, according to a report sponsored by Google Inc. (GOOG)

Turkey’s Internet economy will grow to 2.6 percent of gross domestic product, or 64.3 billion liras ($35.7 billion), by 2017 from 1.7 percent and 22 billion liras in 2011, Boston Consulting Group Inc. said in the report. In 2011, Turkish consumers spent about 8.8 billion liras on Internet access and charges, and more than 4.4 billion liras on e-commerce.

“Consumption is expected to be the largest driver of growth, primarily through an increase in e-commerce following a rise in broadband and Internet user penetration,” according to the report.

In a more optimistic case, with broadband penetration and smartphone retailing at the upper end of expectations, the figure in 2017 may reach 76.4 billion liras, or 3 percent of GDP, similar to current levels in Germany or France, according to the report. About 47 percent of people in Turkey use the Internet, less than the European Union level of 71 percent, the report showed.

7 firms pledge $3.2 million for Istanbul Olympics bid

Ankara (Turkey), March 10 (IANS) Seven of Turkey’s leading conglomerates have pledged to contribute to the bid to bring the 2020 Summer Olympics to the Turkish city of Istanbul, with sponsorship deals worth $3.2 million.

An earlier meeting in Berlin in January resulted in seven firms, including Turkish Airlines, Koc Holding, Ulker, Dogus Group, Digiturk, Sabanci Holding and Turkcell, pledging investments as high as $20 million to sponsor the games, reports Xinhua.

Sports Minister Suat Kilic has announced the deals alongside representatives from the seven companies in Istanbul, saying, “Before our sponsors became involved in the process, we felt all alone. When they decided to provide their support, we realized we were one big family.”

The minister said the seven firms will put up $3.2 million in sponsorships, an amount which he said represented “50 percent of the burden”.

Istanbul is competing in the final three with Madrid and Tokyo for the right to host the 2020 Summer Olympics. This is the fifth bid Turkey has made in the last six selections. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) will elect the host city in a vote in September in Buenos Aires.

The sexy Istanbul-based line, helmed by sisters Zeynep and Ayca Sadikoglu, is practically guaranteed to turn heads with plenty of low necklines and sheer mesh inserts. After previewing the steamy styles, ELLE.com got some exclusive scoop from Ayca, the designing power to her sister’s business brain.

    On the sexiest swimsuit cut:
“It all lies in the attitude of the wearer. When a women feels confident and sexy, it doesn’t matter whether she’s in a one-piece or a bikini. It’s the person who makes the garment sexy. I like encouraging women to explore different styles and discover the one she can’t live without.

For this collection, I was keen to explore new silhouettes for the one-piece. There’s more space to be creative [than with a bikini].”

    On the power of black:
“Black is the new black as far as I’m concerned. It’s understated, sexy, effortless, chic, and sophisticated. I’ve just always been into it. I also love white, but I’ve found it’s really difficult commercially. I’ve never been a big fan of using a lot of color, but it’s time for me to get out of my comfort zone. I’m definitely thinking crazy metallics for 2014.”

On adapting super-sexy suits for the American consumer:
“Our customer is pretty fearless when it comes to fashion, and she loves to take risks when it comes to her sartorial choices. That’s the common thread between all women attracted to OYE. She’s daring, dynamic, and multi-faceted. In terms of altering designs for the U.S. market, a few subtle modifications were made to several of the more risque styles in the collection, including the Bane and Shaw one-pieces. The commercial versions offer a bit more coverage. On that note, it’s been great to work with the buying team at Neiman Marcus. Their deep knowledge of the American consumer has helped us as we translate the brand from the European to the [American] market.”

Pieces will be available to shop on neimanmarcus.com starting in mid-April, with prices starting at $295.
