A LEGENDARY HERO, A FATHER, A LEADER, THE FOUNDER OF THE TURKISH REPUBLIC OF NORTHERN CYPRUS: H.E. RAUF RAIF DENKTAS

It was April 15, 2005 when I had the honor to interview His Excellency Rauf Raif Denktas, a week before the presidential elections in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Here is how our conversation started:
“All I can say is I wish the best of luck to all the candidates and hope the best wins, and whatever the result of the elections naturally, he will be our president and we shall try to help him with our background knowledge if he wants it, we will support him if he is supporting the independence and sovereignty of the Turkish Republic of Cyprus, we will try and prevent mistakes which we regard will destroy our Republic and its independence so I hope that it will be a fair change for the good of the country.. I repeat I shall be available whenever wanted and if they want to share my experiences.
What is my experience during all these years? I was 7 years old when the Greek Cypriots burned the government house for ENOSIS, I was 21 years old after the 2nd World War when Greek Cypriots who had been banished from Cyprus for taking part in that rebellion turned back with higher voices for union with Greece, ENOSIS. Ever since we have been struggling to prevent it in order to prevent domination by Greek Cypriots, and in order to prevent Cyprus becoming a Greek island which will close Turkey to the Mediterranean. If that happens this will be 13th island around the Turkish coast so Turkey has a very important strategic cause in Cyprus; luckily for us because that is why we have been saved by Turkey in 1974. So if anyone thinks Turkey will abandon the Island of Cyprus, and will abandon us, then they are very mistaken. We want a settlement; settlement has not been achieved because the world has settled the Greek Cypriot problem for them by treating them wrongly as the legitimate government of Cyprus.”
I had many talks, conversations, interviews with his Excellency but this was one of the most memorable ones, as for the first time in its history the country was not going to see Denktas as one of the presidential candidates. How humble he was, as always, in his responses.

Born in Pathos o January 27th, 1924, he lived a life fully devoted to the welfare of his country and even in his dying bed yelled out saying to the Greeks, “Don’t you ever dare forget: the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is a sovereign independent state!” and then his soul departed. This was January 13, 2012.

In remembrance of Denktas, the legendary man of the Turkish Cypriot people, the idol, the patriot, the leader, the President, the commander…. Words really do fall short of describing his attributes, yet I will have to just say he was not only our President but he was just like a Fatherly figure to all, especially to me.

Never has there been a day I have not thought about you His Excellency, and to share your success stories, to pass on all I know about you to the people around and especially to those living in AMERICA so far away from the TRNC, is and shall forever be my first and foremost duty.

    TURKISH FORUM’S NEW INITIATIVE: E-JOURNAL

    KAYA

Turkish Forum, ever since its inception in 1993 and in line with its mission and policies, has always been trying to come up with innovative ideas and lead the way to or be the mouthpiece of  the Turkic  peoples all around the world. 2015 marks the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli Victory, the war that was nowhere like any other: “There’s nowhere on the Western Front where there’s a continuous line like this. It’s the best-preserved World War I battlefield anywhere in the world.” Gallipoli marked the emergence of the man who would shape modern Turkey, Colonel Mustafa Kemal who would later take the name Ataturk.

Gallipoli proved to be the Turks’ greatest victory of the war. In London, the campaign’s failure led to the demotion of Winston Churchill and contributed to the collapse of Prime Minister H. H. Asquith’s government. The fighting at Gallipoli proved a galvanizing national experience for the Turks . Hence it carries a lot of significance in Turkish History. To make this historical day and event more memorable, Turkish Forum has launched a new project: the E-Journal. The first issue will be dedicated to the 100th Anniversary of the Gallipoli Victory.

To materialize our project we would like all the writers, researchers, academics to submit articles to be published in the first issue of the e-journal.

Please find the details in the attached announcement.

We look forward to receiving your articles. And please do spread the word around.

    Thank you.

    Respectfully,

    Dr. Kayaalp Buyukataman, President

Turkish Forum and World Turkish Alliance

¨ ATATURK’S ADDRESS TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE (1925. ANKARA)

    ¨Dearest Americans,

I would like to mention a few words about the natural origin of the undeniable sincere relationship between the people of Turkey and those of the United States of America.

The Turks are already a Democratic Nation . If this true fact has not been understood by today’s civilized world I must direct attention to the remarkable comments made by our ambassador regarding the last days of the Ottoman empire. On the other hand the American people have always relied and depended on democracy to identify them as a nation since their inception . It has been through this blessing that they have been placed amongst today’s civilized world as a new nation (country).
    ¨

¨This has given them acceptance as a new nation . Thus the Turkish people feel a strong sentiment of love and understanding towards the American people . I do hope that the observation of this fact will encourage further dialog and warm relations between the two nations; but this will not be all!

I am sure that this will also allow the rest of the civilized world to have more good will towards one another and ERASE all past negative FABLES and experiences; thus leading the world towards a more peaceful and lawful existence.

    Dear Americans,
As a proud representative of the Turkish nation I give you this as a goal and sole purpose of the new Turkish people. I have no doubt that the American nation who has already reached this ultimate goal shall understand and join the new Turkish nation.

  • Ankara’s ISIS Conundrum

    Ankara’s ISIS Conundrum

    Ankara’s ISIS Conundrum

    Mustafa Gurbuz | September 2014

“Mr. Barzani has not had a conversation with me about Kurdish independence. We are against the division of Iraq,” said Erdogan in his first visit to United States as Turkey’s President. What Erdogan did not mention, however, was that the Turkish government had quietly pledged to defend the Kurdistan Region’s Peshmerga if they were attacked but “broke its promise” after the Islamic State (IS) advanced on Iraqi Kurdistan, President Massoud Barzani’s Chief of Staff Fuad Hussein said during a talk at the United States Institute of Peace in Washington.

The Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) frustration with Ankara comes as the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) emerges as an ally in the war on IS. Ankara and Erbil’s strategic agreement emerged from the Syrian crisis and was expected to be further strengthened given the turmoil in Iraq. Declining bilateral trust, however, raises serious questions about the future of Erbil-Ankara relations. Despite the fact that both deeply value their economic partnership, Turkey’s peace negotiations with the PKK is a critical dynamic that will influence Ankara’s long-term security strategy.

Turkey now finds itself at a crossroads. In Washington, Ankara’s (un)willingness to cooperate against IS is facing heavy scrutiny, particularly after IS released Turkish hostages who were held in Mosul for months. Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu has promised to join US efforts to cut the extremists’ revenue sources, especially oil smuggling via the Turkish border.

At the United Nations in New York, Erdogan recently indicated that Turkey is open to boosting military cooperation by making a strong statement: “We will continue to work against Al-Qaeda in the region and ISIS is an outgrowth of Al-Qaeda…We’re not weak. We’ve fought terrorists.”

Yet, Ankara faces an unprecedented challenge as its two designated enemies, PKK and IS, recruits sympathizers from Turkey to fight in Syria. The PKK’s call for action against IS not only boosts its organizational base but also its global legitimacy. Some western officials believe that it is only a matter of time before their governments, which label the PKK a terrorist organization, drop the designation and create formal ties with the PKK despite Turkey’s objections. Turkey’s Justice and Development Party (AKP) government recommitted to peace negotiations with the PKK after Erdogan’s electoral victory; however, recent developments signal a bumpy road ahead.

Two elements appear critical to solving Turkey’s conundrum: creating a buffer zone in northern Syria and the use of Turkey’s Incirlik air base in military operations against IS. A buffer zone could provide relief for Turkey, which hosts more than 1.3 million Syrian refugees, a number that is rapidly climbing and creating tension in border cities. While Erdogan pushes for this so-called “safe zone,” the United States is trying to find ways to convince Turkey to allow the US military to use Incirlik.

Given that it has underground cells in Istanbul and few other Turkish cities, IS remains a formidable domestic threat to the country. The creation of a safe zone in Syria might prompt the Turkish government to allow the US or other forces to use its Incirlik base. A stronger Turkish presence in the Syria war could also help stabilize Syria’s Kurdish region, a key factor in the long-term fight against IS.

American officials, however, are concerned about Erdogan’s overall vision for the region. Beyond the IS crisis and offering humanitarian protection, a buffer zone could be used as a training ground for anti-Assad forces. The US and Turkey have long been divergent about the future of Syria, particularly over how to arm opposition groups and carry out diplomatic strategies. The buffer zone is likely to be rejected by Iran, Russia and China, and will not be easy for the US to implement unilaterally.

The release of Turkish hostages provided an ample opportunity for the US and its allies to get Turkey on board against IS. Erdogan’s goal, to keep the AKP government strong before the 2015 national elections, is a significant factor in his willingness to cooperate. How to navigate under these complex circumstances, however, is really up to his vision of the Middle East. Unless he convinces US diplomats that he is not obsessed with removing the Assad regime, the region will remain hot. As Kerry bluntly stated, “The proof will be in the pudding.”

LATIF AKCA: THE WORLD IS STILL DENYING THE TURKISH CYPRIOTS THEIR FUNDAMENTAL HUMAN RIGHTS

To participate in international sports events, Turkish Cypriots are forced to ignore their identity and depending on situation they are forced to get the consent of an administration, which is not chosen by their own political will, and to compete under the name and the control of this administration. This confronts individuals with the situation of denying their identities and additionally it is a bad and humiliating treatment. Whereas, these rights, guaranteed by both constitution and international pacts during the times of previous partnership in 1960s, invest Turkish Cypriots with the power to regulate some domains, which are outside the realm of the central government’s authority, but under their own autonomy via community assembly; and at the top of these domains, there were some subjects such as education, religion, sports and culture. For these issues each community’s Community Assembly was doing legislative process. Aftermath of association’s collapse, in all the solutions, which proposed by the UN, these powers were still left to the both communities. Namely, the issue of sports, as an established implementation, the Turkish Cypriots can make organization on their own, without the consent of the Greek Cypriots. Therefore, in such activities Turkish Cypriots should be able to participate without the consent or control or the license of the Greek Cypriot administration. Besides the on-going situation today is contrary to the “Republic of Cyprus” constitution which is the international community has accepted. It is not possible that one of the societies has a say in other society’s area like sports. Turkish Cypriots should not need TRNC to be recognized in order to attend to international sport events without permission from Greek Cypriot administration. TRNC’s regulation specially regarding sports must be taken into consideration whether TRNC is recognized or not. Otherwise, an administration that does not represent Turkish Cypriots will continue to rule based on non-democratic principles and steal the future of Turkish Cypriots’ young generation. Putting this generation in a situation where they need to deal with being isolated from the world and require Greek Cypriot administration’s permission to participate in any international event deteriorates Turkish Cypriots’ identity and it is not acceptable. The most recent two examples are the cooperation of KOP-KTFF and the requirement of obtaining license from the Greek Cypriot administration for the most recent rally event

Kemal, The Key to India and Egypt, Robert Dunn

Robert Dunn, an ex-lieutenant US Navy was an Aids for Intelligence to the US Commission in Turkey in 1919-1921.

In this article he explains the help extended by the British to the Greeks against Turkey.

Dunn shows Mustafa Kemal as a highly determined Turkish Officer not to accept the situation set by the Treaty of Sevres. With the National Struggle Movement, Turkey had already gained some of their points notably the return of Istanbul and Thrace to Turkish rule.
