According to Jerusalem Post a post published in the IDF official twitter page reported a “Possible nuclear leak in the region after 2 rockets hit Dimona nuclear facility”. The tweet was removed after a few minutes and instead said “long live Palestine”. IDF said the incident is investigated.
Who hacked IDF’s twitter account? A post published tonight (Thursday) could have caused a major scare.
Shortly after the post it was removed and a new tweet said #Longlive Palestine. IDF spokesperson said the matter is “under investigation” and minutes later another tweet was published: “we apologize for the false tweet on our hacked twitter account. We will combat terror on all front, including the cyber one.”
This is not the first time an embarrassment is caused to IDF following a tweet. About a month ago it said on IDF’s twitter page that “Israeli soldiers left Lebanon over 14 years ago. In the meantime, Hezbollah terrorists have remained with over 100,000 missiles aimed at Israel.” the picture featured in the tweet displayed North Korean missiles.
The missiles are SCUD B and C and are displayed in a military memorial in commemoration of the Korean War.
The internet blog criticized the IDF for operating indiscriminately in its recent budget crisis. “The IDF’s franchise is fighting over its clients budget, and they are using every weapon in their arsenal” they wrote, tongue in cheek, “and if they don’t succeed in frightening us by threatening to cancel all military exercises, brining the IDF preparedness to subpar levels seen before the Second Lebanon War, then perhaps they will succeed in scaring us with North Korean missiles.”
The IDF’s spokespersons’ unit replied that “the photograph was meant as an illustration that does not take away from the real threat of recent Hezbollah’s armament. The point of the tweet is to highlight to the world, the threat that Israel faces.”
