  • Other Face of Cyprus Problem

    Other Face of Cyprus Problem

The conflict in Cyprus did not begin in mid 1950’s but began with an idea called Enosis, unification of Cyprus with Greece.

This idea was seeded in Cyprus as early as 1879, when the British allowed Greeks to settle on the island in “patriotic communities.” Soon after, Greek patriotism flourished in the island and sneaked into churches and schools. The actual roots of Cyprus problem goes back as far as to late 1800’s but not 1974.

Since early 1900’s, the Greek Cypriots were geared for Enosis and opposed to the coexistence of Turkish Cypriots.

In 1959 the motherlands of both people and Britain provided Cyprus with a constitution that was not only agreed upon by all parties, but also provided for the existence of a Republic, where Turks and Greeks would have equal rights and a say over their own people.

Most people talk about Greek Cypriot sufferings as a result of the coup d’etat that overthrew Makarios and from Turkey’s intervention, but it seems they have no idea about the Turkish Cypriots sufferings.

Their knowledge is in lack of the period prior to the 1974 intervention, where the Greek Cypriots were orchestrating genocidal policies against Turkish Cypriots over a period of eleven years, starting from 1963.

During this notorious period, 103 Turkish Cypriot villages were completely destroyed and hundreds of Turkish Cypriots massacred and buried in mass graves by the Greek Cypriots.

Under the Akritas Plan, which it’s drafting was completed as early as 1961, the Greek Cypriots sought to annihilate the entire Turkish Cypriot population on Cyprus and accordingly attacks to Turkish Cypriots started on December 20, 1963. This atrocious night is known as “Bloody Christmas”, in Turkish Cypriot history and over 600 innocent Turkish Cypriot men, women, and children were ruthlessly slaughtered in one single night .

As a result of such grave human rights abuses, the Turkish Cypriots were forced to withdraw into small enclaves, almost 60,000 Turkish Cypriots left their homes, belongings, memories and sheltered in safe areas to save their lives. In these enclaves their fundamental human rights were severely restricted and they lived out their lives as refugees within their own country. They had no access to most of life’s basic necessities, had no political representation, and were exposed to constant violence and harassment regulated by the Greek Cypriot leadership.

The goal of the Greek Cypriot leadership under Makarios, was to force all Turkish Cypriots off of the island, either by brute force or by implementation of inhuman living conditions.

But the pace of Makarios for ethnic cleansing of Turkish Cypriots was not fast enough for the Junta Generals in Greece and this led to the Greek Cypriot National Guards overthrowing Makarios in a coup d’etat on July 15, 1974, under the command of Greek officers and support of Greek troops from Greece.

From this point onwards, things changed dramatically in the island. Turkey had to intervene to save the lives of Turkish Cypriots, as the speed of the genocide would get accelerated, after the declaration of “Cyprus Hellenic Republic” in July 16, 1974, by the notorious human butcher Nichos Sampson, a right wing Greek operative, installed by the Greek junta as the president to the unilaterally declared new republic.

It is a solid fact that the Turkish Cypriots had been struggling for ages to live in peace in the island but instead, forced by their adver-saries to rely on the armed forces and get cohered to their motherland Turkey.

    It can’t hppn t m.Gss Wht? T WLL! Chptr 20 “A Game Changer”

IT CAN NOT HAPPEN TO ME. GUESS WHAT?  IT WILL!!!

    CHAPTER 20

    GAME CHANGER!

The major media is wring all about QE-3(more later), but the big bugaboo is debt; our debt your debt my debt. The entire world is swimming in debt and everyone is trying to deleverage (reducing debt) and that is deflationary. Deflation is worse than inflation because the economy slows down like a stream freezing over. The public puts off buying unless they really need it, because they know if one waits the price will come down.

In most major elections an unforeseen event happens that changes the entire campaign around.

An example would be the first debate between Kennedy and Nixon. When Richard Nixon heard John Kennedy refuse make-up for the first TV debate he also refused. What Richard Nixon did not realize was that John Kennedy already had a healthy looking tan.

So when the debate started John Kennedy looked healthy and vibrant and Richard Nixon looked pale and haggard.

The Financial Times Wednesday September 12, 2012 USAedition carries the headline: “Moody’s threat to strip US of Top rating.”

There is one school of thought that that no matter what happens, bonds will keep on trading. This is true. The real question is at what price?  Lowering a credit rating is serious business. Moody’s is giving the Congress over a year’s warning. The real implication is we cannot spend more than we make till the crack of doom.

This is a serious battle for the whole world. Moody’s rating agency is considered the leading agency on debt credit while Standard & Poor’s is considered tops in equity issues (common stock).

Money can be made and lost by a single change (Moody’s) in a debt rating.

The US Treasury securities are considered the world’s virginal risk free asset. In international trade funds are settled in US Treasury funds. All bond issues are priced off the similar US Treasury bond. The riskier the credit the higher the rate (interest coupon); thus the higher yield the credit risk!

Another factor investors must realize is that bonds do not act like common stocks. When there are more buyers around than sellers; then demand is in control and stocks should rise.

With bonds it is entirely different. If US Treasuries lose their AAA rating and it is downgraded to AA1; then all trades are halted until the computer programmer can change the rating lower and that drops the price.

Poof goes the magic dragon! This like a lotus or Microsoft’s Excel spread sheets. If you have your bank statement on one and you go back and change one entry by a nickel and then press the send key to whole sheet changes and your current balance changes by that one nickel. A rating change can change the price of a bond by several points. This could mean all assets backed by the US Dollar automatically drop in value all over the world instantly.  Most sovereign debt will be affected also, unless they have a strong balance sheet. Problem is that most countries have some form of socialism which means higher debt. This debt will drop in value which means more monies to pay it back. This means higher taxes. Higher taxes lead to more bureaucracy which leads to a slower economy and a loss of individual freedom to pursue one’s dreams.

FDR’s grand “New Deal” did not work. He had to raise taxes in 1938 and the economy started sliding down the slippery slope of Government spending.

Hindsight can be beautiful and insightful. When the government spends on roads, buildings, someone has to pay for it. Today we call it Quantitative Easing or QE’s. Quantitative Easing does not work. They are buying up bad debt and bailing out poor financial people who made bad decisions in the first place. WE are heading down the same path thatJapantook.

It is the people that make this country grow. Not the politicians inWashingtonD.C.that should create a positive atmosphere. One has to wonder that if all the government bailouts had been returned to the people – where would we be today? The shock treatment would have jolted us back to good health by this time and the world would be better off. This is my personal opinion dear reader.

Joseph Schumpeter was correct in his creative Destruction Theory. It went something like this. When an industry starts to die out, it is replaced by a newer more creative industry. The Horse and Carriage and the buggy whip industry were replaced by the automobile. Where would we be today if the socialist kept supporting the carriage business because of jobs?

So writing about jobs is not the mantra. It is debt. Moody’s has given the US Government until the end of 2013 to put its’ house in order.

They might be too late. The end will come with a BANG!!! That could be when no one will submit $0.00 for a nations sovereign debt. A leading financial publication has already suggested Google is a better alternative to sovereign debt!  They could  have started the process of turning off the spigot that gushes out debt. No more smoking mirrors, we must elect real representatives that are not afraid to lead. WE must not be afraid to work out problems as a group, community. We must work together for the common good. If we fail to act now then the Part One of this book will be forced upon us as effect and cause and not cause an effect.

The first step would be for the Federal Reserve to Raise All Margin rates to 100%

Reinstate to Up Tick Rule for Short Sales.

These two steps would cut out 95% of the abuses going on today.

  • Anti-American Protests Triggered by Bad Movie or Bad Policy?

Anti-American Protests Triggered by Bad Movie or Bad Policy?

    sassounian3

An amateurish US film mocking the Prophet Muhammad and denigrating Islam unleashed massive and violent anti-American protests throughout the world last week.

The angry demonstrations turned deadly when unknown assailants attacked the American Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, killing US Ambassador Chris Stevens and three staff members. Security forces in several countries killed dozens of protesters as they burned American flags and scaled the walls of US Embassies.

Pouring more oil on the fire, initial reports falsely claimed that the movie was produced and financed by Israelis. In fact, it was produced in Southern California by a Christian Egyptian convict whose film was severely denounced by Bishop Serapion of the Coptic Church in Los Angeles.

The real issue, however, goes beyond the vile movie and its reckless producer. The film simply served as a pretext for protesters to express their pent up anti-American anger after decades of flawed and counter-productive US foreign policies — none of which justifies the killing of American diplomats and attacks on US Embassies.

The list of serious missteps by successive US administrations is lengthy enough to fill many volumes. Whether it is called Arab Spring or Winter of Discontent, the down-trodden masses of third world countries have finally erupted in anti-American rage, having long-endured oppressive tyrants backed by Washington. To achieve short-term and shortsighted objectives, American policymakers often damage US interests in the long run.

Another regrettable US mistake is pouring billions of dollars into the pockets of corrupt foreign leaders, to prop up puppet regimes and buy their friendship. Unfortunately, very little of this US largesse has trickled down to the poor and needy. Ultimately, the masses overthrow the autocrats and take their anger on the nearest US target — the American Embassy and the flag which symbolizes to them oppression and misery.

Lengthy congressional hearings are then held in Washington, as legislators wonder why so many foreign leaders have become anti-American and what their corrupt predecessors have done with billions of dollars in US foreign aid? Instead of taking steps to ensure that the assistance provided by the United States reaches the neediest segments of society, Congress often threatens to cut off all aid to teach the new leaders a lesson, thereby antagonizing them even more!

Most problematic is the risky role the United States plays in regional conflicts. Due to misperceived interests, American officials too often throw their weight around, rushing headlong into unnecessary wars or taking one-sided positions, whereas a more balanced approach would be more productive in peacefully mediating these conflicts.

Caution is particularly necessary during an election year, when US presidential candidates make overly partisan statements to pander to the interests of diverse constituencies. A careless remark can have far-reaching consequences, tarnishing America’s image and alienating millions of people around the world.

Most Arabs and Muslims are convinced that America has not been an honest broker in the Arab-Israeli conflict. As a result, they harbor great resentment and deep-seated anger toward the United States. Any provocation, such as burning the Koran or making anti-Muslim movies, triggers a violent reaction. While US laws protect even the vilest forms of speech, people must realize that words have consequences; and just because it is legal to say something, it may not be prudent to do so!

However, in all fairness, not every hostile act in the world should be blamed on US foreign policies. There are extremists in every race, religion, and nation motivated by hostile ideologies with the sole aim of causing indiscriminate destruction. Regrettably, Western governments and societies often mistakenly blame everyone who shares the racial and religious affiliation of few extremists, thereby antagonizing millions of peaceful citizens.

Fortunately, there is no shortage of learned scholars in academia and experts in governmental agencies who can advise and educate US leaders, many lacking basic knowledge of world affairs. A case in point is a conversation Pres. George W. Bush had with three Iraqi-Americans. When the President was informed about the existence of different Islamic sects in Iraq, he reportedly told his guests that he did not know there were Sunnis and Shias in that country. “I thought the Iraqis were Muslims,” he was quoted as saying!

While bad movies can trigger short-term outbreaks of violence, bad foreign policies can cause long-term damage to US national interests.

The saint city Guds (Jerusalem ) stay in the epicenter of conflict between Israel and Palestine. Embassy of the State of Palestine in Azerbaijan Nasser Abdel Kareem commented Palestinian position regarding The Guds and status of city solution in  Israel-Palestine conflict within international law.

-What does Guds mean for Palestinian?

-Jerusalem(Al-Quds), through history has been the hub and the nerve center of the Palestinian religious, cultural, social, economic and political life. The indigenous Palestinian people have been residing in the city since millennia. So as you could imagine, Al-Quds is indispensible for the Palestinians.

-What official status does Ramallah accept for Guds?

    – The Palestinian people by all their persuasions alongside the Palestinian leadership consider East-Jerusalem (Al-Quds) as their rightly eternal Capital, in accordance with international law and UN resolutions.

-Is  factor regarding status of Guds intended in independence issue of Palestine by UN?

    – All UN resolutions regard East-Jerusalem as an occupied Palestinian territory, occupied byIsraelin1967 with the rest of the Palestinian territories (West Bank andGaza). Al-Quds is an integral part ofPalestine’s organic fabric; hence there can be no real independence ofPalestinewithout it, just like you can’t have a functioning body without its head.

-The Guds subject and celebration of the `Quds Day` is used by Islamic countries for politically tool.

    – We welcome any activity that highlights the importance of Al-Quds whether for the 1.5 billion Muslims and the followers of all the monotheistic religions, but above all the challenges the indigenous Palestinian inhabitants of the city have to endure facing the capriciously unlawful measures thrown at them constantly by the Israeli occupation authorities, and to encourage providing support to the Palestinian civil foundations and industry as means of propping the steadfastness of our people in the holy city. As well as underlining the importance of its deliverance from this occupation for peace in our region and world peace.

Do Azerbaijan and Palestine support each-other in their own conflicts?

-PalestineandAzerbaijansupport each other calls for the resolution of their own conflicts by peaceful means through the implementation of the pertinent UN resolutions and international law, and by applying the provisions of these resolutions fairly and transparently, devoid of any prejudice and double standards. The World body has to stop dissecting and reassembling UN resolutions case by case,   there has to be one law and one standard that fit all.

  • French-Armenians Should Welcome Aliyev in Paris as ‘Chief Hatchet Man’

French-Armenians Should Welcome Aliyev in Paris as ‘Chief Hatchet Man’

When Pres. Ilham Aliyev arrives in Paris on September 18, thousands of French-Armenians should greet Azerbaijan’s leader with posters depicting him as ‘Hatchet Man-in-Chief’ — ‘Bash Baltaji’ — holding a bloody axe. Interestingly, in all three languages — Azeri, Hungarian, and Turkish — ‘balta’ means hatchet or axe.

During the protest, French-Armenians should not waste their energies yelling out meaningless slogans, such as ‘Shame on Baku’ or ‘Shame on Hungary.’ Instead, they should deliver the crucial message that Artsakh (Karabagh) be recognized as an independent state, because its Armenian population cannot survive under a despotic regime that glorifies axe-wielding murderers.

Inadvertently, Hungary and Azerbaijan have done a huge favor for Armenians in extraditing and pardoning Lieutenant Ramil Safarov who bludgeoned to death his sleeping Armenian classmate, at a 2004 NATO course in Budapest. Numerous countries and international organizations have condemned Hungary and Azerbaijan for their unsavory actions. Armenians should capitalize on this sordid affair by holding demonstrations in every major city around the world, raising it in every international meeting, and filing lawsuits in European courts against Hungary, Azerbaijan, and NATO. Now that the axe-man’s release has generated worldwide sympathy for Armenians and clear antipathy for Azerbaijanis, Armenia should take advantage of this narrow and fleeting window of opportunity to recognize Artsakh’s independence and urge others to follow suit. A search on google reveals that over one million articles were written on this subject in the last 10 days, the overwhelming majority favoring Armenia and criticizing Azerbaijan.

Armenians should explain to the world the futility of holding peace negotiations with Azeri leaders who treat international agreements as toilet paper! The most recent example is the August 15 letter of Azerbaijan’s Deputy Justice Minister to his Hungarian counterpart, assuring him that Safarov would not be released, if extradited to Baku. Two weeks later, the axe-man was not only freed, but promoted and rewarded by the ‘Chief Baltaji,’ who is taking his cues from Turkish leaders on glorifying criminals and treating protocols as meaningless pieces of paper!

Turkish officials, however, are not too anxious to link their names to the odious behavior of Aliyev Junior. A spokesman for the Turkish Foreign Ministry issued a statement claiming that Turkey had nothing to do with Safarov’s extradition from Hungary, despite the murderer’s expression of gratitude for Turkey’s support, after his arrival in Baku. Independently of its accuracy, the Turkish statement does confirm that Azerbaijan is isolated from the rest of the world and abandoned by the major powers — the United States, Russia and France — all of which have condemned Safarov’s release!

In desperation, Azerbaijan’s intelligence services concocted a fake ASALA (Armenian Secret Army for the Liberation of Armenia) letter that threatens Azeri officials, so that Aliyev can regain the sympathy of world public opinion. The forged letter included statements that no Armenian would make, such as claiming that only 600,000 Armenians were killed during the Genocide, a false figure circulated by denialist Turks and Azeris. No Armenian would ever minimize the enormous death toll from 1.5 million to 600,000! In response to this forgery, ASALA issued a statement rejecting the authenticity of the letter. Such fraudulent Azeri actions give credibility to rumors that Azerbaijan may consider ‘eliminating Safarov,’ its ‘national hero,’ in order to blame Armenians for his murder!

Ironically, Armenia defeated Hungary last Sunday to win the World Chess Championship held in Istanbul. Azerbaijan was in 10th place, while Turkey came in 48th. Armenians should be genuinely proud of this incredible accomplishment (for the third time!), but they should refrain from making disparaging remarks about people in other countries. There are good and bad individuals in every nationality. Rather than harboring ill feelings toward the people of Hungary, Azerbaijan or Turkey, Armenians should confront those who deny the Armenian Genocide, extradite a convicted criminal or glorify an axe-murderer!

Tomris Azeri, President of Azerbaijan Society of America and co-founder of Pax Turcica Institute, suggested in an interview posted on News.az that rather than criticizing Turkey, I should help resolve the Artsakh conflict! Ms. Azeri stated: “I sincerely wish that before authoring another Turcophobic ode, Mr. Harut Sassounian analyzes what can be done to resolve the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict.” My advice to MsSassunian son resim2. Azeri is not to deny past crimes, not to commit new ones — with or without an axe — and then pursue peaceful solutions, rather than whipping up racist anti-Armenian mass hysteria by the ‘Bash Baltaji’ and his cohorts.

  • Cyprus Plans that were Approved by the Greek Cypriots

Cyprus Plans that were Approved by the Greek Cypriots

Actually, it would have been a lot better had the title of this article been “ Which Solution Plan did the Greek Cypriots accept?”

As a matter of fact, so far there has been no plan that has been accepted or approved by the Greek Cypriots that would ultimately lead to a solution regarding the Cyprus issue.

The Greek Cypriots have never had the intentions of saying “yes” to a plan that would give the Turkish Cypriots equal rights and hence a partnership status on the island, and they have never had and never will  have such thoughts crossing their minds.

In 1959, when Makarios was signing the London and Zurich Treaties which in fact had laid the foundations for the 1960 Republic of Cyprus Constitution and  defined the Turkish Cypriots as one of the founders and partners of the new Republic, he had said “Zurich and London Treaties will form the first step toward achieving Enosis.”

What he had actually meant with this statement was, “ I am signing this Treaty involuntarily, and my mission is to achieve Enosis.”  As a matter of fact, he had launched deadly attacks on the Turkish Cypriots three years after signing this Treaty so as to annihilate the Turkish Cypriots on the island of Cyprus.

In 1878 the British leased Cyprus from the Ottoman Empire. Following this, the Greeks and Greeks Cypriots came up with the belief that the British would soon let them have full control over the island because both the British and the Greeks shared the same religion, i.e., Christianity, so they started to press the British to transfer the entire Island to them.

Until 1878, the population ratio between the two communities was mostly 1:1 and at times 1:2, however, from the beginning of the 20th century, the Greek Cypriots brought many Greek immigrants from Anatolia and Greece to the island, and hence they changed the ratio in their favor. First it was 1:3, but later on they managed to make it 1:4. With this steady increase in Greek population on the island, they started working on their Enosis ideals, which meant annexing the island to Greece. They wanted a “Unified Greek State” to rule the island and thus started the Greek atrocıties toward the Turkish Cypriots.

In 1945, when World War Two ended, both the UN and the USA brought it to the attention of the member states that Colonialism should no longer be practiced; that all Colonies should become independent states.  This meant a new period would begin on the Island of Cyprus.

England had already started talking about a bi-communal governing system on the island, and in 1947, introduced a plan for a new state that would consist of two peoples, i.e., the Turkish Cypriots and the Greek Cypriots.

The Greek Cypriots immediately rejected this plan known as the “Lord Winster Plan,” as it recognized the Turkish Cypriot existence.

13 years after rejecting the first “State of Cyprus Plan,” the Greek Cypriots involuntarily accepted the 1960 Republic of Cyprus Constitution based on the assumption that they would achieve Enosis sooner this way. Had they not approved the 1960 Constitution, the island would again have been divided somewhere alongside the Green Line, and would have gotten the immediate approval of the UN.

In order to avoid the legitimate partition of the island and to confiscate the entire territory, the Greeks unwillingly said, “yes” to the 1960 Constitution.  Since then and up until the year 2012, the Greek Cypriots have said “No” to 52 different plans that would have eventually led to a solution of the Cyprus problem.

Greek Cypriots have no substantial plans for a solution other than declaring a Unified Greek Cypriot State, which would give them the right to self-determination, and eventually achieve Enosis.

It is for this reason that the Greek Cypriots have been intentionally trying to make all the negotiations continue open ended and wait till the Turks become weak economically, politically and militarily because under such circumstances, Turkey will not have the power to intervene and send military troops to the Island.

However, as the saying goes, there is always the possibility of losing a diamond while collecting stones.  Losing the whole island is also a probability while trying to get hold of it in its entirety. This is just one of the probabilities of the mathematics based “Game Theory.”
