Turkish Radio-Television Corporation (TRT), a member of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), has become a shareholder in European news channel Euronews, with a stake of 15.7%.

The agreement came into effect in August, following a previous partnership deal signed in February, for the launch of a Turkish-language version of Euronews in January 2010. This feed will be broadcast on Euronews’ satellite network via 34 satellites covering the entire world. It will be available on all digital networks carrying the channel (cable, ADSL, satellite and terrestrial), and reaching more than 293 million households in 150 countries.

The Turkish-language version will also be broadcast to more than 17 million households in Turkey and Turkish-speaking neighbouring countries via various distribution networks.

Broadcast 24-hours a day, Turkish is the ninth language of Euronews, alongside Arabic, English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish.

TRT is Euronews’ fourth main shareholder after France Télévisions (25.37%), RAI (22.84%), and RTR (16.94%). The broadcaster will join the Supervisory Board of Euronews, presided over by Pier Luigi Malesani.
