Atmosphere of Genocide denial has been formed in Turkey and changes in the situation will require long period of time, Turkish journalist said at a conference in Yerevan.
Cingiz Aktar, one of initiators of “Forgive Us, Armenians” campaign, said the Turkish society underwent positive changes which suggests the situation may change. “Turkey ‘opened’ Armenia for itself only in 1991 when the country became independent. However, the Turkish society has changed, while situation and attitude towards Armenians began to change gradually,” he said.
Many Armenians converted to Islam, began to speak with pride about their Armenian roots. Books about the events of 1915 and Armenian cultural figures are published in Turkish. Press reports contain information about Armenia and Armenians. It is allowed to hold public actions as well, he noted.
“Last year on April 24 we held the first open rally in Istanbul. This year rallies will be held in six cities of Turkey, including Istanbul and Antalya,” Aktar added.
