Obama Stands By Armenian Genocide Recognition

    By Emil Danielyan

U.S. President Barack Obama on Monday stood by his earlier statements describing the mass killings of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire as genocide and said they should not hamper the normalization of Turkish-Armenian relations.

Making his first official visit to Ankara, Obama also said that he is “very encouraged” by Armenia’s and Turkey’s ongoing efforts to normalize bilateral ties.

“Well, my views are on the record and I have not changed those views,” Obama was reported to tell a joint news conference with Turkish President Abdullah Gul.

“I want to focus not on my views right now, but on the views of the Turkish and Armenian people. If they can move forward and deal with a difficult and tragic history, then I think the entire world should encourage that,” he said.

Obama made the same point when he addressed the Turkish parliament later in the day. “I know there are strong views in this chamber about the terrible events of 1915, and while there has been a good deal of commentary about my views, it is really about how the Turkish and Armenian people deal with the past,” he said. “And the best way forward for the Turkish and Armenian people is a process that works through the past in a way that is honest, open, and constructive.”

During his election campaign Obama repeatedly referred to the 1915-1918 slaughter of more than one million Ottoman Armenians as genocide and pledged reaffirm such declarations once in office. “The Armenian genocide is not an allegation, a personal opinion or a point of view, but rather a widely documented fact supported by an overwhelming body of historical evidence,” he said in a January 2008 statement on his campaign website. “America deserves a leader who speaks truthfully about the Armenian genocide and responds forcefully to all genocides. I intend to be that president.”

Obama is under strong pressure from the influential Armenian community in the United States to honor this pledge in his statement due on April 24, the Armenian Remembrance Day. He has also been warned by Ankara that the use of the word genocide would seriously harm U.S.-Turkish relations and undermine Turkish-Armenian reconciliation.

While not backtracking on his campaign statements, the U.S. president was on Monday careful not to publicly reiterate his affirmation of what many historians consider the first genocide of the 20th century. According to Western news agencies, he argued that the highly sensitive issue is on the agenda of the ongoing Turkish-Armenian dialogue.

“What I have been very encouraged by is that … there is a series of negotiations, a process between Armenia and Turkey to resolve a whole host of long-standing issues, including this one,” Obama told journalists. “I’m not interested in the United States in any way tilting these negotiations.”

Standing alongside Obama, Gul denounced Armenian efforts at genocide recognition and renewed Ankara’s calls for a joint Turkish-Armenian academic study of the 1915 events. “It is not a political but an historic issue,” he said. “That’s why we should let historians discuss the matter.”

For his part, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated on Friday that his nation will never admit to the “so-called genocide.” “For Turkey, it is impossible to accept a thing that does not exist,” Erdogan told a news conference in London.

Obama’s statements in Ankara prompted different reactions from the two main Armenian-American lobby organizations. Aram Hamparian, executive director of the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA), said Obama “missed a valuable opportunity to honor his public pledge to recognize the Armenian Genocide.” “We expect that the President will, during Genocide Prevention Month this April, stand by his word,” Hamparian said in a statement.

“For the first time, a U.S. President has delivered a direct message to Turkish officials in their own country that he stands behind his steadfast support and strong record of affirmation of the Armenian Genocide,” read a separate statement by Bryan Ardouny of the Armenian Assembly of America. “On April 24, the Assembly looks forward to President Obama’s statement reaffirming the Armenian Genocide.”

An Orgy of “Turkish Soup With Armenian Bones” in Southern California

Can you believe that right here in Southern California the denialist Turkish government is organizing the so-called “Anatolian Cultures and Food Festival?”

Are you shocked that besides the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Turkey, the sponsors also include the Organization of Istanbul Armenians?

During the recent years Turkey has been leading a multi-pronged campaign against Armenians for the sole purpose of obstructing justice.

While some of these Turkish campaigns are being carried out by denialist Turks alone, some others are being executed with the naïve or involuntary participation of some of the victims, the Armenians.

Turkey has long been attempting to fool the international community that it is well on its way to forging lasting peace with its neighbor, Armenia, by creating the false impression that it is “seriously” engaged in “dialogue with Armenians.” But in reality these so-called “dialogues” serve as a pretext to derail other nations’ legislative activities relating to their official recognition of the Armenian Genocide.

Turkey also is desperately seeking to lure the Armenians of the Diaspora into these false “dialogues” by way of panel “discussions,” joint “lectures,” “friendly” internet discussion groups such the armworkshop at the University of Michigan, among others.

Outdoing itself, Turkey has initiated through its Ministry of Culture and Tourism the Orange County, CA festival which has already cost over $2.5 million.

An initial look at the name of the organizing entity creates the impression that a major American organization called “Pacifica Institute” is the one that is presenting this festival. But a careful research reveals that Pacifica Institute is none other than the former Global Cultural Connections, which was founded in 2003 by S. California’s Turkish-American apologists of Ankara.

Despite masquerading as an innocent third party, Pacifica Institute confesses that its objective in organizing the “Anatolian Cultures and Food Festival” is “to introduce Turkey and Turkish culture in a unique way, from past to present.”

What Anatolian cuisine when that “cuisine” is a set of misappropriated recipes from the martyred Armenians, Greeks, Assyrians, Arabs, and others during the Genocide?

The current Anatolian cuisine is nothing more that Turkish soup made with Armenian, Greek and Assyrian bones. (To see a live art presentation on Turkish Soup, please click on the following link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=urWCGtI7XXc. The live art is designed by well-known Artist Zareh of Los Angeles, the descendant of a genocide survivor. The presentation has been widely featured by the mainstream American media since 2003).

What Anatolia with its turkified name “Anadolu,” when in fact that vast region east of Byzantine includes none other than Western Armenia with its Armenian Highlands; Armenian Cilicia; Greek Constantinople, Pontus and Smyrna; Kurdish Media and Assyrian Merdin?

What Turkish culture, when in fact the Seljuk (later called Turkish) hordes of the Steppes of Central Asia invaded Armenia, in 1071AD and forcibly subjected the indigenous people to turkification and stole their traditions only to turn around and market them as their own?

They literally stole the indigenous people’s babies to create the Ottoman Janissary Army; stole their cuisine to form the Turkish cuisine; and finally stole their lands through genocide to “build” today’s Turkey — the last vestige of the dismantled Turkish Ottoman Empire.

And now, shamelessly, they are distorting the identity of Armenian towns such as Van, as “a Turkish city.” They are distorting the holy name of Akhtamar Armenian Apostolic Church as “Akdamar” (meaning “white vein” in Turkish, the turkified name of the church and the island located in Lake Van. But the original “Akhtamar” pronunciation in Armenian expresses “Akh” meaning “Oh!” and “Tamar,” the name of an Armenian girl).

They have the guts to come to California and show-off their “Traditional Ottoman Janissary” band, reigniting the troubling memories of the infamous hordes of henchmen that were made up by kidnapped Armenian, Greek, Assyrian, Kurdish, and Arab boys. The Janissaries were used against their original ethnic groups in order to force them into slavery.

They have a lot of “courage” to come here to “sell” their loots, confiscated from Armenians, Greeks, Assyrians and others during their genocidal campaigns of 1915-1923, as Turkish cultural novelties. And guess who – among others – is voluntarily or involuntarily cooperating with them? The Organization of Istanbul Armenians!

And when are they throwing this orgy of Turkish Soup with Armenian bones? During the month of April, the month of worldwide commemoration of the Armenian Genocide.

Understandably, several members of the Los Angeles Armenian community have strongly criticized OIA’s central board members. One may ask, where is OIA’s central board based? In Istanbul! It is obvious that they have “agreed” to participate under duress and fear of being subjected to all kinds of blackmail in Turkey — another gross human rights violation!

Ankara must be reminded loud and clear that no matter how hard it tries to shove under the rug the memory of Turkey’s guilt in the Armenian Genocide, today’s and coming Armenian generations around the world will remember and continue their quest for justice.
In the absence of genuine Turkish will to make amends to Armenians, Ankara’s ploys will be unmasked and many more millions of dollars will go down the drain of denialism.

    “Ravished Armenia”

The first Hollywood Film on the Armenian Genocide

    Tuesday, April 28, 2009, 6:00 PM sharp
San Francisco Public Library, Koret Auditorium
100 Larkin St. (at Grove), San Francisco, CA 94102-4733

Ravished Armenia and the Story of Aurora Mardiganian
Film historian Anthony Slide will present and discuss the 1919 Hollywood film “Ravished Armenia,” based on the memoirs of Armenian Genocide survivor Aurora (Arshaluys) Mardiganian.  The film’s only surviving 21-minute segment will be played, as well as clips from Slide’s audiotape interview of Mardiganian, who also starred in the film.  Slide will discuss his research about Mardiganian and the movie, considered one of Hollywood’s most sought-after “lost” films.  An original poster and photos of the production will also be on display.

“Ravished Armenia” was the personal account by Aurora Mardiganian of the brutal rape and murder of the Armenian people by the Turkish Ottoman Empire between 1915 and 1918.  During this first genocide of the 20th century, half of the entire Armenian population living on its historic homeland in what is now Turkey was annihilated through forced death marches into the desert, extreme abuse, and murder.  Mardiganian’s memoir “Ravished Armenia,” also known as “Auction of Souls,” was first published in 1918, shortly after her arrival in the United States.  The film version was produced in 1919, and both the book and movie created a considerable stir throughout the Western world.

The full-length motion picture is believed to be lost, but a 21-minute segment from the full length motion picture “Ravished Armenia” by then well-known film director Oscar Apfel has been recovered.  The segment graphically relates the narrative account of a young Armenian girl who survived the 1915 Armenian Genocide, lived to tell about it, and serves as the lead actress in the film.

    ANTHONY SLIDE:
Alongside the presentation of the movie’s remaining segment, film historian Anthony Slide will discuss Aurora Mardiganian and the production of the film. Slide is editor of the book, “Ravished Armenia and the story of Aurora Mardiganian,” (Scarecrow Press, 1997), which reprints Mardiganian’s original memoir in its entirety, as well as original documentation on the film.

“I came across the ‘Ravished Armenia’ book about 30 years ago, and at first, I couldn’t believe that there was actually someone who experienced all of those events. I thought the stories might have been an accumulation of experiences of several Armenian women,” Slide recently told Bay Area ANC Chairwoman Roxanne Makasdjian. “But, I confirmed that Aurora indeed existed, and I found her in Los Angeles.” After several attempts to meet her, Slide eventually succeeded in interviewing Mardiganian, and he will present clips from that audiotape interview.

Slide has authored or edited more than fifty books on the history of popular entertainment. The Los Angeles Times called Slide “a one-man publishing phenomenon.”  He has served as associate archivist of the American Film Institute, resident film historian of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, has produced a number of documentary films on silent screen personalities, and has lectured widely on film history.

  • OBAMA WILL USE THE TERM “GENOCIDE”

OBAMA WILL USE THE TERM “GENOCIDE”

A major think tank calls on President Obama not to recognize the killings of Armenians as ‘genocide’. ‘If Obama uses the word genocide, the Turkish response will be harsh and trigger a bitter breach in relations,’ the CSIS says.

The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), a major and bipartisan think tank in the United States capital, Monday called on President Barack Obama not to recognize World War I-era killings of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire as “genocide.”

Zbigniew Brzezinski, national security adviser for former President Jimmy Carter, and Brent Scowcroft, national security adviser for former Presidents Gerald Ford and George H. W. Bush, jointly introduced the CSIS report at a meeting.

    Encourage and support rapprochement

“If President Obama takes no action to prevent congressional enactment of the (Armenian) resolution (pending in the House of Representatives), endorses the measure, or uses the word genocide himself, the Turkish response will be harsh and trigger a bitter breach in relations,” the CSIS said.

It said the United States, “rather than seek to legislate history,” should encourage and support rapprochement that Turkey and Armenia are trying to accomplish.

At the end of a European tour, Obama will visit Turkey April 5-7.

In a related development, four leading Democratic lawmakers sent a letter to President Abdullah Gul and Armenian President Serge Sarkisian, voicing their support for a Turkish-Armenian rapprochement.

“It is critical that the United States and international community support Armenia and Turkey during their ongoing efforts to normalize relations and create positive dynamics in the Caucasus region,” Congressman Robert Wexler said on behalf of the four men.

    Four leading lawmakers

“It is in the interest of the United States and both Armenia and Turkey that differences between Yerevan and Ankara are overcome and that a solid foundation is laid to enhance cooperation and diplomatic relations between these two nations,” he said.

The letter was signed by Wexler, chairman of the Subcommittee on Europe in the House Committee on Foreign Affairs; Ike Skelton, Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee; John Murtha, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Defense in the House Committee on Appropriations; and Alcee L. Hastings, Co-Chairman of the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe (the U.S. Helsinki Commission).

    Comments on domestic front

On domestic policy, the CSIS said the end of the ruling Justice and Development Party, or AKP’s, domination was not imminent, although opposition parties would benefit from the AKP’s gradual loss of support. The AKP won Sunday’s nationwide local elections, but its popular support dropped compared to previous polls.

“The AKP is likely to refrain from (earlier plans) of a major revision of the Constitution,” the CSIS said.

Asked to comment on “the pressure on the media by the government” and a near-$500 million penalty imposed on Doğan Holding media group, Bulent Aliriza, director of Turkey Project at CSIS and writer of the domestic politics section in the report, said he was concerned over the “unfortunate” developments.

“I hope the government would ease its position on the media,” he said.

LOGOGLU: OBAMA WILL USE THE TERM “GENOCIDE”

Turkey’s retired ambassador to Washington, Faruk Logoglu claimed that U.S. President Barack Obama will use the term “Armenian genocide” during his speech on 24 April, after his Turkey visit.

Logoglu said that he considers that U.S. President will use the term “genocide” for 1915 events. He said, “A resolution is introduced to Congress. Turkey and its friends should prevent these happening with using lobby organizations in United States.”

Speaking at the same place, Adana Consul of United States, Eric Green said, “The decision of Obama on visiting Turkey shows the importance of Turkey for Obama administration. I agree with the opinion that Turkey will be the energy corridor that transfers energy from Iran, Iraq and from east. We heard about anti-US opinion in Turkey. During the time since i have been in Adana, people of the city were so friendly and hospitable against us.”———————–

  • GUL DENIES REPORT ON OPENING OF BORDERS

GUL DENIES REPORT ON OPENING OF BORDERS

President Abdullah Gul denied report of Wall Street Journal claiming that state border between Turkey and Armenia will be open on April 16. Abdullah Gul said before his departure from Germany, “Information in media on Turkey’s opening its border with Armenia is not true”.

Abdullah Gul said that Turkey aims to establish peace and stability in Caucasus and encourages friendly relations with all states in the region, CNN Turk reported.

    ARMENIA HOPEFUL FOR 16 APRIL

Director of Caucas Institute in Armenia, Iskandarian said that opening of state border between Turkey and Armenia on 16 April is possible.

Expectations due to opening of Turkish Armenian border within this month is on increase. Director of Caucas Institute in Armenia, Alexander Iskandarian said that opening of state border between Turkey and Armenia on 16 April is possible.

Alexander Iskandarian told to Armenian press that there is probability for opening of Turkish Armenian border on 16 April. American Newspaper Wall Street Journal wrote that Turkey and Armenia will announce that they have agreement on opening of borders and establishment of diplomatic relations on 16 April refering to diplomatic sources in Brussels. However Yerevan or Ankara did not make any official statement over this report.

Alexander Iskandarian underscored that a closed border in 21th century is absurd and said, “Benefits of opening of Armenian border is clear. Transportation will be easier, expences will decrease and we will have railway connection with Europe. At the same time it will provide us a way to Black Sea and Eastern provinces of Turkey.”

Iskandarian said that Armenia can contribute to economical development of Eastern provinces of Turkey and underscored that opening of state border with Armenia is also for favour of Turkey in this aspect.

BARACK OBAMA VISIT PROVIDES CONDITION FOR OPENING OF TURKEY-ARMENIA BORDER”

Turkey’s Centre for International Relations and Strategic Analysis says U.S. President Barack Obama’s visit to Turkey creates conditions for opening of the Turkey-Armenia relations.”Opening Turkey-Armenia borders can not be surprise for anyone,” Turkey’s Centre for International Relations and Strategic Analysis (TURKAM) director Sinan Ogan told Trend News.

U.S. President Barack Obama will pay an official visit to Turkey on April 6-7. Opening Turkey-Armenia border and issues related Washington-Ankara relations will be discussed during the visit, Huriyyet newspaper reported.

“President Barack Obama did what his predecessors did not. Before the presidential election Obama promised Armenians to recognize Armenian genocide fives times verbally and one in a written form,” Ogan added.

Ogan said U.S. needs Turkey in withdrawing forces from Iraq and deploying new ones in Afghanistan. Turkey-Armenia border will open soon. It can take place also this month.

“Official Ankara made terms to Yerevan. None of these terms have been fulfilled yet. We oppose opening borders as Armenia has not fulfilled Turkey’s terms,” he added.

Ogan said if Turkey acts in an arbitrary manner regarding border issue, it will not have a positive effect on the resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh problem.

“If Turkey takes into consideration Azerbaijani government’s views and makes terms to Yerevan while opening borders, it can contribute to the conflict’s resolution. It will not help resolve the conflict if Azerbaijan’s interests are ignored while taking this step,” he said.

He said before opening borders Ankara must receive guarantee from Armenia and Washington and Azerbaijan’s interests must be taken into consideration.

“Though greater part of Turkish public is against opening borders, this move will not stir up anxiety in country,” he said.

Turkey and Armenia seek to normalize ties severed since 1993. Turkish President Abdullah Gul visited Yerevan on Sept. 6, 2008 upon the invitation of his Armenian counterpart Serzh Sargsyan to watch an Armenia-Turkey football match.

Efforts have been made to normalize ties between the two countries ever since.

Armenian-Turkish ties have been severed due to Armenia’s claims of an alleged genocide, the country’s occupation of 20 percent of Azerbaijani lands and territorial claims to Turkey’s Anatolia province.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and 7 surrounding districts. Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group – Russia, France, and the U.S. – are currently holding the peace negotiations.

WSJ: “TURKEY, ARMENIA MAY SIGN AGREEMENT ON 16 APRIL”

Wall Street Journal reported refering to diplomatic sources that the agreement between Turkey and Armenia may be signed on 16 April and wrote that a high level Turkish diplomat said that U.S. struggles to easen the agreement between parties.

Wall Street Journal newspaper wrote that Turkey and Armenia paving way for a historical agreement and refered diplomatic sources writing that Turkey and Armenia may announce very soon that they are agreed on opening of state border and establishment of diplomatic relations. Newspaper wrote that such step may help stabilization of the region which gained importance as a corridor for shipment of petroleum and natural gas.

Newspaper wrote that the timing of the agreement was arranged considering Turkey visit of U.S. President Barack Obama. WSJ stated that the agreement between Turkey and Armenia will include three main clauses; Opening of border, establishment of diplomatic relations, establishment of joint historians committee for researchment of 1915 events.

American newspaper wrote that there is a strong opposition by Azerbaijan against this agreement although European countries welcome such agreement for stabilization of Caucasus.

In this context newspaper quoted Deputy Assistant Secretary of United States for European and Eurasion Affairs Matthew Bryza saying, “Normalization of Turkish-Armenian relations will have a positive effect in economy and transportation in the region.”

Newspaper reported that Bryza will visit Azerbaijan to discuss with Azerbaijani officials that how will possible opening of Turkey-Armenia border contribute to resolution process of Karabakh conflict.

Newspaper wrote that Analysts think that progress in normalization of Turkish-Armenian relations will prevent recognition of Armenian resolution by United States.
