Subject: Congratulation on your rightful and courageous action

    Madam/Sir,

All my congratulations for your courage, because you filed a complaint against the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA). It is time for legal procedures against the violations of law by the Armenian Revolutionary Federation, in USA and elsewhere.

From 1972 to 1986, the ARF had a terrorist branch, the JCAG/ARA which committeed several attacks the US territory, including assassinations:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-a1c_5APvto

Mourad Topalian, president of the ANCA from 1991 to 1999, currently in charge of political financing, was sentenced, in 2001, to 37 months of jail for storing illegal explosives and owning two machine guns, i.e. complicity with the terrorist dashnak group:

Despite this sentence, Mr. Topalian was fully supported, and even awarded, by the ANCA, during and after the investigation and trial.

The ARF terrorists received financial from drug smugglers, like Noubar Soufoyon. See Michael M. Gunter, “Pursuing the Just Cause of their People”. A Study of Contemporary Armenian Terrorism, Westport-New York-London, Greenwood Press, 1986, pp. 75-76.

Both before and after 1986, supporters of ANCA attacked physically Turkish American associations and friends of Turkey. For example:

The fanatic activists of the ARF/ANCA will perhaps attempt to intimidate you by insisting that they are doing the right things for their race… what ever is their excuse… it was proven at historical and legal circles that  Armenia is a terrorist state controlled by Armenian diaspora located in USA. They are afraid of opening ARF archives which goes over 100 years and located in Boston. Some of The facts as we Turkish Americans and the friends of Turkey see are documented in Turkish forum’s letter to President Obama… WE ARE WITH YOU 100% TO STOP THESE GENOCIDE MERCHANTS… AND THEIR INTERFARANCE TO AMERICAN LEGAL SYSTEM WITH FALSE CLAIMS OF GENOCIDE.

    Harut Sassounian’s Weekly Commentary

    Comments on Several Important
    Articles of Interest to Armenians

    Publisher, The California Courier
Senior Contributor, USA Armenian Life Magazine

In recent days, the international media published so many articlesof interest to

Armenians that it has become impossible to readthem all, let alone comment on them!

Here is a summary of some of the more interesting articles with a brief comment on each:

A senior Israeli general retaliated last week against the Turkish Prime Minister’s criticism of Israel. Major General Avi Mizrahiurged Erdogan to “first look in the mirror,” and reminded him of the Armenian Genocide, repression of the Kurds, and Turkey’s occupation of Northern Cyprus. In response, the Turkish Foreign Ministry angrily summoned Israel’s Ambassador and handed him a  diplomatic note of protest. In addition, a top Turkish official said he was offended by the Israeli General’s statement. Ironically, the murder of 1.5 million Armenians did not bother this official, but its mere mention did offend him!

According to the Turkish “Dogan Haber Agency,” Ali Ihsan Ozturk, President of the Teachers’ Association of Kayseri, and his colleagues, distributed halva (sweets) to passers-by in the main square of the town, “for the soul of Hitler.” Ozturk said he was doing this in reaction to the Israeli General’s criticism of Turkey. It is to be seen whether Israel’s leaders will swallow this bitter halva or retaliate with a protest note of their own!

As if Prime Minister Erdogan had not angered Israel and American Jews enough, a Turkish prosecutor now has launched an investigation into whether Israel’s leaders committed “genocide and crimes against humanity” in Gaza. If charged, these Israeli officials would be arrested if they visit Turkey. Regardless of the legal merits of this case, Turkey should be the last country on earth with the right to accuse anyone else of genocide! What audacity! What hypocrisy! As they say in Turkish: “Hem Suclu; Hem Guclu.” (Guilty and Macho)!

Zeev Elkin, a member of Israel’s Parliament, recently announced that the Knesset would shortly consider recognizing the Armenian Genocide. Israel, after years of officially refusing to recognize the Armenian Genocide in expectation of political-strategic gains from Turkey, could be finally getting on the right side of this issue.

Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported that Israel has suspended its flights to the Turkish resort town of Antalya, fearing terrorist attacks against its citizens. The Jerusalem Post reported that thousands of Israelis are boycotting Turkey because their “anger is both deep and palpable.” Could a ban on selling Israeli arms to Turkey be next?

Some American Jewish organizations are waking up from their deep moral coma, at long last! The American Jewish Committee (AJC) issued a press release on January 29, denouncing “Turkish Prime Minister’s shameful outburst at Davos.” On February 1, David Harris, Executive Director of AJC, issued an Open Letter to Erdogan, accusing him of using “vicious” and “inflammatory” words to criticize Israel. Harris even dared to remind Erdogan that Turkey “chose to close the border with landlocked Armenia from 1993 to today.” Will the AJC now desist from playing the role of designated liar for Turkey on the Armenian Genocide?

James Holmes, a former U.S. Ambassador to Ankara and President of the American-Turkish Council (ATC), told Hurriyet newspaper: “The American-Jewish community’s support for Turkey’s position on the Armenian genocide resolution is gone. They will not expend any political energy in blocking a resolution or a presidential proclamation.” Holmes should resign from the ATC rather than lobby for genocide denial for a fistful of dollars!

The Jerusalem Post quoted an unnamed official with “a leading American Jewish organization” as saying: “A deterioration in Israel-Turkey relations might prompt his group and others to reconsider” support for Ankara’s denial of the Armenian Genocide. In my opinion, some Jewish groups, seeing that the Armenian Genocide might be acknowledged by the Obama administration, are wisely abandoning the sinking ship of Turkish denial and jumping on the winning side before April 24!

David Plouffe, former campaign manager for Barack Obama’s presidential race, was offered $50,000 by Pres. Ilham Aliyev’s despotic regime to lecture in Baku on human rights and democracy and meet with Azerbaijan’s leaders. Plouffe was so embarrassed by criticism in the international media that he decided to donate his speaking fee to “groups that advocate democratization in the turbulent post-Soviet states of the region around the Caspian and Caucasus mountain range,” according to the Wall Street Journal. One can imagine the contortions on Aliyev’s face when he finds out that his money ended up with Azeri opposition groups or Armenians in Artsakh!

The Azeri Press Agency (APA) reported last month that the European Union supposedly paid millions of dollars to several prominent Turks to initiate a petition apologizing for the Armenian Genocide. APA alleged that professors Ahmet Insal, Halil Berktay, Murad Belge; journalist Mehmet Ali Birand, and writer Adalet Agaoglu had received $137,000 each; Prof. Ibrahim Kaboglu, $250,000; journalist Mine Kirikhanat, $90,000; Prof. Atilla Yayla, $575,000; Ertugrul Kurkchu, $1 million; “Mazlumder” group, $100,000; and Etien Mahchupian, Editor of Agos Armenian newspaper in Istanbul, $1.3 million. The Azeri press is even more notorious than Turkey’s for distorting the news! These Turks could truly make millions of dollars should they sue the APA for libel!

The Theatre Group Behind Out Of The Cage:
    The Flagship of Diaspora-based

    Living Armenian Culture

    By Appo Jabarian

    Executive Publisher / Managing Editor

    USA Armenian Life Magazine

    Friday,  February 20, 2009

On Sunday February 14, the folkloric hilarities of various cultures from – of all places – Pakistan, Japan, certain parts of the Middle East, of course Armenia and Lebanon, all the way to Glendale, came into a comical focus in Hollywood, USA.

The captivating theatrical ambiance at the Out Of The Cage comedy evening was multi-layered and multi-dimensional. The complexity and the diversity of the skits such as the farcical “Armenian Turkish Reconciliation,” the explosively comical “Japanese” and the “Triangle” sketches among several others, demanded commensurate talent. And there was certainly no shortage of that!

The evening was topped by a colorful performance of “Peshawar Ensemble” exhibiting a refined artistic capability to embody an imaginary “lost” and “rediscovered” small Armenian community of musicians “living” in Pakistan and singing in their mother tongue Armenian, with humorously intertwined – also imaginary Pakistani-Armenian accent.

The patron saints of this latest mostly homegrown Diaspora Armenian comedy, Vahe Berberian, Ara Madzounian and Vachik DerSarkissian, were adroitly supported by such respectable talents as Henrik Mansourian, Ara Baghdoyan, Sako Berberian, Maurice Kouyoumjian and Shahe Mankerian.

As a young actor, Chris Bedian showed a commanding and convincing stage presence. Equally talented Harout Dedeian, Salpi Yardemian and Helena Gregorian joined him in completing the cast that so smoothly navigated through the evening thanks to its perfected artistic cohesiveness and excellent sense of timing in delivering the punch lines of each and every skit.

The ultimate result was a parade of portrayers of a slew of hilarious characters who were adored by an electrified audience.

This latest artistic endeavor came after four years of rewriting and recalibrating the sequence of “events” that culminated in the creation of a volcano of laughter in an otherwise still untapped terrain of Armenian theatre in America.

Due to heightened demand, two more shows were slated for the second half of February in addition to the initial four. As of press time Monday Feb. 16, the new shows were also sold-out.

Even though the Out Of The Cage satiated the thirst of connoisseurs of the Armenian comedy, it created an even bigger appetite for more.

The theatre group behind this high quality and widely acclaimed Armenian theatrical achievement can be easily recognized as being the flagship of Diaspora-based living Armenian culture. Hats off to the director, the writers, the actors and the sound and stage technicians and their assistants.

Turkish leaders’ “brave” policy on Armenian issue

Anatolia news agency, Ankara, in English 20:41 GMT 18 Feb 09

Ankara, 18 February: A US congressman Robert Wexler, who is also the
co-chair of Congressional Turkey-Caucasus Group, said on Wednesday [18
February] that Turkey’s top officials’ brave policy on the Armenian
    issue was praiseworthy.

(Wexler ıs jewısh amerıcan  and headıng turkısh amerıcan frıendshıp group ın US congress)

Speaking to reporters after his talks with Turkish Prime Minister
Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara, US Congressman Robert Wexler said that
numerous issues concerning Turkey and USA were discussed during his
    bilateral meeting with Erdogan.

Replying to a question on Turkish-Israeli relations, Wexler said
improving the relations between Turkey and Israel was the best way to
follow for both countries, adding that such an idea was expressed
during his talks with Turkish President Abdullah Gul and Erdogan as
    well.

Commenting on the Armenian issue, Wexler said that Turkey and Armenia
had taken a step to start dialogue in a constructive way and he hoped
such step would contribute to the normalization of relations between
    the two countries.

Praising Gul and Erdogan’s efforts on the issue, Wexler said that the
US Congress should also focus on the successful normalization of the
    relations between Turkey and Armenia.

  • Turkey’s New Regional Role

    Turkey’s New Regional Role

Two Calls, Many Scenarios: How Will Washington Readjust to Turkey’s New Regional Role?

Publication: Eurasia Daily Monitor Volume: 6 Issue: 33
    February 19, 2009
    By: Saban Kardas

President Barack Obama telephoned President Abdullah Gul and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip separately on Monday. In his first official contact with the Turkish leaders since his inauguration, Obama discussed cooperation between the two countries over a wide spectrum of issues of common concern. Earlier this month, Vice President Joe Biden met Foreign Minister Ali Babacan at the security conference in Munich. Obama might have a face-to-face meeting with Gul during the NATO summit in April, celebrating the Atlantic alliance’s 60th anniversary.

The statement released by the White House said “President Obama had warm and productive phone conversations with Turkish President Gul and Prime Minister Erdogan… The President emphasized the importance of the United States’ alliance with Turkey and said he looks forward to working with both President Gul and Prime Minister Erdogan on a broad agenda of mutual strategic interest.” Obama stressed the need to strengthen the U.S.-Turkish relationship and work together toward meeting the challenges of the 21st century (www.whitehouse.gov, February 16).

The Turkish President’s office also issued a statement saying that “President Obama emphasized the importance he attaches to Turkish-U.S. relations and expressed his appreciation for [Turkey’s] leadership role in regional issues.” It was noted that the two sides had reiterated their determination to work together (www.tcbb.gov.tr, February 16).

In its report, the Turkish Prime Minister’s office highlighted President Obama’s positive remarks about the Turkish-American strategic partnership and Turkey’s role for regional peace. The statement said that Erdogan had “expressed [to Obama] Turkey’s sensitivities in Armenia and the Middle East and emphasized the importance of a fair and impartial American attitude in order not to hurt bilateral relations [between Turkey and the United States].” The statement also quoted Obama as saying, “I would like to affirm the vital role played by your leadership in the Middle East peace process. America has always appreciated Turkey’s sensitivities” (www.bbm.gov.tr, January 16).

Figuring out the reasons behind the timing of Obama’s calls has been a guessing game. Most observers focus on the issues raised during the talks as a key to understanding the content of the conversations and how Turkish-American relations may evolve in the days to come. According to official statements and various news stories, the issues discussed during both conversations included cooperation in NATO, U.S. support for Turkish-Iraqi rapprochement, the need for collaboration in Middle-East peace efforts, developments in Turkish-Armenian relations, Turkish-EU relations, and the United States’ policies toward Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Statements from the Turkish leaders preferred to highlight Obama’s praise of Turkey’s strategic role, especially its policies in the Middle East. Following Turkey’s vocal criticism of Israel during the Gaza invasion, concerns had arisen about the future of Turkish-American relations. Pro-AKP media outlets maintained that Obama’s expression of U.S. readiness to cooperate with Turkey was a positive sign that tension between Turkey and Israel would not undermine Turkey’s place in the United States’ Middle East policies. They go so far as to claim that despite the urging by some pro-Israel lobbyists for Washington to punish Ankara for the Davos incident, the warm phone conversations show that Ankara has successfully managed to keep its relations with Tel Aviv and Washington in separate baskets (Yeni Safak, February 18).

Other reports claimed that Obama solicited Turkey’s contributions for his administration’s plans for a new peace initiative in the Middle East. Furthermore, the Turkish side was reportedly assured by Obama that legislation recognizing the Armenian claims of genocide would not be brought before Congress (Radikal, February 17; Ihlas Haber Ajansi, February 17). According to a Turkish expert evaluating the phone conversations, it is unlikely that Obama will use the word “genocide” in his Armenian Remembrance Day statement on April 24 (Zaman, February 18). Erdogan said that he had had a detailed conversation with Obama about the Armenian claims, but he declined to give any details (Milliyet, February 19).

Turkish media outlets critical of the government, however, noted that the White House statement had departed from the issues highlighted by Ankara, instead putting emphasis on Turkey’s NATO membership and changes in the U.S. policies toward Pakistan and Afghanistan. They also pointed out that Obama’s office did not even mention the Armenian issue in the list of topics being discussed. According to these sources, some Washington-based analysts maintain that the reference to NATO was meant to remind Turkey of its responsibilities under the Atlantic alliance and warn Ankara about its “independent initiatives” (www.cnnturk.com, February 17; Cumhuriyet, February 17).

Indeed, Turkey has opted to develop special missions for itself outside the alliance framework—its role as peace broker in the Middle East, for example—and has occasionally deviated from the transatlantic community on issues such as how to deal with Russia, Sudan, and Iran. In Ankara’s view, this new activism could be complementary to Western efforts to promote peace and stability in troubled regions; but according to critics of the government, Turkey’s attempts to carve an autonomous international profile might strain Turkish-American relations.

Many Turkish analysts also agree that the mention of Afghanistan by the White House was significant in light of Washington’s recently announced plans to bolster U.S. troop levels in Afghanistan. About 800 Turkish troops are currently serving in Afghanistan under the NATO-led International Security and Assistance Force (ISAF), and Turkey has held the ISAF command for two terms in the past. Given the difficulties NATO has encountered in carrying out its mission in Afghanistan and the Obama administration’s determination to refocus its attention there, Ankara, along with other NATO allies, might be coming under pressure to increase its contributions to the ISAF and remove the obstacles it sets to EU-NATO coordination (Today’s Zaman, February 18, Hurriyet Daily News, February 18; EDM, February 9). When this issue was brought up in the past, Turkey declined to commit additional troops, but it remains to be seen how Ankara will respond to such requests in the run-up to the NATO Summit in April.

Discussions following Obama’s two telephone calls show that Turkish-American relations in the Obama administration are still in uncharted waters. By calling Gul and Erdogan separately, Obama showed that he was aware of who wielded power in Ankara; but how Washington will readjust itself to Ankara’s more assertive role in regional politics is a question that still begs for an answer. Developments ahead of the NATO summit and Obama’s handling of the Armenian claims will give more concrete indications of whether and how the parties will find common ground beyond rhetoric.
