    POOR RICHARD’S REPORT
    Chapter 17
    Big Banks Are Really Bad
One item that needs particular attention is that computers can work wonders only depending on who is programing and running them.
Banking has the same problem. Who is running the bank? It is not the computer running the bank.
When Bill Gates made Microsoft Windows for every computer worldwide that turned on the greed machine, wannabees wanted to make as much as he did or least become a billionaire. Today these wannabees are thinking short term instead of long term. Bill Gates had a goal. Improve the world of computing.
Timothy 6:10 states it very clearly in a single sentence for us humans. “For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evils.”(English Standard Version) It does not say “money is the root of all evil.” It is how one makes money – not how much- that counts.
Individuals who had huge egos and no morals abound in history. Men who waged war with
no regard for life like Genghis Kahn and Napoleon were mass murderers in reality. That is why Harry Truman, President of the United States after WWII, insisted on the Nuremberg Trials of Nazi Party Members to make sure that 100 years from now they did not become folk heroes. Money was not their primary focus in life.
Truman, Churchill, Eisenhower, Reagan, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk were world leaders who had goals to do well for the people during crucial times in the twentieth century to name a few. Money was not their primary goal.
J P Morgan was the most powerful banker. He set the standards and companies he backed are still powerful and remain leaders in their respective industries.
Sadly, his bank, one of the most powerful and most fined, has him spinning in his grave. They call him “pin wheel JP” in bankers heaven.
When banks become too large managers tend to inflate their figures to their superiors, just like communist countries. Then a “rogue” trader makes a mistake and the cover up begins, ending in apparent suicides maybe?
JP Morgan manipulates almost every market they are in. They are fined billions. This allows them to take part of the fine as a tax deduction. If they had to go to a real court, the Judge and Jury would probably break the bank up into five different businesses, or better yet merge their divisions with smaller banks.
They have been behind the manipulation of gold and silver markets since 2008 when they bought Bear Stearns. The monies from the Quantitative Easing (QE’s) done by the misguided Federal Reserve, has been hoarded by most banks because the velocity of Money as measured by the Federal Reserve is down – not up. With all that money supposedly being pumped into the economy, the velocity of money should be soaring. I believe, and I could be wrong, but JP Morgan Chase has been using these funds for shorting silver and gold contracts and then buying the low price metals in the Exchange Traded Funds and taking delivery to the metals. This is in direct violation of commodity rules of fair trading. They then deliver these precious metals to commodity brokers to whom they owe stock. They have actually sold high and bought low by breaking existing laws or operating in the very grey areas. JP Morgan is operating immorally and dishonestly for a world leading industry.
The US Government and the Federal Reserve have been frantically trying to get the economy moving and to fight deflation. All they have to do is stop the manipulation in Silver and watch the metal fly to the moon. Silver is used in practically everything beside coins.
The precious metals will stay down or go lower with minor blips up, until JP Morgan Chase is called before a Congressional Investigating Committee for Criminal Activities.
Moral: Governments and Central Bankers should tighten controls on their bankers or else the Bankers end up running the Government.

    Libor
    London Inter-Bank Offered Rate
Major banks and their traders have been rigging the overnight interest rates for years. This is what we have to pay for various services.
Each country has its own investigation and as the fines roll in and the cover ups are exposed it will get worse for the international banking industry. The public is supposed to be able to trust their bankers.
Where is all those billion dollars in fines actually going?
This is just the beginning for the international banks worldwide.

ARMENIAN MYTHS : THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS TO PRESS COVERAGE …WHEN ONLY ONE SIDE OF A CONFLICT IS HEARD

    Ergun KIRLIKOVALI

Foreign Policy Forum (FPF) created by Association of Turkish Industrialists and Businessmen (TUSIAD) and Bogazici University (BU) held a conference on the Turkish-Armenian conflict at 16:00-18:00 on November 11, 2014 in the TUSIAD building. Its objective was to dissect the events of 1915 which are perceived and interpreted variously by different groups in Turkey, Armenia and other parts of the world on the eve of its hundredth year. The promotion stated that it specifically wished to discuss historical memories, political discourses, and policies of the states and the conference was titled: “To discuss the 1915 Tragedy in its hundredth year: Meaning, Memory, and Politics.” Up to now, everything is hunky-dory… Nos problemos…
The problem arises when one reads who are invited: An Armenian historian (Bentley University teaching staff Asbed Kotchikian,) another Armenian historian (Paris Sciences Po University teaching staff Michel Marian,) and a third Armenian ( Director of Analytical Center for Global and Regional Cooperation in Erivan.) “OK,” you say to yourself “these are all Armenians and they are certainly a party to this conflict.” Then your eyes scroll down to see how many are invited to represent the responsible opposing views. And therein lies the problem: there is none!
You check the list over and over; you look front and back, nope! Nothing! Zip! Nada!

But if only Armenians are invited to a “conference,” how can the unsuspecting audiences be given the benefit of rebuttals? Who will know if the facts are omitted due to anti-Turkish bias, figures are misrepresented to tow the official Armenian party-line, and/or interpretations are stacked against Turks and other Muslims?
If only one side of a conflict is heard, can one call this conference an intellectual inquiry? Or even a conference?
Where does it say conferences shall be held among like-minded individuals?
Can one arrive at the absolute truth by hearing the Armenians only? Can justice be served if half the story is deliberately excluded?
Now, if TUSIAD did this alone, I could perhaps understand it. I would convince myself that the kind businessmen wanted a quick resolution of a nagging issue, so that they can attend to what they do best: conduct business. But here lies the second problem: one of the organizers is a professor! In fact, he is teaching, sadly, at my alma-mater, namely Bogazici University. Does not this professor know that universities are vibrant places precisely because controversial issues can be freely explored in scholarly and civil manner? How can one “explore” a controversy, if all the discussants agree? Is not that conference reduced to a chorus? Or even a monologue? How can a “professor” allow such a violation of scholarly values? Is that what he learned when he studied for his PhD degree? Where did he get is degrees?
A Turkish-American group wrote to the organizers and kindly proposed the names of four historians from the United States who they thought would level the field and present a fuller picture to the unsuspecting audiences. Fair and square, right? Apparently, it is perfectly all right for some organizers to invite a group of partisans and still call it a “conference.” Try doing that at an American campus… Would not the American media immediately pounce on the organizer, questioning his/her credentials and degrees if not his/her values and even character?
Turkish-American proposal was rejected. Reason? Fasten your seat belts for this one. The organizers wanted to find out what the Armenians wanted from Turkey and what feelings and thoughts motivated them. Duh!
They said they never organize conferences where a single idea dominates. Really? So what different ideas are there among the three Armenians invited? Can you hear a single word about the Turkish victims of Armenian revolutionaries out of them? How about Armenian terrorism? Armenian revolts? Bank raids, assassinations, and bombings? Treason? Territorial demands? Killing of Turks and other Muslims under uniforms of the invaders (Russian, French, British, and Greek?)
You might think “Well, let them do it. What could go wrong?” Answer: A lot!
Which brings us to the main theme of this essay. Just look at the ill-informed perceptions presented by the Hurriyet Daily News (HDN) columnist below. Her readers will be misinformed and mislead. How many of those readers, you think, will bother to sit down and read “Death & Exile” by Justin McCarthy or “The Armenians…” by Esat Uras? They will just take those misconceptions at face value. This is how the Armenian lobby wins… and we help them win!
BARÇIN YİNANÇ, in her column “Turkey, Armenia, 2015 and beyond” (HDN, Nov 13, 2014) says this:
“… (w)e need to continue talking about the issue, which has two dimensions: Turkish–Armenian relations on the one hand, and on the other hand the Armenian genocide issue,” ignoring the Azerbaijan dimension. She should also used the qualifier “alleged” before genocide, because there is no court verdict saying it “is” genocide.
Then she adds this part which is really painful for me: “There has been a transition from total denial to the acknowledgment that something terrible and tragic happened.” Turkey never denied that there was a vast and complex human suffering that engulfed all the people of the era and area. Form where does she get this idea of “total denial”? Here is an excerpt from the letter to the New York Times by the Turkish Ambassador to the United States, Dr. Sukru Elekdag, as early as May 23, 1985: “… No one has ever denied the overall tragedy that, 70 years ago, brought death and suffering to all the people of the Ottoman Empire’s eastern Anatolian region, and that Armenians perished as a part of this…”
Massacre of the truth continues with her sweeping generalizations when she opines “… Yet Turkey, be it at the government or at the society level, is still far from accepting the word genocide…” And why should Turkey or any other country recognize genocide? Are you not aware of the 1948 U.N. Convention of Prevention and Punishment of Genocide requirements that for a genocide label to stand, a “competent tribunal” has to go through “due process” to prove “intent to destroy?” Was this ever done in the Armenian case? No. So how can you claim genocide when there is no genocide verdict? To call the 1915 events genocide, would be telling a lie to the public that there is a court verdict, when there is absolutely not. This position was supported by the December 17, 2013 verdict by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) on Perincek vs Switzerland. So, the law says that there is no genocide verdict, but you expect Turkey to accept it anyway?
Here is how successful Armenian propaganda has been on this columnist: “While there is a worldwide acceptance of the 1915 events as genocide…” Really? Worldwide, huh? Did you know that the United Nations, the United Sates, the United Kingdom, Sweden and Australia do not accept the label of genocide? In fact, no nation in Africa or Asia accept it. Only about 20 countries accept the Armenian propaganda and political pressure to call it genocide. That’s 20 out of 205 countries. Do the math! What do you come up with? Less than 20%, right? That is “worldwide” in your book?
Besides, genocide is not decided by parliaments, politicians, or media. It is not decided by columnists, activists, and propagandists. It is not decided by historians, clergy, businessmen, athletes or actors. There is one and only one venue for a genocide verdict: “competent tribunal” as set forth by the UN, which is the International Court of Justice in the Haag. So, do you realize how ignorant your comment is now expecting Turkey “… at the government or at the society level…” to accept the word genocide? It boils down to one’s respect for law. We are talking about law here, not history anymore. While we are at it, maybe you should be introduced to the concept of laws having no jurisdiction retroactively. In other words, a 1948 UN law cannot dictate characterization on 1915. One cannot judge the past with current values and laws, as that would undermine the entire justice system.
Here is another jewel : “… Armenians are disappointed that this has not triggered legal action…” If you knew the facts that 1923 Lausanne agreement dealt with the Armenian issue and the 1934 & 1937 agreements with the United Sates dealt with Armenian-American issues, then you would know that those chapters are closed by international law. Another fact is that if Armenian knew they could win a court battle against Turkey, do you think they would wait a second to sue Turkey? Why do you think Armenian archives are still closed today?
Ah, the denial laws. My favorite. She quotes the Armenian frustration “… that has led them to concentrate on enacting laws to criminalize deniers…” History cannot and should not be legislated. Doing so would destroy the freedom of speech, as well as free press and academia. Is that what the Armenians want? Well, I got news for you: they will never ever get it. If you do not believe me, go ahead and read what the French scholars said about draconian denial laws in Appel De Blois: “… History must not be a slave to contemporary politics nor can it be written on the command of competing memories…” I certainly put my signature on that public statement.
“Taboos about reparation and restitution can also be broken in Turkey…” Taboos? Is that what you think reparations and restitutions are? Have you heard about the four step Armenian plans that have been published for almost a hundred years now? 1) Acceptance 2) Apology 3)Reparations 4) Land ? Do you know Armenians think step 1 is satisfied , thanks to ill-informed liberals and columnists in Turkey, and step 2 is achieved by PM Erdogan’s 23 April 2014 speech of condolence, and that it is time for reparations now? That is not “taboo,” that is the “plan.”
And for Ünal Çeviköz’s claim that opening borders with Armenia will somehow serve Turkish interests better, I am reminded of Greece promising Turkey to behave if Turkey allowed Greece back into NATO in 1981. Thirty plus years later, we all know how it turned out, don’t we? I find Çeviköz’s argument weak, ill-informed, off-base, and unrealistic. Anyone who fails to appreciate the scope and depth of Azerbaijan’s pain and suffering at the hands of Armenians and Azerbaijan’s sensitivity about suggestions of giving the store away to Armenians in spite of ongoing Armenian aggression and occupation in Karabakh, should not be a diplomat in the first place.
Summary: There are two sides to every story and you cannot resolve differences by hearing only one side.

    Istanbul: 13 November 2014

Yesterday, three sailors from the uncontrollably violent neighborhood called America met the true face of Turkey. Poor boys, they don’t even know what they represent. They don’t even know that their so-called leaders have made them punching bags for its criminal enterprise called American imperialism. They don’t even know how America and its treasonous internal agents, in particular the Turkish government, are attempting to destroy the future of the Turkish youth.

Perhaps these American boys got a quick lesson in the true nature of Turkish-American relations yesterday? But, sadly, probably not. The American boys ran back to the false safety of their warship, re-entering their “safe” world of imperialist propaganda, economic excess and hypocrisy. But there is no safety anywhere any longer. That is the gift of America to Turkey, and to the world. As usual, America authorities and its treacherous collaborating Turkish puppets screamed in outrage. And, as usual, the youth of Turkey, the true defenders of the Republic of Turkey, went to jail for exercising their patriotic duty. Nothing has changed, except one thing. Turkish young people, the nation’s true patriotic voice, will not take American crap anymore. And America should understand that. Listen and learn, America. You owe it to your own youth. Think of it this way, think of it as a symbol.

That’s the way the resident American-imposed agent of destruction, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, thought about his hooding of Turkish women into a grotesque series of Middle Age costumes that squeeze feminine brains into numb submission. So what, declared the then prime minister, if the head scarf is a political symbol? So what, indeed! Erdoğan used his compliant covered women to destroy democracy in his own country. He and his collaborators hid behind their women’s headscarves to do America’s dirty work. And now they cannot safely visit any neighborhood in their own land. No “hood” is safe for the hoodlums. And now the new president hides in a billion-dollar illegal palace, his inadvertent monument to treason. So what if he and his ilk cannot appear in public! So what!

So what if in 1980 the American president celebrated the success of his CIA-engineered military coup by proclaiming “Our boys did it!” Yes, then his gangster BOYZ did it. And yesterday, today’s Turkish youth remembered. And yesterday, our Turkish boys did it to America, symbolically, of course, because Turkish youth is civilized. They can be no other way; they are the current-day “soldiers of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.” This is something that the treacherous opposition political polities can neither say nor understand. Yes, Turkish young people are civilized and enlightened by the patriotic principles of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. That’s why, yesterday, no one, neither American boy nor Turkish boy was hurt. No one was tortured. No one was hung. No one was shot, exploded, beaten, gassed, or otherwise maimed. And that’s a lot more than America can ever say about their overt and covert interventions in Turkey’s affairs.

So what if America and its craven ambassador, Francis Ricciardone, aided and abetted the Turkish government in its beating, gassing, maiming and murdering of democratically assembled Gezi Park protestors. “The Turkish government is having a conversation with its people,” said the deceitful ambassador, as he arranged to have more poisonous gas sold to Erdoğan and his hoodlum police. A “conversation?” So what!

So what if the same ambassador conspired with the main opposition party leader to assure the election of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to the presidency!

So what if yesterday the American boys’ heads momentarily felt the experience of being symbolically hooded! Symbolically hooded, not actually hung like so many patriotic Turkish young people have been. And by their own government! The Turkish people have been strangled and hooded by America, by its CIA meddlers and by its corrupt politicians for decades. And in the past decade of Erdoğan’s treacherous rule, America’s CIA “boys” have done it again. Or tried to.

So what if America has used its youth to kill hundreds of thousands of Iraqis in its deceitful, illegal war of aggression!

So what if America has humiliated the Turkish military by hooding its soldiers in Iraq in July 2003!

So what if America has conspired with Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Jordan to kill hundreds of thousands of Syrians in its deceitful pretext of bringing democracy!

So what if America has supported the treasonous, under-educated, Islamic zealot, CIA-asset, Fethullah Gulen for decades in the Pennsylvania countryside!

So what if Gulen and Erdoğan have collaborated for decades in treacherous union to do America’s bidding in the subversion of the Turkish Republic! So what if the Turkish Army has been destroyed! So what if the independence of the Turkish judiciary has collapsed! So what if rivers have been stopped, farmers’ fields uprooted, forests felled, eternal olive trees murdered, lakes polluted, mountains plundered, the air made poisonous, all in pursuit of private profit, all indicative of massive governmental corruption! So what if the government has looted public funds! So what if the Turkish mass media slithers like a reptile on its overstuffed belly doing the bidding of its governmental master! So what if Turkey stinks from America’s subversion like a rotting corpse in the noonday sun!

    Yes, SO WHAT?

Yesterday, clearly, directly, in a street-theater performance, Turkish “boyz” encountered American “boyz” in the Turkish “hood.” The US embassy in Turkey called the incident “appalling.” What is appalling is the embassy’s ignorance and arrogance. What is appalling is the criminal behavior of its criminal boss, the president of the United States. It is he and Erdoğan and all their co-conspirators, all the ones who need protection by regiments of armed-to-the-teeth goons, who deserve to be hooded. And now they can never step foot in our hood, ever again. Not ever! That’s the message from yesterday. Take your warships and your political puppets and go!

    POOR RICHARDS REPORT Chapter 16

    POOR RICHARDS REPORT
    Chapter 16
THE REAL MEANING OF THE 2014 ELECTIONS
Our forefathers who wisely founded the United States of America had the farsightedness to glimpse into the future and see when their leader would come under fire. They wisely set up checks and balances. The President would be elected every four years and the House of Representatives every two. Also only one third of the senate would stand for election every two years along with the House.
The final check would be the Supreme Court of the United States which would decide if the laws passed were constitutional. The Congress and the President would decide who would sit on the court. Their term was for life.
What is amazing about the document is that it was formed by citizens from all walks of life. There was no gridlock.
Gridlock is when the house passes a bill and the senate ignores their bill, or votes it down. In England the Prime Minister can call for a new election. It is interesting that their Prime Minister has to answer questions in their Parliament meetings.
Every member of Congress has a committee or is on one. Each committee is made up of 14 members. Ideally seven from each party, with the Speaker of the House deciding to break a tie vote. So when the house is lopsided to one party the majority has time to do other things and can skip meetings.
I was once fortunate enough to be with Congressman McEwen from upstate NY when he was one of few republicans that won in the Goldwater political debauchery in 1965. He was one of three republican members on the committees and had to meet every day at a hearing while democrat members met once every 7 days.
In his office his secretary had urgent messages pinned in his chair. In order for him to sit down he had to pull the pin out and read the message and give her an answer.
So the minority party members are the ones who have their work cut out for them.
Now, all the illegal manipulation going on in the market place has been able to have a free hand because of the gridlock. Basically, the senate refusing to hold hearings has stonewalled many reforms that the house wanted. The house knew they would get nowhere if they passed a bill.
Now consider our Social Security System.
Millions of retired citizens depend upon their Social Security check. The lady who interviewed me asked
“What happen to you in 1974?”
“That was the year of my divorce. How do you know all about that? ” I asked.
She then spun the computer around triumphantly with a big grin. It had all my earnings from day one. She then told me when I would get my first check and the amount.
When I started to think about it, I was amazed how well the government worked. Imagine what would happen if Tuesday’s pay did not come until Friday? Riots? What would happen if the welfare checks came late? I have heard that Walmart is crowded at 12 AM on the first day of each month as millions line up to use their welfare tickets for food.
My point is that these systems work for the everyday folk like us.
So this gridlock has made millionaires and billionaires who have taken advantage of the system. This system which has operated without reform. There were the last money makers from the railroads until the government took over. There were thousands of trusts set up with Boston Banks (When Boston was the financial center) that could only invest in railroad growth stocks. Many of these investors were known as “Robber Barons”.
Wall Street must now reform itself or the Congress will. One of the worst crimes for a broker or brokerage firm or trader to do is called “front running”. That is when they know a large order is coming and they buy or sell ahead of it. That is what High Frequency Trades (HFT’s) do. Except they front run everything for a profit.
This is just one little item that the congress must address in order to satisfy the public demand for better government.
So, come March I expect to see many inquires start in both houses about illegal positions in commodities, as well as reforms in the Dodd Frank Act and Obama care.
It takes a 2/3 vote in the senate to override the President’s veto, so only the most controversial parts will be examined. That way they will be able to attract moderate democrats into the fold.
    The United States, I believe,
is heading for the “middle of the road” politically. In the beginning it will be a rocky road for everyone.
Just remember LBJ hit the social security funds in his guns and butter program, but the paychecks were still coming on time. Time is running out because the checking accounts are becoming empty.

    POOR RICHARDS REPORT
    Chapter 14
A REAL HONEST TO GOODNESS PANIC
It might start at 2:30 in the afternoon EST and just dribble down to about 126 point drop in the S&P 500 Index which will require a 15 minute trading halt. That is when the circuit breakers take over. It is exactly 3:20pm when the market resumes and immediately starts it’s slide. By this time traders are trying to unload their holdings in stocks, and by 3:25PM the market is down over 20% . The market then shuts down for the day. It would be a historic day in finance when the Circuit breakers were finally used.
Market gurus would frantically search for a reason… and then a clerk in a back office would make an unofficial announcement. Their computer had had a double order by mistake and it kick started their computer high frequency trading programs. So the first 126 point drop was computer driven. Then individual and margin orders kicked in other computer driven programs.
This is dangerous. Computer driven programs are taking over the markets instead of individual investors so that the owners can make billions while we quake in our boots.
No one can really tell you when the selling will start or the exact top of the individual markets, but when it starts, the slide will be a doozy, because all the safeguards have been tossed in the recycle bin by our representatives who received payola from delighted lobbyists.
The Dodd–Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act was signed into federal law by President Barack Obama on July 21, 2010 at the Ronald Reagan Building in Washington, DC. Passed as a response to the Great Recession, it brought the most significant changes to financial regulation in the United States. With this reform, the protection of the individual investor was severed for the protection of the “banks”.
The “continuing education courses” that qualified financial analysts must take contain true false questions. When they are answered wrong the test can be retaken immediately. That is proof of how confusing the D-F ACT is. 800 pages long with 3000 pages of footnotes trying the clarified rulings.
This Act should be trashed completely and the reforms that I will express in the next chapter should be implemented post haste.
When the next day dawns we will find out the other markets all over the world have also sold off as everyone wants cash.
In the United States stocks open with the symbol BW –OW. This means bid wanted and offer wanted. Name your price. Finally offerings are made and transactions ensue at various levels depending upon the company and the dividend. A week later most securities are selling around their book value* or less and several hedge fund managers may have died mysteriously. Unemployment rises to the teens and soup lines appear all over town. Police stop arresting because the jails are full and they release most as harmless vagrants. Several companies announce that their debt will be in default due to “market conditions”. Trading hours are shortening to 10am – 3pm for the weekday. Pension plans falter and deflation rears its ugly head. Calmness overcomes most of the country as people line up for credit or are off to sell household items or treasures for food and clothes. We start a barter system as efforts are made to recall our elected officials.
Soon people become more realistic and self-reliant. Neighbors start helping each other and protecting mutual interests. Greed disappears; as a show of wealth brings social disapproval. Armies start marching against each other, but stop because of no pay no food. The planet earth is in chaos.

All the above can happen unless we institute the reforms mentioned.
We must reform the “banks” and the entire industry before it is too late.

  • Strangely, Turkey did not Publicize Correcting Signpost of Armenian Church

Strangely, Turkey did not Publicize Correcting Signpost of Armenian Church

    SASSUN-4

    Harut Sassounian

I just learned that the Turkish government has quietly corrected the signpost near the historic Holy Cross Church (Sourp Khach) on Akhtamar Island in Lake Van, by indicating its “Armenian” origin.

For decades, Turkish authorities systematically concealed the true identity of thousands of Armenian churches and monuments so no one would remember that Armenians lived for thousands of years in lands presently occupied by the Republic of Turkey. By not disclosing the traces of Armenian civilization, Turkish officials calculated that there would be no need to explain the disappearance of Armenians — another manifestation of Turkish denialism.

Back in 2007, the Turkish government held an elaborate opening ceremony after renovating the 10th Century Holy Cross Church. While some Armenians naively participated in this Turkish propaganda exercise, I wrote several critical editorials pointing out that Turkish officials did not permit Armenian church services (except once a year), and refused to allow a cross displayed on its dome. Instead, the Sourp Khach Church was officially designated as a museum and placed under the administration of the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and not under the jurisdiction of the Armenian Patriarchate of Istanbul. Since then, a cross has been placed on the Church dome.

One issue that I failed to mention back in 2007 was the inscription on
the signpost leading to the Church. The original signpost made no
reference to Armenians either in English or in Turkish. Below is the
heading and first words of the previous inscription, written in English:
“Akdamar Island & Monumental Museum. Fee 5 TL [Turkish Liras]. Akdamar
Island and Church. Akdamar Church was built by the monks of architects
Manuel between 915-921 by the order of Vaspurakan King Gagik I….”

Last week, during a chance encounter in a Glendale Armenian bookstore, Senem Cevik, Assistant Professor at Ankara University, showed me two different photos of the Holy Cross Church signpost. The first, taken by her a year ago, showed the foregoing inscription. The second, taken by one of her colleagues last month, displayed the new inscription that refers to the building as an Armenian Church:

“Akhdamar Armenian Church of the Holy Cross. The Church was built by monk/architect Manuel between 915 and 921, by the order of Gagik I, King of Vaspurakan. Built at the form of a four-leaf clover and under the plan of a cruciform, the church was covered by a dome from inside and by a pyramidal cone from outside. The church has two gates, one at the southern and another at the western side. During subsequent periods, the Chapel of Zacharias I, a jamatun and a bell tower were added to the church and the Chapel of Saint Stephanos was built separately. Built in the name of the Holy Cross, the church has been transformed into a monastery in 1131. On the stone reliefs of the façade of the church, religious scenes taken from the Old and New Testament, palace life, hunting scenes as well as human and animal figures are depicted. These depictions are important as they distinguish the church from similar ones. There are various wall paintings representing descriptions taken from the Bible on the inner side of the church’s walls.”

This new inscription clearly designates Holy Cross, both in English and Turkish, as an Armenian Church. However, there is still a problem. While the church’s name is correctly written in English as Akhtamar, in the Turkish language inscription it is referred to by its Turkified name, Akdamar.

I can only speculate as to why the Turkish government did not make a public announcement regarding the revised inscription of the Sourp Khach Church signpost. Here are some possible reasons:

    — Oversight by low-level Turkish officials who did not realize the P.R. value of publicizing the change.
    — Reluctance of high-ranking officials to draw attention to the change, fearing that they would appear ridiculous taking credit for something so obvious that should have been done long time ago.
    — Concerns by Turkish officials that making public the revised text would impress the outside world, while triggering criticism at home for catering to Armenians.
    — Preoccupation of newly-elected Turkish leaders with other urgent matters. They may yet make an announcement at a later date.

It is equally puzzling that no one on the Armenian side, including the Armenian Patriarchate of Istanbul, has made any mention of the revised inscription reflecting the Armenian origin of Holy Cross Church.

One hopes that this single rectification of the Akhtamar Church signpost would be a prelude to similar recognition of Armenian cultural heritage in museums, churches, and monuments all across Turkey, including the City of Ani.
